Thanks, OP, we've all been waiting breathlessly to find out how this will work out for Sheena!

Feminist gold!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 2, 2021 11:31 AM |
Lol that manager was ruthless right to Sheena's face. Looks like Sheena was ready to cry. I never cared for Sheena or her songs. But she does have a gorgeous lower register. Her higher notes are just too thin and reedy.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 2, 2021 12:03 PM |
You’d cry too if you were 18 yrs old and some bitch who has tons of experience told you that you were too ordinary to be a pop singer. Glad those bitches didn’t stop Sheena or EMI records from moving forward.

Lulu is a cunt

Prince certainly liked Sheena!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 3, 2021 2:33 AM |
Sheena's a well known cunt and I don't think what the manager said was all that bad. Saying you've got what it takes to be a movie star but not a pop star is one hell of a compliment.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 3, 2021 2:42 AM |
Lulu who?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 3, 2021 2:58 AM |
Thanks OP for posting this! I really enjoyed watching this last night. Fascinating behind-the-scenes. Din’t she eventually get engaged to her manager?
I think Lulu’s manager was harsh but fair and at that point Sheena’s hair was not bold enough for that era, the beginning of the 80s. Her clothes were prim too. Her makeup got better as she finished recording the record. At the beginning when Sheena is singing at the dentists’ conference she looked so glum lol.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 3, 2021 3:07 AM |
Sheena always had bad taste in clothes and it may have been partially because of her short, fat legs. I remember Mr. Blackwell put her on his Worst Dressed list saying something like she looks like a Scottish Road Runner.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 3, 2021 3:11 AM |
lol r11! i'd look glum too if i was 17 or 18 yrs old and singing at a dentist convention in scotland.

Champagne for Lulu!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 3, 2021 9:28 AM |
R9: what are some of the cunt stories about Sheena Easton? I went down a google rabbit hole the other week and read quite a few recent (last 10 years) interviews with her and she came across well in them all: no ego, self-aware, laughs at herself, etc. I also love that she’s been married four times and the longest lasted for 18 months!
Oh and I didn’t want to but I found myself agreeing with a lot of what Lulu’s manager said. She did look boring. Lulu came across as a cunt though!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 3, 2021 9:49 AM |
I used to live next door to Sheena in Woodland Hills. She was sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 3, 2021 10:16 AM |
I love Sheena Easton. Lulu not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 4, 2021 11:26 AM |
What did Lulu say that was bad? Sheena said that Lulu liked her in that documentary that was made to accompany Sheena's disco album.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 21, 2021 3:56 AM |
Funnily enough, Lulu and Sheena were both nominated at the 1982 Grammys.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 21, 2021 3:57 AM |
I think it was crass to make the comments in front of her in this context, but nothing was said that was intended to be actually cruel and Massey sort of hit the nail on the head in suggesting that Sheena would benefit from a more complex and severe take on glamour - which she did.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 21, 2021 4:15 AM |
Interesting that they showed us Sheena's audition for Dusty but not what she sang for Lulu. Her versions of "I Got the Music In Me" and "I Can See Clearly" were very unexciting.

Sheena originated the lead in a West End revival of 42nd Street. Lulu was one of her replacements after she left. Sloppy seconds.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 21, 2021 2:35 PM |
Lulu was offered the role first but didn't want to do a year in the role. She tours the UK pretty much every year since 2015.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 21, 2021 4:36 PM |
Lulu did a couple of tours with Chaka Khan and Anastasia in the UK. Something like "Here's the Girls!"

Sheena Easton has always been a really engaging interviewee who doesn't suffer fools.
Her discussing Tipper Gore here at around 7 minutes is funny.

My baby takes the morning train. And it ran over that cunt Lulu.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 21, 2021 8:29 PM |
I agree that Sheena sounds better in her lower register, i.e. "Do It for Love." She's a more engaging interviewee than she is a performer. She fell into a rather one note, aloof/contemptuous rapport with the camera. It's comical how she looks at the camera in this performance of "Maybe This Time," particularly the haughty, self satisfied look at the very end. It's not surprising that she failed to retain a fanbase. She knew who she was as a person but not as a performer.

Donna Summer trying to get cute with Lulu, who was clearly not amused.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 21, 2021 9:05 PM |
I wonder how many lashings Donna received from her church ever time she performed "Hot Stuff" or "Bad Girls"... Then again, they probably kept it cute due to her tithes.

Prince wrote a song for her about spending the night inside her pussy.

That’s Sugar Walls r34…great song.
I saw Sheena on Broadway in ‘91 or ‘92 In “Man Of La Mancha”. Sang prettily enough but could not act for shit.

My sugar walls. My sugar walls. Temperature rise inside my sugar walls.

I'd say, "Why should I take advice from someone who hasn't had a hit in 13 years?'.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 21, 2021 9:33 PM |
"Sugar Walls" is puerile. "Strut" is much better.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 21, 2021 9:35 PM |
If I were Sheena in that situation I would have said “ok bitches I’ve heard enough of your shit. Now excuse me while I go on to success-Ville while you two sit around and bump holes”.

Lulu is richer than Sheena, though.

Sheena really did benefit from the Tipper Gore stuff. Imagine that teeny bopper being put on some dangerous-for-kids list. "You Got the Look" came soonafter (her at her best).

Lulu should really be an Oscar nominee, having written I Don't Wanna Fight for Tina Turner.
Janet Jackson got the nomination instead.

Americans LOVE that song so much. In England it was only a B side to this.

I’m American I only know Lulu from Absolutely Fabulous.
The only Sheena Easton song I know is “Sugar Walls”. I don’t think any of her other songs are played besides that. I’m 34 so I didn’t really live through the 80’s.
I didn’t realize she was British and etc given she worked with Prince.

Sheena immediately looked 15 years OLDER with the new wave-ish, severe haircut.
It may have positioned her as a more mature singer and a force to be reckoned with, but I kinda liked the "before" better.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 22, 2021 4:01 PM |
R51 Sorry I’ll leave Lulu and Easton to the people on DL who are over half a century.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 22, 2021 4:11 PM |
Sheena, as others have stated on this thread, is very down to earth, self-effacing, charming when you meet her, and not at all a princess. She was always a hard worker and loves to perform. She still does gigs occasionally. I got to see her at a supper club in Napa a few years back, and she was wonderful and had a great humor about being in that kind of gig. I went backstage and got to talk to her for a bit. She was very laid back and affectionate, and recognized me from the audience, singing along with her hits.
Just my two cents, of course. Still waiting for the receipts R9.

The highpoint of Lulu's career was getting the Jason Orange dick inside her.
The lowpoint was when she was bearding for Kavana (remember him?) the mini gay one hit wonder who became an alcoholic and eventually came out on an ITV2 show.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 22, 2021 6:40 PM |
She's fun on "AbFab" though she looked pulled tight and 13 in the movie of it. Had no idea she'd married a Bee Gee long ago.
