Elder gays: Tell me why Paul Newman decided to get into the popcorn and salad dressing industries?

And was it all the rage? Or did it seem more banal like celebs today, peddling some brand of whiskey or cosmetic line. Let's discuss.

Charity.

It was always a venture to raise money for charity: 100% of profits are donated.

Ahh, no, the corn! Paul Newman’s gonna have my legs broke.

by Anonymousreply 3May 9, 2021 6:01 PM

He was always fascinated with tossing salad.

Growing up in the '80s/'90s, my parents bought Newman's Own products, because all the profits went to charity. It's a good thing they were good! Yes, I recall it being popular and Newman being commended for it.

He had this amazing pesto spaghetti sauce but it’s gone now. I can’t find it. It was so delicious though.

I think it started with the salad dressing. IIRC, he made it at home and people liked it. Yes, I think he had charitable intentions.

I like his dark chocolate / espresso bar. Hard to find now, though. So many other companies make chocolate bars.

Yeah, I remember it was for charity. My Mom bought some of his products because of the charity aspect.

After Newman's death, there were internal power struggles. The Newman family complained that they were pushed out and that the philanthropic mission was being mishandled. The daughter who had her own organic brand within the company was denied renewal of her license during this time. The company has given away hundreds of millions of dollars to charity, and the man accused to misconduct by the Newmans is now gone, but I don't know what remains.

Gone as in dead?

Sad that this happened. I wonder if Paul Newman intended to create generational wealth when he began Newman's Own. Seems like there could have / should have been enough money and power to go around.

Side note: I still really like the Fig Newmans in the orange package.

His products are great.

I think the tomato sauce was first. And with Ragu and Prego owning the market then, it couldn’t possibly get worse.

by Anonymousreply 13May 9, 2021 7:14 PM

I must say, I make a much better salad dressing.
