Or have transplants erased it all along with NYC culture, and character?
I miss gritty NYC. So so much. NYC was ALWAYS gritty. Always. Even going back to the 1800s. Now? Lmaoooo

You were young and male and white back then, weren't you, OP? That's the only way you could be missing the "gritty" NYC of those days.

Nyc isn’t gritty anymore. Unless you count the Bronx.

NYC lost its personality

Definitely still recognizable. But even in the late 80s, most of those places had been gone. It is one of those areas that is architecturally unchanged largely. Even if the storefronts look a little glossier, the Village buildings are still there.

Clearly you speak from personal experience.

I remember several of those stores. "Reflections" card store was convenient, right by the W.4th St. station.

This was posted before - about 5 years ago. I remember replying because I moved a street away in 88 and lived there for 30 years.

I miss 70s New York so much. As gritty and grimy as it was it was still New York with enormous personality often sometimes not very nice but affordable for the low income people like me. I miss the light as well. It was not so built up everywhere with so many monstrous darkening skyscrapers but it was beginning to happen though it really took off in the 80s. I truly hope Koch and Giuliani burn in hell forever.

Get on Google, OP, and walk around the neighborhood!

Looks just the same, just different stores.

I recognize many of the stores in OP's video link, from late 1970's through 1980s, but not a single store survives through to today. I think the biggest difference was the neighborhood communities, both residential and commercial. That does not exist today.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
