Am I wrong or could her comment have been referring to EITHER Judi Dench of Julie Walters? She specifically said it wasn't Kate and that Frances is a good friend. But she didn't disqualify Julie Walters. Billy Elliott was an important movie for Walters. I'd argue that, in the grand scheme of her career, Chocolat was not equally important to Dench. Who, of course, had recently won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love. And, who would go on to an even bigger film career in her late age and additional Oscar nominations. Whereas, Walters perhaps rightly, though Billy Elliott might be her last shot? Just a guess.

Also, yes, I fucking hate the "misinterpreted" line. And I don't see how it's "out of context" when the topic was reaction to her Oscar win. She should have just owned it. She deservedly won the Oscar and one of her fellow nominees was apparently less than gracious about it.

If only Miriam Margolyes had been a fellow nominee. Then we KNOW she would have been the culprit.

I think MGH is a fine actress, but it was a graceless comment. And my guess is Julie Walters had no illusions about her chances at winning (though she would have been very deserving)—if anything, she, like most others, though Hudson was the likelier winner—she may have been more startled by Harden’s win than anything else. It was how I felt when Colman beat Close—if they weren’t going to give to Close, McCarthy would have been second choice for me—far above Colman.
