David Bowie in the '80s

I'm finally listening to the Loving the Alien box set, which chronicles Bowie's commercially successful period in the 1980s. I've always been fond of his '80s material as it was the Let's Dance album that introduced me to Bowie. The Let's Dance singles were massive, and I also love Blue Jean and the underrated Loving the Alien.

Several of Bowie's soundtrack singles are better than some of his own albums, especially the gorgeous Absolute Beginners.

What's your opinion of '80s Bowie? Was this truly the nadir of his career? Even Bowie himself tried to distance himself from much of the material on this box set. He was not proud of the Tonight album and he was never truly happy with the Never Let Me Down album (which was completely remixed for this set).
