Christian Republican dad not a fan of "wokeness" at Disney World!
[quote]Disney is in the process of taking the woke scalpel to the Jungle Cruise. Trader Sam is out because he might offend certain people. Every grown-up in the room realizes that Trader Sam is not a representation of reality and is meant as a funny and silly caricature. It is no more based in racism than every Disney caricature of an out-of-touch white American dad.
[quote]The next time I ride Jungle Cruise I will not be thinking about the gloriously entertaining puns of the skippers, I will be thinking about Disney’s political agenda. That’s a mood killer.

And yet he will go, spend lots of money, and add to the "woke" corporation. One thing " Christians" will not do is boycott Disney. They might say they will or attempt it, but it will fail.

A little unseemly for a far-right Clark County, NV district attorney writing a far-right op-ed for a Florida newspaper, but it's pretty on brand for Republicans these days.

I too am surprised by adults who are this invested in cartoon characters.
I often scoff at some of the more outrageous examples of “wokeness,” especially where people are going a few extra miles to virtue signal how much better they are than the rest of us. 🙄
But removing a character at a theme park is hardly that. It seems appropriate to take that step at a time that we are closely examining cultural touchstones to more fully appreciate the subtle messages they can send.

If anything HE is injecting his politics into the park, not the other way around.
Does he actually have kids? Strangely he doesn't talk about them - just talks about his 'family'. Very odd.
This guy is a greasy, fat loser with an unhealthy relationship with Disney. The cord needs to be cut so he can grow the fuck up. With his 'family' - which I don't believe.

Disney was one of the first big companies to offer benefits to the same sex partners of its employees. It's also been quietly snipping controversial segments out of its productions and pulling others out of circulation for many decades. And last time I was at Disney World there was a filmed introduction to the Hall of Presidents show that included some surprisingly progressive discussion of American slavery. So the idea of it as some right-wing monolith is absurd. Like any other functioning American business it's in the business of pleasing its customers and making $$$.

R100 knows what's up. 'Woke' as a definition has morphed from having awareness and empathy for important social justice issues (originally, specifically those pertaining to the Black community) to becoming a moralizing, religious crusade - hijacked by radical leftist elites. I say this as a lifetime leftist and progressive. Wokeness has NO relationship to actual liberal, progressive ideologies. It's dogmatic. And more about moral/ethical superiority and spreading group-think absolutism than actually solving complex socio-political issues.
Some of the leading, progressive intellectuals (like John McWhorter) have brilliantly deconstructed "wokeness" and its inherent 'religiosity'. If you go against the woke orthodoxy, be prepared to be taken down by their inquisition. Any free-thinking, TRUE progressive would distance themselves from this authoritarian movement ASAP. Their ideas and solutions are uni-dimensional and divisive by design.
But the simplistic, virtue signaling soundbites (that fit rather nicely in Instagram squares) let the "woke" feel good about themselves and their virtue, so its popularity rages on. It's slacktivism at best and a religious cult at its worst.
|by Anonymous||reply 107||04/24/2021|

R109 No, they changed that a few years ago, with one of the women now a pirate and she's auctioning off loot. The reaction to that change from the Disney faithful was pretty much what you'd expect. Lots of whining about how it's no longer historically accurate - because, of course, everything else on that ride is totally educational.

There is nothing wrong with watching Disney as an adult. Honestly, it would raise more of a red flag if he were an adult gay man, but you still have plenty of gay men into Disney and Star Wars, which is just as childish. If you're a parent, Disney had reliable content that you can watch with your children. There are also plenty of adult professionals who work at Disney and other animation studios who are passionate about their product.

R128 I see, yes, Trader Sam is at Disneyland and that other guy is at Disney World. I watched a video of the Jungle Cruise because I couldn't remember it and the animal animatronics is pretty good, they should just remove the headhunters and make more animatronic animals.
Disney obsessives are so fucked in the head. "Wokeness" has definitely become a parody of itself, but that doesn't mean that retrograde stereotypes need to be kept in perpetuity because people are oddly attached to a ride at a theme park. Get a grip!
What made me see the Song of the South racism drama in a new light was realizing that many people in the 1940s actually complained about the film and thought it was racist at the time!!! It's not something that suddenly "became" racist. The NAACP even spoke out against its release at the time.
I guess most of the people who get in a tizzy about Disney removing stuff are those local freaks who spend their non-working hours at Disneyland, aren't they? I've been to Disneyland exactly once (as a child) and I couldn't give two fucks about what they remove from their rides and attractions. I guess a suicide hanging at the Haunted Mansion is a bit tasteless these days, so why shouldn't they remove it? Why does everything have to be the same FOREVER?! Why do I even have such strong opinions about this topic?!

I took a look at one of the main sites these obsessives gather at, and there's a 70+ page thread full of them whining about how Disney are now allowing their staff to not cover up their tattoos. People saying that the "premium" Disney experience will now be the same as going to some carnie fun fair.
Mind you, a significant amount of DL will probably agree with them on that issue.
|by Anonymous||reply 131||04/26/2021|
Wonder how he feels about Disneyland taking the shutdown as an opportunity to overhaul Snow White's Scary Adventure into Snow White's Enchanted Wish, which re-does and pluses a lot of the effects. It also tells the whole story, instead of just ending abruptly.

Check out the strange world of Disney YouTube if you think he's unusual.
Disney also just put out their Pride merch for the year. This is the first year they've explicitly said it's for Pride (being advertised with a family with two moms), rather than just rainbow stuff that just randomly comes out in June. His head will explode.

They aren’t politically rallying to oppress gay people. And in fact, 99% of trans people support gay people and our rights. The fact remains that conservatives still largely don’t, even the gay ones on this forum. We have conservatives like Defacto who have openly opposed gay rights and worshipped straight people. This is a weirdo who won’t even have sex with a fellow gay or bi man because he only wants a “pure” straight man.

Then why was it criticized by contemporary critics as portraying slavery positively?
Bosley Crowther said the following about the film after its release:
[quote]"the master-and-slave relation is so lovingly regarded ... that one might almost imagine that you figure Abe Lincoln made a mistake. Put down that mint julep, Mr. Disney!"
Look I'm not saying copies of it should be burned and destroyed, I don't even agree with it not being publicly available. Nothing's wrong with acknowledging the faults of the film.
|by Anonymous||reply 182||05/05/2021|
R183 Well, to be fair that's Disney's fault. If they had been more EXPLICIT with the film, people wouldn't be calling it racist. They should have been more thoughtful when making the film, that's the consequence of their actions.
|by Anonymous||reply 185||05/05/2021|
R186 You're the one arguing that Song of the South can't be racist because the KKK didn't lynch Uncle Remus, but okay.
|by Anonymous||reply 187||05/05/2021|
R189 No I'm not. You realize Disney themselves is the reason Song of the South isn't available, correct? The Birth of a Nation is public domain, which explains why it's continually available. Who said The Birth of a Nation wasn't racist, by the way? I never did.
|by Anonymous||reply 190||05/05/2021|
R192 Wait, where did I say that Song of the South could never be released? I just said it's racist.
I actually think it should be released. I think people should be able to see the film for what it is. Suppressing it has created much more mystique and curiosity regarding the film. It's racist yes, but you're right it is NOT on the same level as Birth of a Nation and plenty of other films. Why Disney doesn't do what Warner Brothers (you know, showing a little caption saying that the cartoons were made in a different time), is beyond me.
R193 You sure seem to have a lot of opinions about MY opinions when all *I* said was that yes, Song of the South is indeed racist.

It is ironic that James Baskett gives a very beautiful touching performance in this film and and is reduced to being an Uncle Tom by people who have 14 million dollar homes while underpaying staff. Also the beginning of Zip a Dee Doo Dah is one of the greatest moments in any film up there with the match in Lawrence.
Also I remember back in the 80s when I saw the film people were complaining about about the scene where Warrick dresses down Baskett and I thought how stupid could people be completely missing its point. All they saw was a white woman humiliating a black man. That kind of thinking is scary. And it's also scary that the Times would omit the film from Warrick's obituary. The attitude of we're so above everyone because we fawn over the decisions of fabulously wealthy powerful people if they're on our political side in terms of do as we say not as we do AND provide enormous amounts of advertising revenue.

I think Disney should make it available on say, Disney+ and provide the appropriate warnings and some context before and after it. Even if it makes the company look bad and they have to say, "yeah, it's pretty racist and we fucked up. Sorry." Treat us all like adults. Racists are gonna racist whether you show it or not, and black people can choose to watch it or not.

I had a straight male friend who loved going to Disney World for vacation with his S.O. He made it sound as if there were facilities for adults, bars and the like, or maybe I'm misunderstanding. I thought it was probably a kind of Club Med-like experience, just a place to vedge and forget about the world in very controlled, predictable surroundings. I don't know how into the characters and rides he was.
|by Anonymous||reply 252||05/06/2021|

I don't understand why anyone would go to Disney World if they just want to do adult things though.
|by Anonymous||reply 253||05/06/2021|
Epcot used to be for adults which children could enjoy like a world's fair with cultural activities. But they've thrown that out the window to slowly turn it into an amusement park. Still there are great places to eat if you are into that and have plenty of money.
|by Anonymous||reply 254||05/06/2021|
R252 - I haven't been there in almost 30 years, but even then, there were adult things to do. If you have someone to watch your children in the evenings, it's a great time. There were excellent restaurant and some good entertainment.
My friends just went in mid-April (two gay couples) and raved about it the restaurants. And these guys aren't "Olive Garden-types," they know from great food (well, at least two of them). They liked STK (overpriced but excellent) and mentioned two other restaurants they loved. They did other things also.
Adults can have a great time there.

I was surprised to see Song of the South on Amazon. It is clearly a pirate copy and I wonder where they got a print of the film. Somebody wrote it looks very good. I would love a Disney released bluray. If the original elements are in good shape it would look spectacular. It's a lovely film but I'm white so I don't know how African Americans would respond if they got a chance to see it. Would they say it must be banned or would they say it should be released but with a disclaimer? Disney should show it to test audiences(not Disney employees) to see the results they would get. To say this has to be banned without people's input is condescending and censorious.
I am surprised Disney did not send Amazon a cease and desist order.
