jakejacob01 Deep thoughts and real talk today.

I’ve prided myself in being an “eternal optimist” for many aspects of my life. This past year and a half hasn’t jaded me so much but opened my eyes to a larger reality. It’s helped me see that often my pursuit of an end goal of happiness may have hindered me from simply enjoying the present. To put it simply and a bit vaguely I’ve “stopped.” Stopped pushing, stopped longing. Stopped reaching for things that will likely never be, and started simply being, and allowing those around me to be exactly who they are without the pressure of expectations. I’ve let go of a lot of who I thought I wanted to be, and in so doing I’ve gained an inner peace to enjoy those in my life today because I have no idea where life will take us or if they will be around tomorrow.

I’ve also stopped pushing for a fairy tale future from my childhood. At almost 40 dare I say I’m finally growing up.

For the first time the children in the US are on the decline, and honestly I get it. There was a time I really wanted kids. I went to adoption fares, I researched and started saving for surrogacy. I was also partnered then, life happens. Circumstances change. My rose colored glasses for the future have been lifted, “the scales have been lifted from my eyes.”

The world and the future have become far less welcoming. Constant wars, recessions, political unrest, climate change, financial crisis with nothing being done about any of these things. Most people I know still have crushing debt student debt and/or medical debt. It all seems a bit hopeless so it’s no wonder couples are choosing pets instead of babies.

Compared to who I was before now I can’t imagine bringing a child into this world right now and I applaud those who do. Maybe as life transitions to a new phase I’ll want them again, who knows.

For now I’m content being present. I’m content being my best self today, and whatever that may mean for tomorrow. A gentle reminder in case you forgot, you are perfect exactly as you are today. I’d you’re thriving then thrive. If you’re in a slump then ride that slump out knowing life gets better.

One is the scariest parts of restarting old workouts is the potential for new injuries. Specifically for guys “my age” are “weekend warrior” injuries which is what I’m most concerned about. I’ve had quite a year, lots of time to reflect, remember, and reminisce about the life I wanted and the life I have now.

When I was a teenager I remember thinking I didn’t have the forever family I wanted and I vowed to build that desired family for myself some day so I did just that. I left Utah, I started my education, I did grad school, I found my potential life-partner and I became the provider I always wanted to be. I built the framework for a life I always wanted. Unfortunately life had other plans.

Then over three years ago that life I always wanted disintegrated around me. I felt like I lost everything. The hope for children, family, that white picket fence, everything crumbled. I was left dazed and confused. I was abandoned again, confused, in a new city, with no family or friends around me, alone without purpose, traumatized. I struggled to find meaning. Then COVID hit and I had little opportunity to establish new relationships, memories, or experiences.

It took time but with new nope and opportunities I began to realize a new hope. I realized that I have a better purpose. I had worked my entire life to build a family and future. Most important I could build my own life and future, even if it wasn’t a life I thought or comprehended before. A life I never dreamed of before. My main thoughts throughout my life is that I have never dreamed how good life could be. So now here I am living a dream I never knew could be so wonderful.

Life is hard. I still want a family. Maybe kids, maybe that white picket pence. Maybe I’ll live in a different country, who knows. But I know I want to build an amazing future with a partner, to take on the world and live my life to the fullest with that amazing partners. If I’ve learned anything it’s that I want to be my best self, to be happiest with who I am now, and to have that special someone to then add even more to my own happiness.

All this cruise talk, I took a trip down memory lane. This year is the 11 anniversary of my first gay cruise ever. I was too young to hear all the negativity around them so I just jumped and I lived my best life. I still had never had alcohol at that point so it was all-natural fun and it was a blast. Mostly I loved how suddenly everyone in the boat had two things in common 1) they were all queer or queer accepting, and 2) everyone just wanted a safe space to have fun.

It was truly one of my first times being in a judgement-free zone about being gay. I did things at my own pace, and still do. It’s crazy how time flies. It’s still fun to let loose and dress up to be care-free.

I dove into the silly costumes and just went with it. Met some amazing people who I still value to this day. Happy 11 year anniversary. What great memories.

Not just getting to my physical equilibrium, but getting my drive and pleasure from exercising again. It’s been an emotional and frustrating journey. Lots of perceived failure. Lots of self forgiveness. Lots of restarting, stopping, then restarting. The key is to choose to let go of the frustrations and failures of today and yesterday and restart the day a new. Self defeat has been an unwelcome constant companion. Allowing hope and optimism to join in has been a choice. I’m still on this journey. Ups and downs and in between. It’s finding joy in the journey, the destination will crystallize when it’s time.

A long time ago I thought this night was a way I was showing love by staying out all night while someone I cared for had a good time. I was sick all night, throwing up, dehydrated, and who knows how bad it could have been. I chose to simply exist through my illness rather than go home because I didn’t want to be the one who ruined the night.

Through growth, introspection, and clarity I’ve learned that putting myself in harm and discomfort for the sake of another is not love. In fact it’s a perfect filter to see if these other people care about me, and better yet, do I care about myself.

I still have fond memories of that night and of this hilarious video of when I could finally keep food down. I live to love, but I have to live for my best self first. Now when I see this I remember to love myself first, take care of my essential, health mind, body, spirit, then I can love others around me all the stronger.

Some physical belongings hold a story, a history, a part of who I am. Prior to coming out I was engaged to a beautiful woman. Thankfully we had a moment of truth and broke off our engagement 2 weeks before the wedding. I also happen to be dear friends with her father for years previously.

After I came out I had a lot of negative reaction, and was grateful to leave Utah for Miami and start my life anew. I became reluctant to talk about myself with anyone from my past. In my second year of medical school I received a message from him that he would like to meet. I agreed, not knowing what to expect. Eventually the conversation turned towards relationships. I was nervous given his Mormon background, AND that I had broken an engagement with his own daughter. I cautiously told him about Ted, about my family and friends reaction, about my life now in comparison to before, bringing him up to speed on years of transition and change. He was amazingly loving, welcoming, and supportive, and continued to be from that day on.

At some point during our conversation I must have mentioned my second-hand stethoscope in passing. A few days later I received a package in the mail containing a brand new stethoscope, worth far more than I could afford, but priceless to my heart. I still cry at the thought of opening that package.

I could go on about what this man has taught me about love acceptance. His presence and support at my wedding when my own family chose to stay away. His continued kindness and communication with me. Given our unique past I wouldn’t expect someone like this to put in so much effort for someone like me. He truly is an example of what love and kindness can be. So, today I am elated. I have found an object that is worth far more than the sum of its parts. I have found an object that represents pure love and charity, acceptance no matter what. I have found a reminder to myself to be like him, and be just a little better every day.”

I took this in Amsterdam (photo credit @runarrafn) years ago. My go-to for the holidays has been to travel in the past. Since I didn’t have any family ties in the past and other people are busy with their own families I have enjoyed using that time to explore the world for myself.

The holidays can be an incredibly hard to for some people. Loss of loved ones, being disowned as I had in the past, and a plethora of other reason that people feel isolated, alone, and memories of what could have been can cut deep surrounding holidays that exlude family togetherness.

For years I dreaded the holidays because it was a reminder of everything I never had and everything I lost. I’m happy to say I’m finally to the point through hard introspection and personal choices to find the joys in life rather than focusing on the losses, that the holidays are beginning to be healthier for me.

Two years ago I even made a point to spend the holidays alone just to prove to myself I could do it. Though I succeeded I highly DO NOT recommend that. Emotional and mental safety come first.

To put it bluntly I commiserated with myself, allowing my mood to sit in misery because I thought moving past this misery would make me forget where I came from, like losing a superpower of my anxiety and loss. Now I see the beauty it relaxing and moving past the yearning and loss and finally enjoying the moments I had.

At 41 years old I finally am learning to focus in the present and the loved ones I have, even if it’s not the dream family I created in my king in my teens. Life is beautiful, but I’m the one who needs to choose to open my eyes and see the vibrant colors that have surrounded me this entire time

I decided to join another gay cruise. I’ve had a lot of interesting feedback over the years, and for a while didn’t understand the judgement.

Years ago I moved out to Miami for medical school. That’s where I came. I still had never had alcohol, gone to a gay bar, or any kind of bar, gone to any real gay or straight party or rave. I spent most of my time studying and hanging out with friends which was normal for me. When I met my partner at the time he didn’t drink either. We decided to go on a gay cruise together and that was my first introduction to any sense of gay community.

I spent the cruise dancing until 12 or 1am. I went on excursions, met new guys, I saw all the shows. I took time to meet people and went to dinner with them. I develope friendships and connections with amazing people I still talk to, to this day.

People say, wow that must be intense or exhausting which has never made sense to me. Finally after I finished medical school I decided to have my first drink. I made my first alcohol experience into a party out of it. Invited my friends to talk me through it. On my next cruise and drank a bit and had a great time. I’m a minimalist so I’d have enough for me to loosen up to help this pasty white boy relax enough to dance.

Over the years my naivety has been slowly stripped away and I see a lot more goes on during these trips. What I’ve learned is much like anything else in life, you make these cruises what you want them to be. If you want to party and dance until the sun comes up, you can. If you want to relax and enjoy a safe space where being gay is not only normal, but you can let your “freak” flag fly without judgement or threat of personal harm then do it.

What I’ve found is the minute the ship leaves the port, everyone realizes we’re all on this boat together. Mostly everyone smiles and says hi. You can find whatever chill activities or trouble you’re looking for.

I often reminisce about when I started med school I literally thought I was going to be the first gay doctor. So innocent, so oppressed, so brainwashed. I felt all alone. It took me about 4 months to finally get the courage to tell my new friends in Miami I was gay. I was so use to the reactions I got from Utah I didn’t want to deal with it.

The most common response in Miami was, “oh wow I had no idea” or “oh cool.” I was taken back at how little anyone cared. Night and day from Utah. But what surprised me more was instead of cutting me out, these friends became protective of me. I felt a support I had never comprehended before. Not only did they accept me for who I am, they were ready to stand up for my rights. That was my first introduction to allies.

Flash forward to Texas with my straight gym bros. On rare occasion a gym patron would make a comment about me within ear shot. I learned quickly to be careful how much I told my gym friends because they would defend us with vengeance. I was deeply touched.

Even my co-fellows would emphatically protect and correct anyone who made a false assumption about me. When a person would ask what my wife does, I would hear a choir of voices around me correcting “husband.”

I struggled when I first came out, with no allies, no examples of gay professionals, no idea what I was getting myself into with grad school. I was admittedly naive. I felt alone and terrified, ready to be judged and looked down on. As I’ve been open and honest in my life I have found friends and loved ones surround me with support. I have found the importance of allies, to give a voice where I can’t. They don’t have to put themselves on the line, they don’t have to go out of their way to defend and protect me, but they choose to be there for me and other LGBT when our voices can’t or won’t be heard. Thank you for giving me the strength to be myself. Thank you for taking part of my burdens away. Thank you for putting my needs above your own. It’s official. My hospital removed the mask mandate last week. 1) I feel naked without it. 2) I still have to wear a mask all the time anyway. 3) I can’t get away with my unkempt scraggly scruff anymore. Booooo

Working with close coworkers for years and finally seeing their faces is almost shocking. It seems like such a small change but seeing my patients full expressions adds to the experience that I’d forgotten. We’ve all perfected smizing but now we can actually smile!

I will miss the protective barrier since hospitals are filled with sick people. Hopefully those with a cough will find their polite side abs put one in to protect those around them.

Until the next pandemic, happy to throw those masks in the air like I’m graduating. Also, so much less acne.
