If the industry won’t change on principle, it can at least change for the money. Reform would enrich people of color, and everyone else.

I'm so glad that we have nothing else to think about.
Demands for false equity distracts with societal needs for universal true equity.
And so do trolls such as the execrable OP.

The white man needs to get his act together. There is more to life than big white cock.

If there is anti black bias, then what the hell is going on with Asians, middle easterners and latinos? Together and individually they make up a larger market share. African Americans make films meant only for African American audiences and are much better represented in mainstream films. They are way over represented during awards season which means jack shit.

I work in TV as a writer.
Sorry, but there's no way their's anti black/brown bias, at least not in TV. Hasn't been that way for years. It's actually exactly the opposite. Which is fine. Whites had a decades long run at the top. But being white is a serious hinderance to any project (unless you're already a name) these days.
I just had a meeting with my producer for a TV series that we're taking out soon and I have to rewrite the entire series to give it POC leads so that he can give it to female POC show runners. It was conceived as a colorblind series, but not even that was good enough.
I haven't read the article, but the very premise is a fallacy.

Another BULLSHIT article from the NYT.

Yes R5--it checks the Woke box and they got an outside writer so on one on staff had to take credit.
The stats he uses show correlation, not causality.
He also ignores that a sizable percentage of Black entertainment is aimed at Black audiences. Tyler Perry movies and BET off the top of my head. No other English-language group has that sort of segregated entertainment.

So some consulting firm was hired to produce a report that supported their hypothesis that HW is “missing out” by not producing black projects.
Anyone could get a report authored to your preferred conclusion if you pay these firms enough. Assuming that increasing black representation in front of and behind the camera is going to somehow magically unlock $10 billion in revenue ignores how fractured the film and tv industries have become in the last decade. It’s just not happening. The fastest growing market is and has been the Hispanic demo.

African Americans dominate pop music and have for quite a few decades now. Perhaps they are expecting the same kind of dominance when it comes to movies and TV.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 25, 2021 2:57 AM |
R8- Blacks certainly DOMINATE when it comes to having a BOTTOMLESS well of grievances.

Just watched the new Mortal Kombat. Lots of sexy Asian/Eurasian actors who I never really see cast in anything else.

What is the context of the article? Is it saying Hollywood would earn billions more if more movies starred black casts? I don’t think this is true at all. This wouldn’t work in the Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, Russian, or European markets. They would lose money in those markets. Where is this $10 billion coming from?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 25, 2021 3:21 AM |
If the article had changed it’s premise to anti-minority instead of just anti-black, then I could see how Hollywood could gain $10 billion more since it’s opening up more representation for Asians, Latinos, and other minorities instead of just black.

Blacks are already way over-represented in TV and Movies. The Oscars nominees this year are practically all black.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 25, 2021 3:29 AM |
But in saying this, more black people need to push to be writers, actors, directors etc. Having been to film/theatre school, the amount of black people who apply/audition is a much smaller percentage compared to whites... Is there as much interest as white people in film/tv industry?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 25, 2021 3:39 AM |
13% of the population is black. So how many black movies etc do we need?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 25, 2021 4:33 AM |
And would those black movies really generate $10 billion more a year??
