Carol and her husband wanted two kids. She got pregnant the first time, both times, so did not need to do it all again.

Some people, often gay people, got married back in the day, as it was pretty much compulsory to engage with society as an adult, but did not engage in sex, other than for procreation.

Ok, she only had one kid. Maybe he was really bad in bed.

Some people just suck in bed and it's better to avoid it altogether than waste your time with a bad lay.
