Most capable people to be denied the US Presidency?

I was reading about some of the candidates (who either lost in the primary or the actual election) and got thinking, who would have been a huge asset to the country had they been elected?

There are some remarkable people vying for the for the top job.

I'm thinking about people with great intellect, people skills or was ahead of their time in political vision?

What says the DL?

by Anonymousreply 81May 20, 2021 3:27 PM

Bob Dole comes to mind.

by Anonymousreply 1May 13, 2021 7:15 PM

Pee-wee Herman

by Anonymousreply 2May 13, 2021 7:19 PM

Al Gore in 2000.

by Anonymousreply 4May 13, 2021 7:20 PM

John Kerry 2004

by Anonymousreply 5May 13, 2021 7:30 PM

Mitt Romney

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2021 7:32 PM

Obviously Hilary was qualified and had she been president the US would have been a leader in containing the pandemic...I blame the Bernie Bros for 2020.

by Anonymousreply 7May 13, 2021 7:39 PM

I'm thinking more outside the last 30 years

by Anonymousreply 8May 13, 2021 7:40 PM

Al Gore. The media attacked him like a bunch of vicious hyenas. And I'm talking about the mainstream media, not just fox. If it weren't for the hateful, snide and dishonest trash of the DC media, history might have been very different. Evgenia Peretz wrote an excellent article for vf about the anti Gore bias among the press.

They behaved very similarly towards Howard Dean several years later.

by Anonymousreply 9May 13, 2021 7:47 PM

What do you think Hillary would have done during the pandemic that Trump didn't? (not politicizing masks, what else?)

by Anonymousreply 10May 13, 2021 7:55 PM

No one is denied the presidency. No one is entitled to office. For better or not those who hold office needs to be able to appeal to the average voter in each state. Perhaps it's this attitude that certain people deserve to be president that rubs people the wrong way? Biden should have been the candidate in 2016. Hillary should have realized that she was never going to happen in 2008.

by Anonymousreply 11May 13, 2021 7:55 PM
Hilary was qualified

What exactly where Hillary's qualifications, besides sleeping with Bill once?

by Anonymousreply 12May 13, 2021 7:59 PM

I didn't realise what an intellect Richard Nixon was. Graduated Summa Cum Laude.

by Anonymousreply 13May 13, 2021 8:01 PM

Ooh, ooh, I know the answer to that, r12!

She was smart, rational, grounded, effective and experienced in national politics. She had no sexual scandals in her past, no blackmailable peccadilloes, and she had actual, well-thought-out policies in place for when/if she took office.

Oh yeah, and she wasn't a traitorous, lazy, racist orange buffoon with a pee fetish and an advanced case of toxic NPD.

by Anonymousreply 14May 13, 2021 8:05 PM

Howard Dean. The real grassroots political movement that Obama built his AstroTurf campaign on. Next talent up: Pete.

by Anonymousreply 15May 13, 2021 8:08 PM

R14 Hillary was so unlikeable that Trump beat her. Literally any of the other democratic nominees would have beat Trump by a landslide.

by Anonymousreply 16May 13, 2021 8:10 PM

that was part of the problem r16. There were no other dem nominees practically. The DNC stacked the deck so far in her favor that nobody except Bernie and one other guy even ran.

by Anonymousreply 17May 13, 2021 8:18 PM

R17 Biden, you know, the obvious choice. The incumbent vice president usually gets the nod, but Hillary emotionally blackmailed the dem establishment to ensure she was the obvious candidate.

by Anonymousreply 18May 13, 2021 8:23 PM

R14 what about all those people that she murdered?

by Anonymousreply 19May 13, 2021 8:26 PM

R14, you are describing literally millions of women in America. What exactly were Hillary's accomplishments that did not rely on her being Bill Clinton's wife?

Don't say senator, because she never would have gotten that if she hadn't been first lady. Don't say Secretary of State, because she never would have gotten that just from being a one-term senator. Please name some of her actual skills and accomplishments that might make one think should would be a capable president.

by Anonymousreply 20May 13, 2021 8:31 PM

didn't obama and bill say that HILLARY was far more qualified and smarter than both of them to be president?

by Anonymousreply 21May 13, 2021 8:33 PM

George McGovern

by Anonymousreply 22May 13, 2021 8:35 PM

Except r15 if you take a look at Howard Dean these days he is anything but grassroots. So was he pretending back then?

by Anonymousreply 23May 13, 2021 8:36 PM

Hillary Clinton

Al Gore

John Kerry
Literally any of the other democratic nominees would have beat Trump by a landslide.

[bold]2016 was a stolen election[/bold].

by Anonymousreply 24May 13, 2021 8:36 PM

r20, "literally millions of women in America" (or millions of people in America, for that matter) have experience in national politics and actual, well-thought-out policies in place for when/if they take office?

Color me surprised; where have all these people been in the past eight presidential elections?

by Anonymousreply 25May 13, 2021 8:40 PM

The media would have been relentless going after Hillary during covid. It wouldn't have mattered much that she would have told everybody to wear masks and social distance because the deplorables wouldn't have done it. Yes the numbers would have been lower but it still would have been a massive outbreak. Look at European countries, most have reasonable leaders and people are less crazy, but they had and still have a huge infection rate. If you have a couple of thousand people who act recklessly, the virus will spread. Hillary wouldn't have implemented harsh measures like we did here in Australia and completely shutting ourselves off for months.

by Anonymousreply 26May 13, 2021 8:53 PM

History will show that Hillary was the rightful winner of the 2016 election.

by Anonymousreply 27May 13, 2021 9:03 PM
So was he pretending back then?

R23 grassroots means just that. Dean had nothing to do with setting it up. He was a politico, the governor of Vermont. But his candidacy caught fire at the, you guessed it, grassroots level. He was as surprised as we all were.

by Anonymousreply 28May 13, 2021 9:09 PM

R21 because he had a metaphorical gun to his head. You really think Obama actually wanted Hillary in his cabinet? You have pollyanna views of American politics.

by Anonymousreply 29May 13, 2021 9:17 PM

Most definitely John Kerry.

by Anonymousreply 30May 13, 2021 9:17 PM

Lyndon LaRouche. The last time he ran was 2004 I think. Some of his people were shoving literature in peoples faces outside as post office. A fairly good looking college age guy approached me. He smelled serious cookies. I asked him about his candidates views on gay rights. Hilarity ensured. I told him I wished he could have my babies.

by Anonymousreply 31May 13, 2021 10:25 PM

I'm not convinced about Howard Dean, but I don't think he got a fair shot in the primaries, being booted out by the mass media because of his exuberance at that one rally.

Al Gore doesn't connect well with people and just like Kerry he maintains a lifestyle fully at odds with how he preaches the little people should live. Hypocrite.

by Anonymousreply 32May 13, 2021 10:39 PM

John Kerry

by Anonymousreply 33May 13, 2021 10:53 PM
being booted out by the mass media because of his exuberance at that one rally...

It was his own DNC that shot Dean down.

by Anonymousreply 34May 13, 2021 11:52 PM
2016 was a stolen election.

Two billion dollars, literally, was spent trying to prove this. Mueller found nothing.

Meanwhile, if one even suggests that there were electoral problems in 2020, one is banned by the leftist controlled major media outlets. The difference in the information gatekeepers' reactions to these two events is suggestive of something, for those paying attention.

Isn't there a challenge or audit of 2020 going on right now in Arizona?

by Anonymousreply 36May 14, 2021 12:24 AM

R32: Oh shut up with the lifestyle crap.

Jerry Brown

Adlai Stevenson

Henry Wallace would have been a trip

by Anonymousreply 37May 14, 2021 12:28 AM

R34 The DNC did not want Dean from the start. But it was the media that jumped on the rally and kept playing that tape over and again to deliver the coup de grâce.

by Anonymousreply 38May 14, 2021 12:30 AM

R38 recollections may vary.

by Anonymousreply 39May 14, 2021 12:38 AM
Isn't there a challenge or audit of 2020 going on right now in Arizona?

Yes. The state senate (controlled by Republicans) has asked the state auditors office to publically recount all the ballots cast in the state. They have counted most counties. However, the majority of ballots in AZ were cast in a single county, Maricopa.

For some reason, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors (controlled by the Democrats) is refusing to hand over vote tallies, ballots, and electronic voting records to the state's auditors. They are under court order to do so, but are so far refusing.

The latest is that some electronic voting records from the county appear to have been erased just within the past week.

Alf Landon would have ended the Great Depression.

by Anonymousreply 41May 14, 2021 1:14 AM

As president, Henry Clay might have established his American System and become the FDR of the 19th century, but he lost the election 4 times.

by Anonymousreply 42May 14, 2021 1:32 AM

Think about the election of 1800 - America had just 5,000,000 people, and the parties ran two intellectual giants: Jefferson and Adams. Now we are almost 70 times as large and look who is chosen to run.

Something is wrong with our political system.

by Anonymousreply 46May 14, 2021 2:52 AM

r21 they said it but I don't think it was true at least in Bill's case.

I met a woman who worked in the White House drawing up documents for years.

She said of all the presidents she worked under Clinton was unique.

She drew up highly technical legal zoning law documents and was amazed that Clinton could be given a document at five in the evening and and know the whole thing and ask questions about it the next day. She said none of the other presidents did that and passed it on to staff.

She said she liked Hillary but that she didn't think she or many people on earth had Clinton's focus. He was almost like a political savant she said.

by Anonymousreply 47May 14, 2021 3:38 AM

The United States is socially and politically disintegrating. No one wants the job of administering that which can no longer be rescued.

by Anonymousreply 48May 14, 2021 3:50 AM

Adlai Stevenson would have been an interesting President, a continuation of New Deal policies, but.too aristocratic and sophisticated for the times. His concession speech in 1952:
Someone asked me...how I felt, and I was reminded of a story that a fellow townsman of ours used to tell – Abraham Lincoln. He said he felt like the little boy who had stubbed his toe in the dark. He said that he was too old to cry, but it hurt too much to laugh."

by Anonymousreply 49May 14, 2021 3:58 AM

It feels like television; promising newcomers burn out right as they’re about to accomplish something while so many stay well past cancellation.

I do believe the most fuckable was/is Howard Dean. He still offers awesome commentary on political fuckups via twitter. He still pushes universal healthcare and publicly funded campaigns. Plus, he looks to have a body that power fucks 20 minutes straight.

by Anonymousreply 50May 14, 2021 4:17 AM

I'm not sure I consider that a valid criterion when choosing a leader for my country.

Agree R32.

No matter what R37 says, believe John Kerry to be ill suited for any political position.

Flying on his souped-up Private Jet while preaching to the masses about climate change?

I think not.

by Anonymousreply 54May 19, 2021 10:38 PM

Adlai and Howard Dean, definitely.

Edward Muskie, maybe.

by Anonymousreply 55May 19, 2021 10:39 PM

Hillary lost because she had too much baggage and her behavior is aspergersish/robotic. Look at the Fox News slander of Biden/Kalama, none of it sticks. Even when they tried to bash Biden for Hunter's loutish behavior, he came off better looking for standing with his son. It was relatable and humanized him to the public. That is what makes him a capable politician, not how many degrees he has or how many years he's been in public office. The problem with Hillary was that there was a kernel of truth to the slander.

by Anonymousreply 56May 19, 2021 10:41 PM

John Kerry is saiid to be, by people who know him, a pretentious narcissistic hypocrite.

by Anonymousreply 57May 19, 2021 10:43 PM

WHAT R7 SAID !!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 58May 19, 2021 10:44 PM

I agree Kerry wasn't meant for the presidency. Even if he does have a giant penis.

by Anonymousreply 59May 19, 2021 10:44 PM
Al Gore doesn't connect well with people

Totally missing the point of the question.

Not about the most electable but the most capable.

by Anonymousreply 60May 19, 2021 10:47 PM

R60 Down-and-dirty politics is all about being able to connect with people! It's a politician's essential skill. Both collectively with voters and one-on-one with other politicians.

Look at Obama, who connected well with voters but wasn't willing to put much effort into connecting with Congress, so he didn't accomplish much.

by Anonymousreply 61May 20, 2021 12:15 AM

Winfield Scott Hancock would have served this country well if he had been elected in 1880.

Bobby Kennedy.

by Anonymousreply 63May 20, 2021 12:58 AM

Wendell Willkie.

by Anonymousreply 64May 20, 2021 12:59 AM

Hillary and Gore own this thread. I can't decide who between the two was more capable, but if I had to pick one I'd go with Hillary b/c she ad an evil side that was necessary to be president.

by Anonymousreply 65May 20, 2021 12:59 AM

Both Hillary and Gore would have won if they listened to Bill.

Must be quite annoying to have to live with that.

by Anonymousreply 66May 20, 2021 1:01 AM

I'm very happy with the president we currently have.

by Anonymousreply 67May 20, 2021 1:10 AM

Jimmy Carter

by Anonymousreply 68May 20, 2021 1:10 AM

Good answer R64.

by Anonymousreply 69May 20, 2021 1:16 AM

R68 The guy who was dumb enough to listen to Kissinger and Rockefeller and let the Shah in, a mistake that reverberates to this day.

If you're President, you don't get one free shot you can miss without penalty.

Nice guy with his heart in the right place, but not capable when it came to serving as President.

by Anonymousreply 70May 20, 2021 1:18 AM

R70 I love Carter but he was the wrong person for that time. He really needed to be a Senator or similar before becoming President.

He was selected because he was a good, moral person, and the nation wanted that after the stink of Nixon. Back when we used to care.
John Kerry is saiid to be, by people who know him, a pretentious narcissistic hypocrite.

Know people who worked for him.

He is reportedly one of the most cruel, vindictive people in politics that my relative ever “served”.

I find it astonishing that Biden has placed him in the Climate Czar post. HUGE fail.

Oh, and apparently (akin to Elon Musk), Kerry’s ego is so huge that he makes foolish mistakes as he does not recognize his own limitations.

Apparently he’s a reckless, blundering fool.
