Greek actress Irene Papas exclaims "I'm really an Albanian, bitches."

Irene Papas: I can't leave this world without saying that I'm Albanian

By Oculus Abanian News

"I can not leave this world by not to telling the truth - I am an Albanian. I was born in 1926 my surname has been Leleku," said the actress, according to Albanian media.

Irene Leleku - Papas has played in 90 films. Her most prominent role is that of Penelope in the Italian television series "Odysseus" along with the legend Bekim Fehmiu.

WTF? Does this put her in Merle Oberon territory? She created a false and detailed history for herself.

by Anonymousreply 14May 2, 2021 3:54 AM

Irene Papas is 100 percent Greek. She was born in Greece, and both of her parents were Greek.

Papas was born as Irini Lelekou (Ειρήνη Λελέκου) in the village of Chiliomodi, outside Corinth, Greece. Her mother, Eleni Prevezanou (Ελένη Πρεβεζάνου), was a schoolteacher, and her father, Stavros Lelekos (Σταύρος Λελέκος),[a] taught classical drama at the Sofikós school in Corinth.

She has received the honours of Commander of the Order of the Phoenix in Greece, Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in France, and Commander of the Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise in Spain.[60]

In 2017, it was announced that the National Theatre of Greece's drama school was to be relocated to a new "Irene Papas - Athens School" on Agiou Konstantinou Street in Athens from 2018.

by Anonymousreply 21May 2, 2021 11:05 AM

I'm too lazy to look at a map but is claiming to be Greek when your Albanian like claiming you're Swedish when you're Norse? Or is it like claiming you're Chinese when you're Nigerian?

R51 When? where?

Has Irene Papas ever visited our shores?

by Anonymousreply 53May 4, 2021 12:13 AM

She made a few Hollywood movies early in her career and met Brando in 1954.

""I have never since loved a man as I loved Marlon. He was the great passion of my life, absolutely the man I cared about the most and also the one I esteemed most."

She acted in plays off-Broadway and on Broadway (including Medea) between 1967-1980.

She has had Alzheimer's for several years.

by Anonymousreply 54May 4, 2021 1:33 AM

[quote]r54 She has had Alzheimer's for several years.

Maybe that's why she's mistakenly babbling about her origins.

by Anonymousreply 55May 4, 2021 3:17 AM

R44 She's amazing in that movie, as is the young lead actress (Tatiana Papamoschou). Irene's final couple of scenes hit like a tonne of bricks after everything the character has gone through. Very powerful.

She's from a great generation of Greek actresses. She and Melina Mercouri are the obvious ones, but I think Ellie Lambeti was the most talented of all, with her deep haunting eyes. Jenny Karezi, Aliki Vougioklaki (arguably the biggest matinee star of them all in Greece of all the popular musicals and romances), Zoe Laskari, Rena Vlahopoulou (the Lucille Ball-esque comic actress). All great leading ladies in their own right.

Regarding the topic, i'm Greek Australian (in my 20s) but even I can recall my grandmother speaking on the phone to her relatives back home in Greece in Albanian and "Arvanitika" languages. Some people in my family over there jokingly call each other Albanians as some kind of playful ribbing so to speak ("don't listen to him, he's Albanian" or "you look so Albanian in this photo"), so I wonder if there has been a sense of shame about Albanian heritage (especially when Greek pride is such a big thing, it's quite nationalistic after all the wars etc). But i've mostly lived in Australia so I am not sure.

by Anonymousreply 56May 9, 2021 5:20 PM

Is this like Alec Baldwin's wife?

by Anonymousreply 57May 9, 2021 5:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 58May 9, 2021 7:01 PM

I know she was in Guns of Navarone with Gregory Peck but have no idea if she’s Albanian.

by Anonymousreply 59May 9, 2021 7:40 PM

She says she is so I imagine she is.

by Anonymousreply 60May 9, 2021 7:49 PM

Irene Papas is 100 percent Greek (not at all Albanian). She was born as Irini Lelekou (Ειρήνη Λελέκου) outside of Corinth, Greece. Her mother, Eleni Prevezanou (Ελένη Πρεβεζάνου), was a schoolteacher, and her father, Stavros Lelekos (Σταύρος Λελέκος), taught classical drama at the Sofikós school in Corinth.

Both of her parents are Greek. Her birth surname is the feminine version of her father's last name: "Lelekos."

In 1947, Irene married the film director Alkis Papas; they divorced in 1951.
