Madonna: Body of Evidence (January 1993)

You couldn't escape Madonna's SEX-filled antics in Late 1992-Early 1993. BODY OF EVIDENCE, while not written by Madonna, does seem to be poking at some of her detractors, when her character, Rebecca Carlson, says:

"Women hate me and men think I'm a bitch." (Paraphrased)

Every line Madonna says seems like a Sharon Stone-wannabe zinger.

"That's what I do. I fuck."

Madonna even won the Worst Actress Razzie for this (Anne Archer also won Best Supporting Actress for her BODY OF EVIDENCE performance).

Way too much nudity and graphic sex, like it was trying to outdo BASIC INSTINCT from early in 1992.

Was this supposed to be a serious movie for Madonna, or just campy fun?

It's choices like this that made Madonna's film career what it is today.

by Anonymousreply 1April 25, 2021 10:21 PM

I love Madonna and have been a fan since I was a kid, but I really cannot believe she'd ever do anything out of 'campy fun'. She doesn't have a sense of humour. Anything funny she's ever tried to do has fallen flat.

by Anonymousreply 2April 25, 2021 10:27 PM

I just remember the scene where Defoe eats her character out in a parking garage or something 🤮

by Anonymousreply 3April 25, 2021 10:28 PM

Loved this film and Madonna!!!!

by Anonymousreply 4April 25, 2021 10:30 PM

"Basic Instinct" was released while "Body of Evidence" was in production, so who knows how much the former influenced the latter. But one would think the script was already done and in play.

by Anonymousreply 5April 25, 2021 10:46 PM

It was a bad copy of "basic instinct" and Madonna was no Sharon Stone. William Dafoe was never sexy, not even ugly sexy. I remember the candles ... So "edgy". Campy and unintentionally funny.

by Anonymousreply 6April 25, 2021 10:53 PM

R3 yep lol. I saw it in a theater when it came out. It was like soft core porn only with major actors and Madonna. I really couldn’t believe they actually got this talented cast, even Madonna, who was trying to prove she could act, to do this dreck. Money talks.

by Anonymousreply 7April 25, 2021 10:56 PM

I loooove hate watching this film. Madonna is an (unintentional) riot.

by Anonymousreply 8April 25, 2021 11:48 PM

I think she was at her most beautiful in this and Dangerous Game which came out a year later.

by Anonymousreply 9April 25, 2021 11:53 PM

Did Madonna really think this movie would push her over the top to become an actual movie star?

Or did she just see this as part of the EROTICA/SEX publicity machine?

by Anonymousreply 10April 26, 2021 12:08 AM

My husband and I used to call Anne Archer "the American Kate Bush."

Speaking of Madonna's illustrious acting career, do you remember Who's That Girl? As a young gayling, this was my absolute favorite movie (in addition to Big Business, Labyrinth, and Clue). I recently re-watched it recently and surprisingly, it was actually a pretty good comedy, especially by today's lousy comedic standards.

Who’s that girl? Is actually the one movie where I think Madonna is pretty funny at times. It’s not a good comedy imo but she’s occasionally really funny in it.

Willem Dafoe is STILL sexy and ugly, sexy.

by Anonymousreply 15April 27, 2021 11:54 AM

Sharon Stone was stunningly beautiful. Madonna had harsh peasant face.

by Anonymousreply 16April 27, 2021 3:02 PM

Sharon Stone, who I don’t particularly like, was an American ideal of beauty. Madonna was just trying to be.

by Anonymousreply 17April 27, 2021 3:09 PM

I remember when they were filming that movie in Portland, the bars would always say that Madonna was seen there, or Madonna had stopped by, or might stop by. It was mostly bullshit to get people to come in.

by Anonymousreply 18April 27, 2021 3:38 PM

Madonna's face started to look different around this time, and I can never decide if it's because she probably had some surgery around then, or if it's just a change in her makeup. She had started plucking her eyebrows for the first time, but I feel like her nose looks different too.

by Anonymousreply 19June 16, 2021 10:19 AM

Here are my petty observations after watching for the first time a year ago:

I thought they tried too hard to give her a noir-ish 1940s wardrobe (I get it, this is a noir and she's the femme fatale but a black veil is trying too hard)

Julianne Moore became a better actress as time went on

Fucking someone to death is not a real crime and only in the puritanical 90s would someone be charged for it. Absurd

The scene where Madonna is standing on the car and flashing her pussy is oddly sexless. We don't see her face and pussy in the same shot and she moves very rigidly. I will say that she has a tidy looking vagina.

by Anonymousreply 20June 16, 2021 10:29 AM

Madonna had so many lines in this that you could tell were meant to be sexy, but she couldn't deliver them well, and they weren't even written well in the first place ("have you ever seen animals make love, Frank" or that whole thing about picking strawberries). And that whole rant about the hypocrisy of the townsfolk, while a true point about people, just sounded like Madonna, not the character.

by Anonymousreply 21June 16, 2021 11:05 AM

R21 Nothing could possibly top "Have you ever fucked on cocaine Nick? It's nice"

by Anonymousreply 22June 16, 2021 11:08 AM

R16 speaks the truth. There are hundreds of great still photos of Madonna, but she can't fool the movie camera. She's cruelly miscast in this.

by Anonymousreply 23June 16, 2021 11:11 AM

She looks amazing in Dangerous Game and did a good job with the role. It's a bizarre film and worth a watch.

by Anonymousreply 24June 16, 2021 11:17 AM

Before this came out, I was at the mall and did a survey for a little cash. They took me to a room and showed me a few movie trailers and asked for my feedback. This movie was one of them. I laughed at it and they asked why. I told them every courtroom scene has a cliched melodramatic moment where the lawyer exclaims, ā€œI OBJECT!ā€ and the whole trailer looked ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 25June 16, 2021 11:45 AM

Madonna’s houseboat in this movie is pure camp.

The scene where Julianne slaps Madonna is iconic.

A small thing, but I love the early scene in which the cops are examining the crime scene and the VHS of Madonna fucking her victim is *still* playing.

This movie also has one of the great Stern Black Lady ā€œyou’re on thin ice, counselorā€ judges in ā€˜90s cinema.

by Anonymousreply 26June 16, 2021 11:51 AM

Madonna's problem is that she could never deliver dialogue in a vaguely human manner. She was always so conscious of trying to speak properly that she sounded like a robot.

by Anonymousreply 27June 20, 2021 3:21 AM

Ya'll want to see what 'camp' is? Watch this.

by Anonymousreply 28June 20, 2021 3:33 AM

This is a funny movie. I may need to revisit.

by Anonymousreply 29June 20, 2021 3:45 AM

I keep trying to suggest this one to friends for a "bad movie night", I can't be the only one to know about it! But we haven't got there yet.

by Anonymousreply 30June 21, 2021 11:57 AM

What a sweet Father's Day photo!

28 years after BODY OF EVIDENCE.

[quote] Madonna was no Sharon Stone.

Neither was Maureen Prescott.

by Anonymousreply 32June 21, 2021 1:56 PM

R32, every time I'm using the ice pick on a block of ice, I always say:

"Face it, Sidney, your mother was no Sharon Stone!"

(Sidney's iconic T is from the Spring 1996 Gap collection!)

After reading this thread, I decided to watch it on Prime. I haven’t seen it since it was released, but I all memories of this shitty camp fest came back!

When DaFoe is wrestling with going back in Madonna’s boat house to fuck, the curtains! Billowing out and looking like a giant pussy.

The editing! In the first sex scene she is riding him, we are supposed to believe they are fucking, but you can see DaFoe’s giant, semi hard cock poking out from behind Madonna’s ass!

The Anne Archer body double!

Julianne was so beautiful and young here. Glad this turd didn’t kill her career! It’s also the hottest DaFoe ever looked.

Madonna is just terrible, terrible, terrible.

by Anonymousreply 34June 21, 2021 4:41 PM

In the final scene when she's revealed as a bitch, Madonna's acting becomes risible. Not great of course, but marginally less bad.

by Anonymousreply 35June 21, 2021 4:55 PM

Yet another movie where Madonna plays a hard boiled egg.

by Anonymousreply 36June 21, 2021 5:05 PM

Can we do Dick Tracy next?

I loved seeing her in movies because it was like seeing a u I corn. She was so mysterious and veiled. Movies gave you a chance to see her in movement with dialogue (as terrible as it was at times)

I loved those early movies of hers because movies back then took you on a journey. You were in a different place at the end than the beginning. Movies seem more stationary now.

by Anonymousreply 37June 21, 2021 5:07 PM

Evita was where she finally hit her stride. Although she was not perfect, it was her best role by far.

What about swept away? I don’t even remember that movie.

by Anonymousreply 38June 21, 2021 5:20 PM

Here we go again with Thread number one billion of "gay men" worshipping another female and discussing her body, vagina, and straight sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 39June 21, 2021 5:26 PM

This movie was bad copycat version of Basic Instinct. Madonna is such a horrible actress that it alternates between unintentionally funny, and unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 40June 21, 2021 5:36 PM

Recall the dripping candle wax on Dafoe's torso? Lame. It's as if some 1970s "wild man" wrote this mess and reworked every "hot" moment of its life into the movie. If you wanna be fucked to death, I'll take Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Madonna was/is (?) a memorable live performer, but on film she's inert, hard, trashy.

While looking for Gap ads from 1993 on Google Books this morning, I found this BoE ad from New York Magazine in January 1993!

I remember reading a review that said that Madonna was too small for the big screen. Meaning she has no presence.

by Anonymousreply 43July 12, 2021 6:20 PM

I don’t agree OP. This was the era that most people avoided. I liked her so was down with Erotica. The movie was terrible. To me the Sex book was nothing much - gay guy here: seeing tits & girly pubes isn’t high on my list - Madonna or no Madonna. ( Liked the hitch-hike pic)
