Gap Playlists Blog being Decimated
Someone is making false copyright claims on my Gap In-Store Playlists blog, so Blogger is deleting it post by post tonight. I'm sure everything will be gone by morning.
Haters: celebrate. You destroyed me. You got what you wanted.
Thank you to those who were kind to me and shared the playlists that they saved from when they worked at Gap.
I will just be at Instagram from now on.
If you worked at Gap and saved the paper playlists that came with each month's CD/tape, please share them with me.
Contact me on Instagram.

I have all of the playlists saved, of course. And all of the marketing photos, like this 1993 ad featuring Debbie Harry.
But all of my work since 2015 is GONE.
All of the links on the Internet will be worthless by morning.
Thanks, DL freaks, who decided to have fun and destroy my blog.

I have all of the content. It's the links, like shared by THE NEW YORKER, that will be worthless now.
Anyone who reads the article now (which STILL generates thousands of hits to the blog each month) will find dead links.
I have not lost content. I'm losing the links which generate visibility to my quest to find more Gap In-Store Playlists.

I would also share with them the New Yorker article in which you were cited.

R13 if the copyright claims are false, you should be able to resolve this. Just take a deep breath and remain diligent. Your pages are not completely deleted; I am sure Blogger can retrieve them.

A friend of mine was some kind of store manager at the Gap throughout the 90s and obsessively took and saved all the cassettes and cds the store would play, etc. Boxes upon boxes. He finally decided to try to sell them at a Garage sale and no one would take them.
I'm convincing him to just toss them out.

R16 Why not have him give them to op?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 15, 2021 12:36 AM

What exactly is the copyright claim?
Those playlists, by themselves, are not copyrighted.
And even if they were, you have a fair use argument—publishing them falls under "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research."
Were you charging people to view the site? No, right?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 15, 2021 12:36 AM
|
R15, GAP is totally supportive, AND I have BIG news to hopefully announce soon. Soon!
Blogger deletes immediately. Even if the copyright claims are false, they don't reinstate the old links. You have to make new ones. And that means the old links are still dead, like from THE NEW YORKER.

Rebuild the site on Squarespace.
The free blog hosting sites just delete everything that's disputed, regardless of whether a claim is valid or not.
But you should publish under an LLC, so if someone decides to sue you (God knows why), they can't personally bankrupt you.

R16 is just trying to upset me.
R19, it's the marketing images. GAP loses the rights after one year of usage. The photographers and directors retain ownership.
All someone has to do is claim ownership of the photos, and Blogger deletes everything immediately, without a "trial."
It's GONE.

The BIG NEWS is really BIG. But I have to wait to see if it pans out.
There have been several posters like R16 over the last 6 years who have tried to bait me and upset me.

[quote]It's the marketing images. GAP loses the rights after one year of usage. The photographers and directors retain ownership.
OK, this is actually a valid issue.
You need to take those images down, or write the photographers individually to get permission to use them.
There are lawyers — known as "copyright trolls" — who represent photographers and are suing independent bloggers, even Instagrammers, for posting their clients' images online. They sue you for $50,000 or $100,000 to extort you to settle for $5,000, since that's what it'll cost to hire a lawyer to defend yourself in court.
I know, because that is exactly what happened to me. I posted something on my personal blog, which was totally fair use, but this copyright troll lawyer sued me, even though I took the image down immediately. It cost me $6k to hire a lawyer to deal with the court mishegas and pay off the photographer, which has destroyed me financially.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 15, 2021 12:51 AM

R31, I understand that, and I have permission from most of the photographers.
But once Blogger deletes the posts, THEY ARE GONE.
I should never have used Blogger, but it was easy.

However, so have THOUSANDS OF OTHERS these last 6 years. Others LOVE finding their old song friends that they loved from when they worked at GAP.

Easy solutions:
Once you have a new site, you can redirect the old links.
Or you can ask the New Yorker writer to update them in the article.

Your best bet is to redirect the old links cited in the New Yorker article to your new site, once you have it.
You still have the Blogspot login and can get into that account — yes? — so it should be easy. Do a 301 permanent redirect.
But for a project like this, which means so much to you, you really should buy a URL of your own so you're not beholden to hosting companies like Blogspot.
So if you buy, say, myplaylistsite.com, your URL myplaylistsite.com/march2005 can remain a permanent link in your control, even if you move hosting companies. (You may, however, have to rebuild your page content, but we all do periodically.)
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 15, 2021 1:25 AM
|
I have not lost anything except for the LINKS that have been on the Internet for the last six years.
But I still need several more playlists, so that's why I am devastated at this attack on my blog.
Thanks for the suggestions, R50~!~!!!!!
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 51 | May 15, 2021 1:26 AM
|
If you do a 301 redirect for each link, it's a permanent redirect that is recognized by search engines, so you will not lose the SEO juice you've accumulated over these years.
You can relax – it will take some work, but everything you've built won't be lost.

R46 Be sure to make your email concise and professional. Lead with the fact that your website was cited in one of their articles. I wouldn’t go into Blogger deleting your posts or any of the claims lobbied against you. Just say you decided to move your site - you may want to share with them that GAP is supportive of your efforts and that there may be a collaborative project down the pipeline - and ask if they would be willing to update the digital article with a link to your new site. Of course, you should work on creating the new site [italic]before[/italic] requesting this of them.
Keep us up to date.
