Why did Didi Conn's career go down the shitter?

Or was it always in the shitter?

I liked her in Grease

Did she at least get her own sitcom, like TV's "Angie," Miss Donna Pescow.

It didn’t—she remains a huge star.

It's that kewpie doll voice. No one would take her seriously.

I loved her! When I was really little apparently I could not get enough of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy stories, and she was Ann in some animated movie a local station showed several times on weekends, as time-filler, I presume.

Then when she was on "Benson" I recognized the voice immediately and apparently had a little kid fanboy freakout about it.

My finest moment!

I heard she was good as replacement on Broadway in the Neil Simon play [italic]Lost in Yonkers[/italic]

I’ve worked w her a couple times. She’s a delight.

Voice and stage actor; I knew it without looking at IMDB.

It's a poor choice to have "con" in your name. It puts the customer's guard up.

Not sure, but I used to watch “Shining Time Station” on PBS as a kid and liked her character. It was a cute although weird show, as children’s shows often are. She did that show in the early 90s.

R8 yeah you're right THAT'S what hurt my career!

Was just going to post about "Shining Time Station" R9--I watched that all the time too which is how I am aware of her.

(For those who may have missed it, it was a kids show featuring Thomas The Tank Engine and friends, that starred Conn and Ringo Starr. Starr was replaced by George Carlin, though I had outgrown it by that time.)

by Anonymousreply 12May 4, 2021 4:34 PM

It was a repackaged Thomas?

by Anonymousreply 13May 4, 2021 4:39 PM

Wasn’t she on Benson?

If rom coms were a thing in the early 80's she would have made a great best friend

by Anonymousreply 17May 4, 2021 5:07 PM

It would be fun to see her in a villainous role.

She was great in Lost in Yonkers. She started as Mercedes Ruehl’s standby and eventually took over the role at the end of the run.

by Anonymousreply 20May 4, 2021 5:24 PM

Didn't she star in the film that gave us Debby Boones number one hit, co starring with a wizened old man?

by Anonymousreply 21May 4, 2021 5:44 PM

R18, my go to would be a murder mystery - and the twist would be she’s not the psycho; she’s the one pulling strings.

by Anonymousreply 22May 4, 2021 5:59 PM

You Light Up My Life, R21.

It's strange how Didi and Donna didn't hold out for a movie career after their big screen successes. They rolled right over into sitcomland like it was nothing.

Didi probably realized there probably wouldn't be many leading lady parts for her and wisely headed to television. She's one of those "only in the 70s" kind of actors.

by Anonymousreply 27May 4, 2021 6:24 PM

It's surprising she didn't do more children's show stuff. She's really perfect for that type of work. Her whole aura is sweetness overload (and is apparently genuine). And hey, it's a paycheck too.
