When Florida leaves Maude they don't mention her moving just that her husband now makes enough money that she doesn't have to work.
How did Florida and family end up in Chicago when Maude was set in suburban NYC?

She teleported via Vivian's vagina.

Florida and Wilona went to high school together so I assume the family started out in Chicago and moved to NYC. Then returned when things didn't work out.

But things were working out. When she leaves Maude her husband has just received a big promotion.

Florida was retconned not to have existed in the Maude universe. Her character was placed into a sitcom Norman Lear was already developing. So was John Amos as her husband, but they changed his name. Their backstory was changed and Maude was never mentioned.

R9, I thought you were going to say "the hellhole that is Bea Arthur".

That John Amos bulge in worn out jeans, damn, damn, DAMN!

What makes even less sense is that Florida's husband has received a big promotion and pay raise so she can quit her job, then in Good Times James barely manages to grab part-time work here and there and they're living on public assistance.
What R7 says explains all that, though.

They were part of the black family exchange program between Harlem and the Near North Side of Chicago, Rose.

Right...and moved on up into the sky in luxurious Cabrini Green. If it was even remotely realistic, Jay Jay would have been shot the first time he opened his stupid mouth.

That would explain why the kids all had very strong New York accents! :)

Yes Rose, because maid positions in lower Westchester were so often filled by black women living in Chicago slums.
The women had employment agents worldwide looking for positions for them, and were flown in by the potential employer for the job interview.

Why did Florida's husband change his name from Henry to James?

R16: Wouldn't that have been just a shame....
