She stars in a new Netflix comedy series called The Upshaws, a Blackish knockoff also starring Wanda Sikes.
Kim Fields is back on TV!

Love Kim. Painful watching her slumming on Real Housewives of Atlanta. Glad she’s back in a series.

Wanda who?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 13, 2021 2:51 AM |
Did anyone watch this? The acting was kind of clunky in places, but overall a pretty fun show. There is also a gay storyline.

Halston, then this.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 15, 2021 3:37 PM |
I will check it out for Wanda
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 15, 2021 3:37 PM |
What Rescue Chick said. I'll watch anything with Wanda in it. Aren't we due for another stand up special from her?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 15, 2021 3:44 PM |
Wanda and the actress who plays Tasha are the best things about this. The Tasha actress is a great scene stealer. Wanda's character, Lucretia, and Mike Epps character, Bennie have a Fred Sanford/Aunt Esther vibe. It's great, if you're old enough to remember Fred Sanford and Aunt Esther. Kim Fields is good in this is well.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 15, 2021 3:55 PM |
Wanda is hilarious and Kim seems like a real sweetheart. I will have to check this out.

I'm loving the new show! Kim Fields, Wanda Sykes and Michael Epps are hilarious. I don't watch the Housewives garbage. Welcome back Kim, we missed you!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 15, 2021 7:06 PM |
I'm sure her friend the righteous Rev. Pat Robertson is happy for the bigoted bitch is working again so he can get more of her money..
Kim & her mom have done The 700 Club countless times & even hosted it once to bring in new younger viewers (ol' Pat took the day off).
Here she is doing a whiny poem complaining about other whiners & takes a shot at "political correctness" & "alternative lifestyles'" (which was code for us when this was done over a decade ago).
Kim complains about folks crying about their bad childhoods & broken hearts down below but in a child star round table the big hypocrite cried her adult eyes out over her own difficult childhood. I wish I could find it to post on here. It's good for a laughs as it's the funniest thing she has ever done.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 15, 2021 9:30 PM |
I know nothing about Kim, her Mom, and Pat Robertson, I just liked The Upshaws. If she has a problem with gay people, then she's working with quite a few on this show.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 15, 2021 10:54 PM |
I love Wanda but her voice starts annoying me after a while.

R11 What you posted Kim Fields doing was art. Did you miss that she was on "Def Poetry Jam" - a spoken word television series? It's right there in the title. Being a Black in Hollywood (most of her life), I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have a career if she came out as anti-Gay. You obviously don't like her but there is no need to lie on the woman.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 15, 2021 11:23 PM |
R14 Yeah, her husband is gay! Let’s not lie on the woman.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 15, 2021 11:43 PM |
R15 So what if he is. You're gay too... what's that got to do with the subject?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 16, 2021 7:24 AM |
Oh, I am sleepy and thought this was about Kim Coles, who was Kim Fields' costar on Living Single.
I like Kim Coles. Could never stand Kim Fields.

[quote]What you posted Kim Fields doing was art. Did you miss that she was on "Def Poetry Jam" - a spoken word television series
That Def Poetry Jam episode was from 16 years ago at this point.
Someone always posts that video and those SAME points in every Kim Fields thread.
[quote] If she has a problem with gay people, then she's working with quite a few on this show.
She worked with Queen Latifah for years so it must have not been THAT big of a problem if she does now.
[quote]So what if he is. You're gay too... what's that got to do with the subject?
R16, If he's gay and she knows he is then maybe she doesn't have as much of a problem with gay people as she did 16 years ago when she did that poem.
As for her being Right Wing? She went into a whole thing about how much she loves Joe Biden and Kamala. So she must not be THAT right wing either.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 16, 2021 8:08 AM |
R18 you're preaching to the choir. I don't believe Kim is anti-gay. My comment was directed at R15 who's flippant comment about Kim's marriage has nothing to do with the conversation. I think it is the same person (hard to tell with "anonymous" tags) who is raising her appearance on Def Poetry Jam (an actor on a television series) as if that is some kind of proof that she is a homophobe. It's ridiculous.

She married a church “ex-gay” (aka a currently and forever gay man) because it was all she could get. She’s obviously a fetish object to many gays because of the fucking facts of life. No one else would want her.

They gotta get rid of the laugh tracks on these streaming shows.

Is Kim over doing the Chitlin circuit?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 16, 2021 11:22 AM |
I’ll check it out, I love them both - Wanda is hilarious and Kim is a Gen X icon, I’m glad she’s back in a sitcom, too!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 16, 2021 1:10 PM |
There are some people on Datalounge who make the decision that a person on their worst day, saying or doing their worst thing, is who they are and that's all they will ever be from that point on. I don't know what is in Kim's heart and mind, but I do believe that people get the chance to evolve or just learn how to do better.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 16, 2021 3:07 PM |
R24 Well said.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 16, 2021 3:38 PM |
The first episode is painful. The actors all seem to be pausing after a punchline, allowing enough time for the laugh track to be inserted. But the laughs are all so tepid and the laugh track so soft, its just odd. If you're doing a show like this and can't have a real audience laughing at the appropriate level to the level of the joke, just shoot without and don't have the actors do the "insert laugh track here" pauses. The whole cast looks awful in this first episode--and I love Wanda and Kim.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 16, 2021 3:53 PM |
I adore Wanda Sykes & Kim Fields....but I agree with R26, the first episode is kinda painful. Or certainly the first 15 minutes were. I thought the back-half was a little better.
I think a certain amount of clunkiness in a pilot/first episode is to be expected, as the writers have a very short time to establish everyone's relationship, while still setting up the episode plot, jokes & punchlines. They were trying to shoehorn in a lot of background information, which leads to kinda clunky dialogue....which was then compounded by these awkward pauses, trying to anticipate where the laugh-track would be inserted.
Having said that....if you can get past the first episode, it gets MUCH better. I've watched all the episodes & I love it!

She never outgrew that whiney voice. To this day I don't understand how Kim Fields still has a career in show business. I've hated her ever since she appeared on Facts of Life. That oversized lower jaw of hers and that speech impediment. Just watching her in that video above (like we're all supposed to applaud her for getting in touch with her blackness) makes me want to hurl. Fuck this talentless piece of shit!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 16, 2021 8:26 PM |
R 28, if Kim Fields make you hurl. Trump must give you heart attacks.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 16, 2021 8:49 PM |
I fucking love Wanda, she reminds me of half of my friends. I also love she has a CANE on the show (although, is she ok IRL?)
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 16, 2021 8:59 PM |
She's fine, RC -- it's just part of the Lucretia character. (who apparently fell through a jet-way & used her settlement to buy an apartment building & invest in Bennie's garage)

Fun Fact: the head make-up artist on THE UPSHAWS is Stephanie Burton (Levar Burton's wife)....whose first job as a make-up artist, in 1983, was on THE FACTS OF LIFE.

I like how Kim’s real mom plays her mom on tv sometimes (along with playing Penny’s mother on Good Times).
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 16, 2021 11:26 PM |
Does it get better after the first episode? I love me some Mike Epps but I DO NOT want to see him as a father and husband. UGH
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 19, 2021 12:25 PM |
Kim Fields is a sentimental favorite since her characters Tootie and Regine are part of my childhood. I watched some of The Upshaws and it was fine. Kim is still her beautiful self and Wanda has toned down her camera-mugging, so that's good.
I wish everyone involved well, but I currently don't have time for shows without Jean Smart.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 19, 2021 12:47 PM |
It does get better after the first episode and it has been either #1 or #2 on Netflix since the premiere, so it's a solid hit.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 19, 2021 1:16 PM |
I watched the whole series and liked it, looking forward to the next season

Kim fields is pathetic. Her fancy closet full of goodwill shit. A tiny beat up Chanel. All the ATL women wearing this beautiful hair and make-up plus the amazing clothes but she is a frump!

Kim Fields spent the whole time she was on RHOA being volubly scandalized by the other housewives antics, sobbing about having to go places without her kids and forcing them to do frowsy “church lady” girl power shit like that no makeup allowed luncheon. She was like a Black Mrs. Garrett, especially with her terrible hair and tragic Dress Barn wardrobe.

R18 Someone always points out how Kim worked with Queen Latifah (like Fields personally did the casting for the show). A job is a job in Hollywood. Kim doesn't want to make burgers for a living after being paid big bucks as a minor. Lots of celebrities who have made anti-gay comments (like Mel Gibson for instance) have had to work with LGBT folks if they wanted to get their careers off of the ground (it didn't mean that they didn't have a personal issue with us that took a back seat to getting a career stepping stone instead).
Also the Biden / Kamala love would be expected from a Hollywood black actress who wanted to keep working. A great number of celebs keep their politics secret. Joan Rivers talked about left wing social issues so much that I thought she would neve be caught voting for a repub (let alone identifying as one & endorsing several GOP prospects).
Ed O'Neil from married With Children is a lifelong dem but had issues with lesbians & his co star Amanda Bearse. Fields could be a conservative dem (aka DINO) like Senator Manchin. According to Gallup, the democrat numbers have been as high as 42% pro life in 1998 & as low as 24% in 2020 but it isn't at 0)% as some might suggest. Kim (& her mom Chip) could be in the socially conservative democrat camp that some religious conservatives of color stake out. From their past words & actions I presume both of the Fields women to have voted for defense of marriage bills like many blacks in California did when the issue came up..
Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Emma Caufield (a.k.a. Anya) said it best when she came out as a conservative about 20 years ago. Her famous line at the time to her political revelation was summed up in a single sentence "I want to work". She first described herself as a libertarian republican but then later became known as a "hardcore republican".
