I’m 28, lesbian, black sheep of the family/depressive/embarassment, and live in to help take care of my homophobic 85-year old actually-a-bit-senile grandmother. Can’t stand the bitch, either—she all but abandoned my mother growing up (an unwanted ‘oops’ kid), used and abused various friends and colleagues to upkeep a lifestyle and social-climb, kept her late husband (my grandfather) drugged and docile into an early death. When I was a little kid and my mother occasionally asked my grandmother to babysit (rarely happened and my mother tried to avoid it, but fulltime hours are a cruelty), this harridan used to smack and berate me and my sister for the smallest infraction then make us sit in corners in silence.

At this stage of life she unsurprisingly has no friends, and all her other family besides me and my mother have understandably run for the hills long ago. All she cares about is appearances and status and pretending to be an intellectual aesthete (she’s actually rather stupid), and if she meets someone (like me) who doesn’t worship those things too, she goes on the manipulative attack—subtle put-downs, gaslighting, invasions of privacy, passive-aggression on minute, then fake sweetness and vulnerability and crybullying the next. She’s like a Skeksis, shuffling around spewing her bilious opinions and toxic vibes everywhere.

Here's the deal with nursing homes and Medicare/Medicaid. As long as your parents have assets and income, they will be required to pay their own way. The Feds don't start paying until funds are depleted. And if any asset transfers occur before the commitment, the Feds will invalidate it. You'll get them off your back, but you won't get their assets.

Or they’ll let you live in the house until they die and then seize it to cover the nursing home bills. They can take everything except $3000 and let them keep $75 a month while still alive to pay for “incidentals.”

Can't afford a NICE apartment? Live in squalor until you can. I have fond memories of living in a shitty studio apartment in a run down building when I was your age. I hung out with friends, went out drinking and smoked a bunch of pot. I wouldn't want to move back there, but am glad I had the experience. The cheap rent helped me get on my feet as an adult.
