I enjoyed it. Renee Elise Goldsberry had the best character and killed it, but the others were likeable. I wasn't crazy about the Rannells plot, but other than that it was fun (and at 8 episodes an easy watch). And the songs were on point.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 9, 2021 7:54 PM |
Sara B was the straight woman and had the least interesting character, but I love that she (not just the character) wrote the group's climactic song, which unsurprisingly is really great. (And I love how it pulls together all the character stuff from throughout the season. Unlike something like Smash, where the songs often weren't integrated well with the writing, they were here.)

Just watched the pilot, there were several laugh-out-loud moments, and the ending was sweet. Busy Philippsās character and performance were kind of cartoonish ā I hope she brings it down a bit over the course of the season. Bareilles is a warm and engaging lead, and Pell and Goldsberry were hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 10, 2021 4:57 PM |
Yeah, I've liked Busy Phillips in things in the past, but her character was the most annoying and her performance was trying too hard. Add in Rannells also being annoying and her plots were the weakest.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 11, 2021 4:45 AM |
I just came here to write basically what R6 wrote.
I didn't care for Bareilles before, but she really clicks as a likable, empathetic lead characterāshe should have had an MTM-style show when she was younger.
Philipps overdoes everything and misses the mark constantly. A Jane Krakowski character without Jane Krakowski's sense of timing. Goldsberry starts out meh and ends up fabulous. Pell does Pell, which is amusing at times, but she's not an actress.
I'm not sure I need another season. (Comparatively, Kimmy Schmidt was my favorite show on TV after the first season). If they were batting higher than .500 with the casting, maybe.

Trailer is insufferable. Fail. Fail. Fail.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 11, 2021 5:01 AM |
Why hasnāt anyone commented on how much Andrew Rannells has porked out? He looks awful in this show. Bloated beyond. Did they drag him out of a river to film this? And he gets to get fucked by Tuc?!???
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 21, 2021 3:45 AM |
Yeah, Andrew looked bloated as hell.

God I hated Busy Phillips in this. And Paula Pell looks 20 years older than the others. It could have been a decent film with Melissa McCarthy as Gloria.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 6, 2021 11:01 PM |
Maybe it will go to Netflix. Hopefully
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 6, 2021 11:10 PM |
If Busy Phillips and her mole roadmap neck is in it then Iām not watching. Hate her annoying ness.

[quote] Trailer is insufferable
That too was my impression. I'd planned on watching the first episode until I watched the trailer.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 14, 2021 3:42 PM |
It was an easy watch, but I don't think I care for Fey-Carlock sitcoms anymore. I really liked 30 Rock at the time and, well, I watched all seasons of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I can't stand the tired-ass Jeff Richmond music on these shows anymore.
Something about the show was way too on-the-nose. Renee Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, and Busy Phillips were all enjoyable. Paula Pell was... there. I thought that the dumb pop songs were too stupid to be funny. I'll probably check out the next season.

r22, I doubt it, considering Peacock only received two nominations--one of which was for this show (Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the pilot). The problem is it's on a streamer no one really watches. Seems like Peacock would have to cancel everything but this and Amber Ruffin's talk show (which got the other nomination) if they care about awards.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 13, 2021 7:03 PM |
I liked it overall, though the writing, for me, wasnāt quite as virtuosically clever as Kimmy Schmidt at its best.
Like a lot of posters have said, Sara Bareilles was the big surprise to me - I knew she could sing like a nightingale, but she did a great job in what would have been the āTina Feyā role ten years ago, and in fact, has a much warmer and accessible quality than Fey does on screen.
Renee Elise Goldsberry was essentially playing Titus Andromedon as a woman, but she was terrific and had great chemistry with Bareilles.
Watching Busy Phillips, I couldnāt help but think what Casey Wilson would have done with the part.
Paula Pell is charming, provided you can accept that she is 60 years old and playing a character that is supposed to be an āold millennialā and also that a forty year old dentist would entertain the notion of giving up her practice to try and re-launch a flash in the pan girl group.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 13, 2021 7:18 PM |
Iām on the third episode and My God! How is this show not bigger? RenĆ©e Elise Goldsberry is fucking iconic. The things hercharacter says š when she told Sara Bareilles that she knew sheād find her in her childhood home because āItalians never moveā? I just died š
The songs are genuinely catchy and I expect titāsgrowth to be a slow burn by word of mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 11, 2021 8:04 AM |
It's not very good, R26.
And REG is fine but far from iconic.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 11, 2021 9:23 AM |
[quote]Paula Pell looks 20 years older than the others.
That's because she is! She's a decade older than I am but she's playing a character nearly a decade younger. Unless lying about her age is going to be a plot point, they really should have hired someone else.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 11, 2021 9:30 AM |
I read this is coming to the UK via Sky later this year - I love Tina Fey so I'll definitely check this out.

Youāll find yourself laughing out loud in unexpected moments. Itās been so long since thereās been a show this funny on TV. The gays, especially, will eat this up.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 11, 2021 11:06 AM |
That's your opinion, r27.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 12, 2021 3:13 AM |
Peacock is NBC's attempt at a streaming platform. No way it can ever compete with the big ones like Netflix, Disney+ / Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime. At one point, I believe it will be merging with HBO Max.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 13, 2021 9:35 AM |
Paula Pell was the lead of that dreadful Mapleworth Murders, co-created by 30 Rock John Lutz for the failed VOD streaming platform Quibi. Lots of SNL stars were guests and regulars.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 13, 2021 9:43 AM |
Kimmy Shmidt = Never made me laugh. I didn't get it. Right from the cult stupidity to the feminine fat gay bestie. Yawn.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 13, 2021 9:52 AM |
I began it last night. I get a kick out of it. Well done.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 13, 2021 9:54 AM |
Sara Bareilles is a very good songwriter.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 13, 2021 5:25 PM |
Just caught up with this show. I enjoyed it overall. Bareilles does a great job as the glue and the others are real scene stealers. (Well, maybe Phillips isn't is on the same level as the other two but she's good.) The comedy level wasn't as consistent as I hoped but that's true of most shows. I was just disappointed that Goldsberry toned down her character's insanity after the pilot. She was giving real crazy eyes in the pilot and it cracked me up.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 3, 2021 6:35 PM |
I binge-watched this series today. Sara Bareilles and Renee Goldsberry are the heart of the show. Busy Phillips's character improved as the show went along. No excuse for Andrew Ranalls and Paula Pell. The finale created hope that Ashley Park will appear in the next go-round but she'll be ten years too young.
All that rapid-fire Tina Fey dialog about maxi-pads and women's empowerment is sort of annoying but there are enough likeable characters to make this show work.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 29, 2021 8:49 AM |
It's garbage.
The second season was probably baked into the original pickup deal.
It won't see a season 3. One season was enough.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 29, 2021 8:56 AM |
[quote] The second season was probably baked into the original pickup deal.
That doesn't prevent TV Channels or streaming platforms to cancel the show if it underperforms. There's always a clause for that in such contracts.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 29, 2021 9:08 AM |
Renee's character says so many mean, but true things š Like telling Sara "Italians never move" or Sara's husband "no black men are named Scott". š
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 29, 2021 9:35 AM |
Bumping this thread because I just finished S2.
I thought S1 was just OK, but absolutely LOVED the second season.
RenƩe Elise Goldsberry's Wickie is the best thing about the show.
She's like 30 Rock's Jenna + Kimmy Schmidt's Titus rolled into one fabulously bitchy, self-absorbed, shade-throwing character.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 13, 2022 7:37 PM |
r44 I kinda forgot about it after watching the first three episodes of the new season, there was just so much other TV to watch, thanks for reminding me.
And I agree, Wickie is the best one!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 13, 2022 7:41 PM |
I binged the first season, but I have no excitement or need to see the second season. Tina Fey must not be reason 30 Rock was amazing. Almost every solo project since has been a turd. I love specific jokes in Kimmy Schmidt and Girls5eva, but the actual shows and main narratives are boring and uninteresting. Girls5eva isn't Great News though --- that show was a piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 13, 2022 8:15 PM |
It takes motivation to check out a new episode but my god once I'm in, I'm howling every time. Right now, I'm watching the one where Wickie covers House of The Rising Sun in a bodega in a face-off with Mario Cantone. Hilarious.
I like how each episode has an issue that's specific to (washed-up) girl groups that they have to solve. It's a very wholesome show, deep down.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 13, 2022 8:39 PM |
R46, I felt the same and basically started S2 on a night when I was bored.
Itās MUCH better than S1, in my opinion, and definitely worth checking out⦠if for no other reason than to behold Wickie.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 13, 2022 8:46 PM |
I love it. Will it have a season 3?

by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 22, 2022 5:38 PM |
I hate the way they make you wait to see if shit gets another season. Is it because they know I'll cancel Peacock the second they do?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 22, 2022 7:28 PM |
Ha, I'm dying at Paula Pell. Her song about Percocet
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 22, 2022 10:50 PM |
^^ "U Ready?" is my fave G5E song.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 23, 2022 6:59 PM |
U Ready? is hysterical.
My favourite is still I'm Afraid from the first season.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 23, 2022 7:05 PM |
That's another great one, R55. The melody, arrangement and Bareilles' deliverr/commitment, make it *sound* like a legit song... until you listen to the words. Hilarious.

Itās cute and very enjoyable so if youāre looking for something light this is it.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 23, 2022 7:38 PM |
Finished it last night. I really miss it already. I'll probably play it again to watch with the husband. I nearly died at the husband's eyes.

Cancelled at Peacock... but renewed for another season at Netflix!
[quote]The move is a shock as itās one of the first original series to move between rival streaming services but Deadline hears that the Tina Fey-produced series was actually canceled at Peacock before Netflix swooped in to save it.
[quote]Although the comedy series, which stars Sara Bareilles, RenĆ©e Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell, has been well received critically and was arguably the closest thing to an awards contender that the streamer had, Girls5eva wasnāt one of its most-watched shows and didnāt bring in the same audiences that the likes of dramas Bel Air and Dr. Death did.
[quote]We hear that Susan Rovner, who oversees both NBC and Peacock in her role as Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, was forced to make the tough decision to prioritize other shows and cancel it after its second season finished in June.
[quote]Fey and Universal Television were also behind Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which moved from NBC, where it had been developed, to Netflix. Bela Bajaria, who oversaw that move in her former role as head of Universal Television, is now head of global television at Netflix.
Obviously some string pulling in the background by Fey and Bajaria, but I'm so glad because it's such a funny and wholesome show.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 27, 2022 6:40 PM |
I know it's not the same, but YOU was first on Lifetime, but when it moved to Netflix it became a big hit.
I know that posters like to diss Netflix, but it creates probably the most popular shows on streaming platforms (well, except The Handmaidās Tale which is on Hulu)
