Lana Turner was a PROSTITUTION-WHORE (Part 2)
Let’s keep discussing Tits Turner and her dreary “acting”.... along with other vintage tramps of the Golden Age. Barbara Payton, Corinne Calvet, Bella Darvi - all fair game.
When we left off, we were debating whether or not Dore Zachary ran MGM into the ground, if Bette truly loved Lana, and if it was Lana, Marlene or Deanna who fucked the most soldiers at the Hollywood Canteen. Carry on, my pretties!

It's Isidore Schary, pronounced Sherry.

Wasn't Dory Schary the one responsible for shelving "Don Juan," thus driving Ricky Ricardo to drink and physically abuse his dotty wife, Lucy?

Bella Darvi was a Polish actress and Daryl Zanuck's mistress/gf when she came to Hollywood.
Corrine Calvert was a French actress who was "discovered" by Hal Wallis and then came to Hollywood.

R7 I wonder if the name 'Darvi' is genuinely Polish or whether it was confected by Zanuck.
I'm sure I heard Peter Ustinov tell an anecdote how he and Jean Simmmons would laugh at how inept Zanuck's mistress was. She stood in the wrong place and couldn't speak the English language. And Marlon Brando blamed her incompetence as his excuse for leaving the picture.

Bella Darvi got her stage surname from [bold]Da[/bold]rryl and [bold]Vi[/bold]rginia Zanuck, whom she befriended and moved in with, before eventually taking Mr, Zanuck as a lover. She eventually committed suicide by gas in her Monte Carlo apartment.

Bella's name at birth in Sosnowiec, Poland was Bajla Węgier

When Zanuck was schtupping Ms. Darvi in France, he asked his buddy Howard Hughes to let him board the nightly Constellation flight to Paris early so he could get some sleep. Hughes owned TWA then and TWA's Connies had sleeper berths. Zanuck got onboard alone, took a sleeping pill and fell asleep. The aircraft had mechanical problems so another was substituted but the ground staff at Idlewild didn't know what to do with Zanuck, so they called the President of TWA who said, "roll him in the hanger with the plane." Zanuck woke up the next morning thinking it had been a very smooth flight and that he was in Paris, soon to be in the arms of the lovely Bella but he was still in NYC (and presumably still in the hanger.)
Hughes fired the president of TWA shortly thereafter.

After Fox bought FOREVER AMBER , Lana was one of the top contenders for the part. Zanuck was unable to borrow her from MGM and settled on Peggy Cummins, who left the film after an illness (and after $1 million had been spent) and replaced by Linda Darnell.
I love Linda, but she made no impression in the film. Lana would have conveyed sluttiness far better.

Yes: the plot of “Forever Amber” follows the rise of a common streetwalker to being a king’s mistress, so Lana could have identified with that.

R17 Peggy Cummins did not voluntarily leave because of an illness or or otherwise. When the big shots looked at the rushes they thought that she came off too goody 2 shoes and replaced her with the more sultry Linda Darnell.

Actually, yes. Bella Darvi died in Europe, and over there various types of stoves were sometimes used to heat interiors.
Tolstoy is full of them.

IIRC, it was Frances Howard, R18, later Mrs. Samuel Goldwyn.
She had a great marriage to Goldwyn, but truly if platonically loved Cukor who was openly gay.
She is buried next to Cukor at Forest Lawn.

It's interesting how Greg Bautzer, who had his share of volatile and scandalous women (Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Barbara Payton, etc.), married glamorous Dana Wynter, who produced his only known child. I don't know much about Miss Wynter, but she seemed to have lived a life that was away from the public eye.

Merci.
If you were a beauty in Hollywood back then and could pull it off, pursuing marriage to an important studio executive was probably a wiser move, monetarily, than trying for an acting career. Actresses come and go, and it’s hard to sustain a career.
(On the other hand, being married to an unstable gambling addict constantly high on amphetamines liked David O. Selznick would have been a nightmare, so best to pick one of the quieter ones, given a choice.)

"Jul 3, 1976 — Frances Howard Goldwyn, the widow of Samuel Goldwyn, who was one of the last of the pioneer Hollywood producers at his death two years ago at 91, died yesterday at her home in Beverly Hills, Calif. She was 173 years old.

Making fun of Bella Darvi’s gambling issues seems much less humorous after reading her obituary which describes her being sent to a concentration camp at age 12.
I can only imagine what a beautiful 12 year old girl might have endured that would influence her decision 30 years later.

The previous now closed thread brought up Katharine Hepburn and Lana Turner ever working together. That never happened, but Hepburn was the original choice to play the lead in Green Dolphin Street. But Lana's success in Postman Always Rings Twice caused MGM to take her more seriously as an actress so Hepburn was out and Lana in for Green Dolphin Street.

R45 The painting Frances sits beneath is the Goldwyn's Pablo Picasso's [italic]Femme au Chignon Dans un Fauteuil[/italic] (1948)
"The centerpieces of Goldwyn’s holdings are Pablo Picasso’s [italic]Femme au Chignon Dans un Fauteuil[/italic] (1948), a portrait of the artist’s lover Françoise Gilotand, and [italic]Anémones et Grenades[/italic] (1946), a Matisse still life. The Picasso is estimated to sell for as much as $18 million, while the Matisse, bought for $13,500 in 1948, is tagged at upwards of $5 million.
Both paintings will be on offer at the house’s Impressionist and modern art evening sale on May 5 (2015.) The collection also includes works by Milton Avery, David Hockney, and Diego Rivera.
Pioneering film mogul Samuel Goldwyn Sr., lent his name to MGM studios and ran Samuel Goldwyn Productions. His wife, Frances, may have been largely responsible for his purchases, according to Catherine Goldwyn, daughter of Goldwyn Jr., who told the New York Times that “she would present it to the outside world as his eye, but the archives show that she was more involved.”

I don’t think AM was Sarah Bernhardt or anything, but she wasn’t in that same deadbeat class of pretty wooden mannequins that Turner, Natalie Wood, et al. occupied.
She was fairly gifted at performing, and her personality seems too mild to have calculated a singlehanded assault on Hollywood via Machiavellian means.
