It’s very LOL funny. The darker-skinned nerd tries to hard to portray a geek with the fake nasal affectation and all (just like Johnny Galecki did in TBBT) but the tall greasy-haired guy is hysterical. And their “Penny” is good as well. Plus, it’s really nothing like TBBT.
Their names are Richard Ayoade, Chris O'Dowd and Katherine Parkinson, and they're all brilliant.

Isn't this show like 15 years old?
OP - there's another show called LOST that's all the rage too!

And here I thought it was a “period” sitcom, with accurate “then” technology, graphics, and references to Amazon (as a book store) and Harry Potter. Was it actually filmed in the 90s/00s?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 22, 2021 11:18 PM |
The mixed race nerd is gorgeous 😍.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 22, 2021 11:22 PM |
It pre-dates TBBT, R3/OP.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 22, 2021 11:22 PM |
Wait... I'm American and I can't believe OP has never heard of this show.
It's a classic, one of the best UK sitcoms ever, up there with Fawlty Towers and Black Adder and it certainly launched O'Dowd's career.
Have you really never heard of it OP or are you just putting us on.
(Regardless, did not realize it was on Netflix now, so thanks for that.)

If only there was a way to find that out

What is Chris O'Dowd's accent called? He has that really annoying kind of English accent. Is that from a specific county / province / whatever?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 22, 2021 11:51 PM |
One of my absolute favorite shows of all time. I rewatch it every few years
IT Crowd Frasier Buffy
when I can't find anything I want to watch

It's called an Irish accent.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 22, 2021 11:53 PM |
r9, I think it's Irish?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 22, 2021 11:54 PM |
Matt Berry is hilarious too. I'll watch anything with him now.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 23, 2021 12:16 AM |
Chris O'Dowd also sports a massive dong; I love the show too.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 23, 2021 12:17 AM |
The 2006 version of Chris O'Dowd or Richard Ayoade could do absolutely whatever they wanted with me.
(Yeah I know they're both straight.)
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 23, 2021 12:20 AM |
That isn't a normal Irish accent. It has to be from a specific area. The one-eyed guy from Harry Potter has it too.

Dublin, IIRC. Very different accent from the rest of Ireland.

This show was my first introduction to most of these actors. Have loved them all ever since. I recently went through a phase of watching old episodes of The Big Fat Quiz on YouTube, on which Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding are often paired up. They are very funny together. Though the only joke I now remember is the host introducing them as "a geography teacher and his pet crow."
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 23, 2021 12:29 AM |
It's one of those shows I've heard of but got into it recently thanks to Netflix algorithms and my love for Matt Berry. Did it air in the US when it was originally on?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 23, 2021 12:32 AM |
Love love love this show and everyone in it. I too watch it every few years or so. Matt Berry is great in Toast of London and What We Do In the Shadows!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 23, 2021 12:37 AM |
It's older than TBBT, probably an "inspiration" too
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2021 12:52 AM |
Nothing against Matt Berry but I slightly preferred the first boss. I thought that character was more satirical and I liked that vibe more than Berry's more farcical tone.
I think my favorite ep is the one where they think Jen is dead. But there's so many good ones it's hard to choose.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 23, 2021 11:19 AM |
Chris Morris was the first boss Denham, father to Matt Berry’s Douglas. Knowing Morris, he probably only wanted to do one season and then return to his own projects.
Did it air in the US when it was originally on?
No but they attempted a US version with Joel McHale in the O’Dowd role with Ayoade coming over to play Moss. Apparently the pilot was terrible and the project was shelved.
Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade first worked together on Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace which is one of the most out there, hilarious shows ever made. If you haven’t seen it, give it a go— all six eps are on YouTube.

The best episode is when Jen is asked on a date to see "Gay: The Musical", and Roy and Moss come along.
Roy is mistaken for a disabled man.
And Moss is mistaken for a bartender. It's all very funny.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 23, 2021 11:45 AM |
Oh gawd, I'd head about the US pilot and blotted out the memory. Good thing it never made it to air. But then, I can't stand Joel McHale.
I read about a third of Ayoade On Top, his deadpan pseudo-academic analysis of the film View From The Top (starring DL fave Gwyneth Paltrow.) It's pretty amusing but it's essentially one joke stretched out for 200 pages. One day I put it down and never picked it up again.
Another favorite ep is "Jen The Fredo" in which Jen is supposed to entertain clients from out of town and gets them to play Dungeons and Dragons with Moss and Roy.

R25 'I'm disabled! They stolen my wheelchair!' never fails to crack me up
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 23, 2021 2:19 PM |
There was an American version of The IT Crowd with Richard Ayoade and it bombed terribly, but allegedly lead to the development of The Big Bang theory.
And OP, Richard Ayoade IS a nerd, he doesn't play at it.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 23, 2021 2:21 PM |
Chris Morris was the first Reynholm, he's hilarious and a very smart man.
The "I'm disabled" episode of The IT Crowd is the worst by far, clumsily written and really homophobic, so of course some DLer loves it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 23, 2021 2:23 PM |
Katherine Parkinson’s Jen is hilarious! And she’s so pretty and nice to look at too.

I liked that I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU'RE FROM IRAN episode. That fight was hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 23, 2021 3:14 PM |
Katherine Parkinson is really good, the episode where she's dating a guy that she suddenly realizes looks like a magician is one of my favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 23, 2021 3:16 PM |
Richard Ayoade is great. Watch both of his series Gadget Man and Travel Man. Both hilarious.
He is married to Lydia Fox, sister of the detestable Laurence Fox. I bet their family dinners are something else.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 23, 2021 3:21 PM |
I didn't know Lydia Fox was Laurence's sister. My goodness, that must cause some tension in the family.

I wish the internet episode wasn't marred by the weird subplot of Douglas dating a trans woman. It's pretty transphobic. It's a bummer, especially because the main plot is so fricken funny.

I can't get past the laugh track
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 23, 2021 4:07 PM |
R39 it's filmed in front of an audience, no laugh track in UK sitcom.
I went to a recording of Upstart crow, it's a nice experience.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 23, 2021 4:23 PM |
There are stories of rewrites being done AS the episode was filmed in front of a live audience, I suppose they might sweeten the laugh track some but it's not all canned laughter.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 23, 2021 4:24 PM |
R17 / R18 it’s nothing like the Dublin accent - he’s from Roscommon in the mid-west of the county. It’s a generic sort of country accent. Dublin accent (of which there are several) is entirely different.
Irish accents are wildly different to each other but maintain similar treatments of vowels as a connection to each other. And accents will change over sometimes a very short distance, you could have two identifiably different accents a kilometer apart.

I rarely laugh out loud when I'm watching TV alone, but that bit got a weird hyena noise out of me.
Kinda surprised the show didn't use a laugh track. The sound editor certainly made some strong choices.

If you had to, absolutely, simply, had to, who would you have sex with, Roy or Moss. No you can't say they are both disgusting. We know that.

R49 I love that episode of Travel Man. When they take the mini cars out into the city, zooming around in and out of traffic!

R51 when they accidentally break a very expensive bowl, they felt like shit...
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 25, 2021 7:03 AM |
This series is a CLASSIC and one of the very few shows I've watched all the way through multiple times.
Chris O'Dowd's character's monologue about being kissed on the butt by his masseuse.
Jen introducing "The Internet."
The bike episode.
The episode involving the wheelchair.
And of course the episode where Jen is avoiding a co-worker she slept with, the guys tell her that she's "dead" as the excuse for why she can't see him and the guy not only believes it but thinks she's haunting him because he keeps seeing her.
