East of Eden was on TCM this morning and I suddenly realized that goddamn Lois Smith is in it!! How did I never know this. So young and gorgeous with huge beautiful eyes. I always loved Lois since discovering Five Easy Pieces in the late 1990s, which is one of my favourite films. Most recently I saw her in Grace and Frankie playing Martin Sheen's miserable mother. IMHO Lois Smith is an underrated character actress. Her career spans 7 decades!!
She was great. Got to see her in Buried Child on Broadway. Amazing performance.

She was on Frasier.

I have to make a point of seeing more of her work. Honestly had no idea she started back in the 1950s. She must have been from the Method school with Dean and Brando and Woodward, etc.

Lois stole scenes like a thief.

Who knows? Rent, exposure? Plenty of people did soaps.

She is quite the versatile character actor. She was on "The Doctors" soap opera in the 1970s, and she played a very small role (perhaps less than a week) on "The Edge of Night" in the early 1980s.

R2, she was so great in her scenes with Roz. My husband likes to quote her line: "I hacked into the mainframe, and now I get all of my spongebaths from Eduardo".

[quote] Plenty of people did soaps.
If you are a film actress, you DO NOT do soaps - PERIOD

I am impressed that she is a working actress and open to go where the work is, whether it is film, TV, soaps, or stage. That's what a working actor does--go where the work is.

She was heartbreaking in an episode of “Law & Order: SVU” as the mother of a mentally retarded girl who becomes pregnant after (I think) being raped by a hospital orderly. Very good actress.

According to an interview with Eileen Fulton, Smith was the first choice to play Lisa on “As the World Turns”. They shared an agent, when producers called, looking to audition Smith for the role, she wasn’t available, and he suggested sending another of his clients (Fulton) for them to audition.

She got a lot more film work after Five Easy Pieces (1970) I remember her from Foxes (1980), Four Friends (1981), Black Widow (1987) Falling Down (1993) Dead Man Walking (1995) and Hollywoodland (2006). She was also in Twister, Fried Green Tomatoes, Up the Sandbox, Next Stop, Greenwich Village, Minority Report and Lady! Bird. Quite a career!

To see some fantastic late career acting by Lois Smith, watch the Season 3 episode of THE AMERICANS “Do Mail Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?” and the 2017 film MARJORIE PRIME.

She is a brilliant actress and I'm so glad that she's finally getting more recognition. I've actually worked with her a couple of times, once in a production of THE CHERRY ORCHARD at a regional theater about 30 years ago. She's a lovely person, just a little dotty, but very sweet and generous.
But I was always a little puzzled why she didn't have a bigger career on Broadway as a young leading lady earlier in her career when she was living and working mostly in NY in the 1950s and 60s, kind of like the career that Julie Harris (also in EAST OF EDEN) had.
Perhaps there were life decisions that kept her from working more or just some bad luck. She's always worked and made a living at what she loves and that's what's important.

I wish she had played Abra in "East of Eden" instead of Julie Harris. Hollywood never gave her a chance in main roles, but she got some good ones in the theater.

Watching this screen test is kind of crazy to watch when you realize ames Dean has been dead for 66 years and Lois Smith is still alive at 91 and just won her first Tony.
