Critical Care: America vs the World
[italic]PBS NewsHour special investigation. Premiered April 22, 2021.[/italic]
The outcome? [bold]"America has the MOST expensive and LEAST effective health care system in the modern world".[/bold]
Millions of Americans have no health insurance and live in fear that one illness could bankrupt them. Even though the U.S. spends far more on health care than other wealthy nations, Americans die of preventable diseases at greater rates. The PBS NewsHour special, “Critical Care: America vs the World,” examines how four other nations achieve universal care for less money, with better outcomes (The UK, Switzerland, Canada and Australia).
People from the UK, Switzerland, Canada and Australia are overall healthier, live longer and don't die from preventable diseases nearly as often as Americans do and they get these results for much less money - spending about half of what America spends per capita on healthcare.
Very interesting and really worth a watch.

Too bad the ignorant masses will never watch it.

Universal, socialised healthcare vs. for profit healthcare. Of course in the US socialised means socialist means commie means unpatriotic. I don’t see how this will change when the masses are constantly fed lies by the murdoch press and its ilk.
MAGA!

I'm in a country with a great public health system and the choice of private care as well. We are NOT a communist country, just a country that cares for it's people.

Doctors are overpaid and it's only top tier for the rich.

You can't fight city hall. They are big and we are small.

[quote] America has the MOST expensive and LEAST effective health care system in the modern world.
Did we really need a special investigation to come to that conclusion, PBS? Even people in undiscovered tribes in the Amazon know that. Along with our previous president, our health care system is one of the biggest running jokes of the civilized world. I, personally, don’t know what the solution is but we definitely got some reorganization to do. Where do we even start??

"But the U.S.A. in N⁰. 1!"
Look at the Republicans who are always the loudmouths on this. Though far from the 1% (or the 10% for that matter) they gloat about the health insurance they do have but they positively delight in what others don't have.
That's what the U.S. is N⁰. 1 at it, sabotaging their self interests in order to deprive people who have less of theirs.

Agreed R1 & R2. The problems with the health care system in the US are insurmountable. Similar to the gun control issues.
I was a bit surprised that this thread didn't get more comments actually.

And yet I had to fly to America from Europe to get a COVID vaccine or wait 9 months.

Yeah it's weird. On some things we're really good but on basic standard of care, no so much.
If we could improve the areas that need improvement.

R10, and the vaccine is FREE! Nothing else is, but we mandated FREE vaccines because they are important to the health of the country.
That should be the way Medicare for All works - FREE, because medical debt is bad for this country and only benefits loan sharks.

R8 They gloat but they always find themselves surprised when a health emergency reveals itself and they find themselves suddenly without a job and insurance. Or when they find their stellar insurance left them in tens of thousands of dollars in debt. They aren't bright. I manage the health insurance for my very conservative coworkers of our very conservative company in a very conservative industry in my very conservative state, and I suppose the look of surprise when they realize (too late) how much they've been lied too never gets old.

We already know this - and we've known it for decades. But Republicans will block ANYTHING that is sponsored by Dems and that is good for the people. (And also bad for their rich donors).
The Dems suck at messaging - this shouldn't even be difficult.

It will be like that some day.

I live in a country that has issues with wait times (especially things like hip replacements) but you won't be bankrupt at the end of it. I'd much rather have that than what I had in the States.
Most people have private insurance for specialist treatment anyway. In the case of my mum who was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, she was advised it would be faster to go through the public system rather than private.
The government paid for everything, right down to petrol money to get to the hospital appointment.

So, now that we all agree that change needs to happen... in what way? What do we do with the pharma industry and what do we do with pharmaceutical benefit management? It's easy to say what needs to change, but how would you all propose to start?
Personally, I think that expanding Medicare to more and more individuals over the course of the next 10 to 15 years is the most realistic approach. But what else?

Generally agree. But the fact that we and Britain - and Israel - are doing the best at rolling out the vaccine does mean something. Brits always bitch about their health system too - but they did a good job getting vaccinations done. And despite the screwed up capitalist system in the US, we did a good job too. I also feel like I get great Health care from top notch doctors in NY. There are problems but it seems everyone complains about their health care system. For the rich, the US system works fine - just like everything else. The entire US system is winner take all.
