I think BSB had more of a poppy sound starting with Millennium. Their first album had a heavier dose of R&B to it since "I'll Never Break Your Heart", "DJ and "All I Have to Give" sound like Boyz II Men reject songs. NSYNC sounded urban from the get-go and got even more hip-hop influenced as the years went by. I think it helped that JC and JT from NSYNC grew up singing R&B and New Jack Swing covers from their years on the Mickey Mouse Club. JT's direction on his debut fit the pop culture climate better, Pharrell and Timbaland were the cutting-edge. Nick's music sounds flat in comparison and nobody took him seriously as a rock star because of his pop music background. I don't think Nick had much of a chance even though he was the most marketable of BSB.
