Judy Garland, circa June 1969

She was so thin. This was a few months before her death, no?

Poor thing.

Poor Judy. She got so skinny at the end, but she was still using like she was 50 pounds heavier.

You can never be too broke or too thin.

Judy was one of the most talented singers ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs.

She'd basically stopped eating at that point and was living on booze, cigs, and pills. In the Gerold Frank biography, Liza said that she knew her mother wasn't long for this world during the last few months of Judy's life. That enormous energy and vitality was totally gone. Even Judy herself said that she didn't have it anymore: "I've sprung back too many times--the spring is broken" or something like that.

Judy must have had an amazing constitution to have lived as long as she did. That bout of hepatitis she had in the late 50s was supposed to leave her an invalid with perhaps a 5-year lifespan, but she kept working like a fiend for another decade. Then she had that overdose in Hong Kong in spring 1964 that should have killed her, but somehow it didn't. There were also numerous overdoses and suicide attempts from her mid-20s on. If she hadn't been crazy and an addict, her constitution might have carried her into her 90s.

"That bout of hepatitis she had in the late 50s"

Did Sid pass it on to her from fucking a stripper?

by Anonymousreply 10May 8, 2021 3:17 AM

The bio implies she got it from drinking and pills. However, Judy also fucked around nearly as much as Sid, so who knows.
