The “Nomadland” poll

Well?

by Anonymousreply 20May 10, 2021 6:55 AM

Stupid phone - stupid popups. I meant to include the following options:

Saw it and hated it

Meh

Saw it and loved it

Just watched it. Depressing but oddly fascinating. Not sure what Fern's issue was as she had lots of invites to stay on with people, namely her guy friend. Just a gypsy at heart? Running away from her future?

I am kind of fascinated by the gypsum town story. Did that actually happen? A whole town just died because of the mill shutting down?

by Anonymousreply 2May 9, 2021 4:37 PM

It was tedious.

by Anonymousreply 3May 9, 2021 4:41 PM

It was ok. It's very low keyed. Not a whole lot of dialogue....lots of quick scene changes. It showcases what many people are going through, with losing their jobs, retiring and not saving enough for their retirement...living on just social security. It felt more like a documentary to me, with a little storyline.

by Anonymousreply 4May 9, 2021 4:46 PM

It has stunning scenery.

by Anonymousreply 5May 9, 2021 4:50 PM

Saw it and liked it. Loved the scenery and the general feeling of loneliness. Could have gone my whole life without seeing Frances McDormand shit in a bucket.

by Anonymousreply 6May 9, 2021 4:56 PM

I have to admit, I was curious what they do with those buckets R6. Just stop and wash them out but where?

by Anonymousreply 7May 9, 2021 5:01 PM

Yes, r2, that actually happened. People still live in Empire, but there are no jobs there anymore. It’s on the way to the Burning Man site, so (during normal years) the town gets a bit of income from people on their way to the Burn. But now they don’t even have that - at least not until 2022, at the earliest.

by Anonymousreply 8May 9, 2021 6:48 PM

It was great to see this on screen. The reality of people barely getting by - rather than Kardashians in $50 million house and private jets. This is our future - and our present, MOST people are barely getting by - but all we read about is how much money people are making in the stock market and how the Gates will split their billions. News and entertainment are completely detached from people’s reality - which makes it seem like you’re the only one without millions in your 401k. Glad it got recognized.

by Anonymousreply 9May 9, 2021 6:57 PM

R8 - actually, another mining company bought the town in 2016 and brought in new employee-residents.

I read and liked the book but didn't see any reason to watch the movie. I like Frances McDormand but it's a depressing story, for the most part.

by Anonymousreply 11May 9, 2021 7:09 PM

I enjoyed it. It thought it was a good film. Frances was great in it and I'm not surprised she won the Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 12May 9, 2021 7:13 PM

It might be great but it sounds grim, sounds like oscarbait to me.

by Anonymousreply 13May 9, 2021 7:15 PM

She does come from a rich family; her father has deep ties with the CCP.

But she’s very rebellious at one point, so she didn’t take money from him during the college/grad school period.

I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 15May 10, 2021 1:16 AM

Which one should I watch first, Nomadland or Hillbilly Elegy? I feel like being miserable tonight.

by Anonymousreply 16May 10, 2021 6:17 AM

I saw it and it was dreadfully boring and comatose. Highly recommended for insomniacs who need to doze off without popping pills.

by Anonymousreply 17May 10, 2021 6:25 AM

It was a good film in that it was revealing and thought provoking. I think more people live like this than we realize. I'm single, getting older, and wonder about my own future. Sometimes I get a little scared. It wasn't made for entertainment and would probably have been better as a documentary.

FMcD plays gruff women really well, but I've seen this character/performance before and didn't think it deserved another Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 18May 10, 2021 6:43 AM

Frances Mc has been acting like that practically in every single role since her Oscar win from Fargo. And it's pretty much her real grumpy self.

by Anonymousreply 19May 10, 2021 6:54 AM

That’s the film made by that Chinese Greta Thunberg?
