Gay guys, do you wear jewelry?

Tell me what you wear. I get the impression most USA gays don't bother.

I'm a Spaniard so yes, I wear fine pieces handed down to me from grandfathers, father, etc. These include gold chain and cross that typically can't be seen, a gold bracelet and a garnet ring that belonged to my abuelito.

Men look muy hawt in jewelry IMO.

by Anonymousreply 81April 22, 2021 10:41 PM

I dont. It gets lost, caught up in machinery, damaged etc

But on some guys, like the one in OP's pic, it can look very good. I like seeing it on other guys, but then I do prefer guys more on the fem side so your mileage may vary

by Anonymousreply 1April 22, 2021 3:30 PM

I think it's harder for men who didn't grow up in the Catholic Church to appreciate the kind of jewelry described by OP. Quite frankly those cross necklaces just make me think of '80s Madonna and no offense, but were I to wear a ring with a gemstone it would be nicer than a garnet.

by Anonymousreply 2April 22, 2021 3:37 PM

I accept that British guys wear them, but pinky rings strike me as effete.

by Anonymousreply 3April 22, 2021 3:39 PM

Sorry, but I’ve witnessed too many Donning Of The Rings ceremonies over my lifetime to ever desire jewelry.

Watch somebody shower, lotion up, and then put on twelve rings. That’s when you haul out Dorito’s tacos.

by Anonymousreply 4April 22, 2021 3:45 PM

R2 The garnet in Spain is considered an appropriate masc gem stone. The garnet is also a representation of the Andalucian sun in our culture.

Couldn't resist posting this link from a series I follow. This fellow is a really, really nice guy! Another member of this Pakistani group bears an amazing resemblance to Harrison Ford.

No.

by Anonymousreply 7April 22, 2021 3:56 PM

I hate jewelry and think less of people - men or women - who wear it.

It's a step up from a tattoo, but not by much.

Also: perfume/cologne (just wash yourself - you'll smell better); watches (useless now that we have phones); hats (unnecessary except for winter); fascinators (vomit); and other such items.

I wear a tie with a suit because it's traditional, but dislike patterned fabrics overall.

I prefer a very severe appearance.

by Anonymousreply 8April 22, 2021 3:59 PM

Are cuff links and tie clips considered jewelry? If so I have a few nice ones.

by Anonymousreply 9April 22, 2021 4:04 PM

I despise jewelry on men. It's feminizing and clunky. No man needs it. It looks dated, foolish and is a waste of money. If I see a man with jewelry I turn the other way. Their ideas and choices are immediately questionable. I don't care if it's vintage or expensive or artistic. It's idiotic. Eurotrash wear jewelry. The only acceptable jewelry on a man is a wedding ring, and that needs to be just a simple band. Anything else looks like fucking Liberace. *shiver* Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 10April 22, 2021 4:05 PM

I would wear a fascinator - for some reason I always get an Eileen Brennan vibe.

Of course, I’m a guy, but my hair is fucked anyway and some feathers might distract.

by Anonymousreply 11April 22, 2021 4:07 PM

The only thing worse than jewelry on a man is a FUR COAT. That NEVER has looked good on any man. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 12April 22, 2021 4:10 PM

r8, you sound toxically judgmental and shallow. You're obsessed what other people put on their bodies.

Get OVER yourself.

by Anonymousreply 13April 22, 2021 4:11 PM

R12, I would make an exception for Edward Gorey, but he was a true original in so many other ways.

by Anonymousreply 14April 22, 2021 4:11 PM

R13, I don't care what other people put on their bodies. Wear a ring through your nose for all I care. But I am going to think you have bad taste. Hope that's okay, peanut.

by Anonymousreply 15April 22, 2021 4:12 PM

If I wear cufflinks they are the cloth variety (I believe called Turk's head).

R13 hasn't been fucked in years.

by Anonymousreply 17April 22, 2021 4:13 PM

One thing I’ve learned about men’s necklaces is that they serve as collateral. So, that huge necklace you see means that its wearer can bail out of jail. The more expensive the necklace, the more its wearer can pull off and Still obtain bail.

by Anonymousreply 18April 22, 2021 4:16 PM

No jewelry, no tats, no cologne, just minimal manscaping.

I like my body pretty much the way it was made.

by Anonymousreply 19April 22, 2021 4:17 PM

[quote] R13 hasn't been fucked in years.

Ignore-dar says you're the OP. I was actually [italic]defending[/italic] you at r13, and yet for some reason you still hit me with an ad hominem attack?

What a POS you are.

by Anonymousreply 20April 22, 2021 4:20 PM

R18 there is no more bail in NY for 90% of criminals. Will that have an impact on jewelry wearing? Or change the message that the wearer is a potential violent felon who can make bail?

by Anonymousreply 21April 22, 2021 4:22 PM

R20. My apologies. Typo.

This doesn't look hawt?

by Anonymousreply 23April 22, 2021 4:26 PM

Fuck. Another error^ on my part. Too high to post I guess.

by Anonymousreply 24April 22, 2021 4:26 PM

What, R22, a random jewelry store website? No, not particularly.

I find the diamond crucifixes very funny. I'm sure Jesus would have approved.

by Anonymousreply 25April 22, 2021 4:27 PM

I wear cuff links and an Apple Watch, although I have a lot of pieces I got when I was younger that I don’t wear anymore. I’ve collected watches and have about 300, which I unfortunately don’t wear anymore.

by Anonymousreply 26April 22, 2021 4:27 PM

I used to wear my grandfather's watch, R26, but only for practical reasons - it told the time. I thought it was clunky and ugly, so when I realized cell phones served the purpose I got rid of it.

by Anonymousreply 27April 22, 2021 4:29 PM

I don't wear jewelry, but you be you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 28April 22, 2021 4:32 PM

I’ve loved it since I started making money (40 years ago.) I’m able to now have pieces custom designed. Unfortunately for me, I’m only into gold (it just looks better with my skin tone.) I currently have about 20 rings with various gemstones, mostly diamonds and emeralds. I also wear chains on occasion and have several gold ones. My favorite pieces are my custom gold bracelets, but I also own almost everything David Yurman has designed. I have never gotten into earrings, but I do have the gold nipple rings, which are a standout because most men wear silver. And to top it off I do have two different (a black and a brown) custom-designed belts with intricate buckles. I lovingly call my jewels my “children” as thankfully I had no real live ones!

by Anonymousreply 29April 22, 2021 4:35 PM

R10– I agree! I hate to see men draped with necklaces, bracelets, etc.. looks trashy.

by Anonymousreply 30April 22, 2021 4:35 PM

Rings on my fingers, bells on my toes

by Anonymousreply 31April 22, 2021 4:37 PM

Elizabeth used to play with her jewels.

by Anonymousreply 32April 22, 2021 4:45 PM

You be you R29 but I can't help but think the night nurse or mortician is going to end up with your precious jewels...

by Anonymousreply 33April 22, 2021 4:47 PM

I was hoping R32 was referring to Queen Elizabeth sorting through her jewelry, murmuring, “Not so fast, Von Ryan!”

by Anonymousreply 34April 22, 2021 4:49 PM

Some of you must be big queens if you worry about looking fem in jewelry.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 35April 22, 2021 5:03 PM

No, R35, I think we worry about looking like a douchebag, which is what the model in those photos looks like.

by Anonymousreply 36April 22, 2021 5:04 PM

You MARYs wouldn’t think twice about some guy’s ugly jewelry if he were hot, hung and willing to have sex with you. And who said jewelry on men is just a step up from tattoos? How boring and sheltered you must be! Are you single, too? I can’t imagine the type of über-masc men with perfect skin and NO jewelry whatsoever that you require just to speak to you without your judgmental, dickish notions of acceptability coming to the forefront. Do you only date clones of yourself? Do you keep that stick firmly lodged up your ass at all times or do you remove it for periodic stick maintenance? Maybe you should move to North Korea, I hear they’re real sticklers for wearing only approved forms of dress and hairstyles.

by Anonymousreply 37April 22, 2021 5:05 PM

R37, if you lived it, you’d know they lose the shit all the time and then create quests to find it.

If you’re hanging out with anyone new and something goes missing, there’s always the unspoken “he steals!” Bullshit from an absent-minded/melodromatic asshat.

So, yeah, I prefer people who keep their jewelry discrete, on at all times, and out of my sphere of concern.

by Anonymousreply 38April 22, 2021 5:13 PM

R37, sorry to have touched a nerve. Jewelry is worn to send a message. I don't happen to care for the message. And "hot, hung and willing to have sex with me" is so far down my list of things that make someone worth my time that it doesn't even register. I created the thread about never having once had a date and I'm perfectly happy with it. Make a move on me - and I walk away.

I like ankle bracelets with bells on them so I can hear them coming.

by Anonymousreply 42April 22, 2021 5:25 PM

An expensive watch sends a message.

by Anonymousreply 45April 22, 2021 5:28 PM

Actually, R41, it can be any combination of numerous messages. Choose your favorite!

I'm rich

I'm vulgar

I'm materialistic

I'm "creative"

I'm a "free spirit"

I am easily distracted by shiny objects

I like the idea of being able to flee the country with tangible assets should the need arise

I am one thousand years old

Muh Daddy gave this to me as muh chastity pledge!!!

I so adore quaint brown people I load myself up with their religious totemic objects regardless of their actual traditional use

I believe in auras and other healing bullshit

I am Marilyn Monroe

Obviously the last such message was the only acceptable one and is unlikely these days to be true.

by Anonymousreply 46April 22, 2021 5:29 PM

^^ r46's message "I'm poor."

by Anonymousreply 47April 22, 2021 5:32 PM

Honestly, R43, I feel I have a normal sex drive and definitely identify as a gay man. But after years of not being interested in the people who were interested in me and never having the people I was interested in being interested back, I gave up. Now I realize that the single lifestyle suits me better than coupledom could. I know a lot of gay and straight couples and I'm very pleased that so many of them make it work and are great people, but as for me? Five minutes with my favorite nude photograph and I'm good.

Now when people make sexual overtures to me I excuse myself. Too old at 48 for the drama. I dare say telling them "hey, this is my first time!" would be welcome information. And for what? Most of what passes for sexy I just find crass, ugly and unappealing.

Sort of like jewelry.

by Anonymousreply 48April 22, 2021 5:35 PM

I don’t think r46 is poor; I think he’s The Accountant.

by Anonymousreply 49April 22, 2021 5:37 PM

Of course! If jewelry is good enough for the maharajas it's good enough for the gays.

R47, I'm doing quite well, thanks. But, no, I'm not rich, and don't really see the need for it. I own my own home, it's furnished the way I like it, have a car that I like driving, a favorite tailor and don't have to worry about bills or medical expenses. I have some charities and school funding that I donate to. What else is there to spend money on? I buy a lot of books, true, but I don't collect rare editions. I want to read them, not admire them through a vitrine.

by Anonymousreply 53April 22, 2021 5:40 PM

When my mom died, I’d hoped pearl necklaces would make a comeback for men - she had a wide assortment and I happened to like one set with an amethyst clasp. I let the brothers with daughters have them.

by Anonymousreply 54April 22, 2021 5:41 PM

R49, Ha! Not quite, but it fits my personality.

I love a caftan/dangly jewelry look on an older distinguished gay man. It just portrays a man who’s content, settled, and living a pleasurable life.

by Anonymousreply 58April 22, 2021 5:44 PM

R35 no one cares about "looking fem" - that's a big stretch. Most normal guys just don't want to look like clowns or douchebags.

by Anonymousreply 59April 22, 2021 5:46 PM

R48 - thanks for answering my questions. You actually seem very classy, well-mannered, and unbothered. Maybe with a touch of “diva,” but I love it. So happy for you that you’re self-actualized.

by Anonymousreply 60April 22, 2021 5:48 PM

For people my age (mid-30s) gay or straight, male jewelry has a huge stigma attached to it as a 70s and 80s guido thing, up there with cologne and shirts unbuttoned to the navel.

Although many of us (again, gay and straight) can be found with Fitbits, Whoops and other fitness trackers on the right wrist and Apple Watches on the left.

by Anonymousreply 61April 22, 2021 5:49 PM

R60 - you're welcome! And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't occasionally lonely or didn't look at a young couple and wish I'd had their experiences - but in the long run it's worked out for me and I think I've avoided a lot of emotional pain (and worse) that would otherwise have come my way.

Now back to hating on jewelry!

by Anonymousreply 62April 22, 2021 5:50 PM

In high school I used to wear those leather bracelets with cowrie shells because Gale Harold's character on QAF did (MARY! yes) and an assortment of silver rings, lip and nose rings and tongue piercings.

Now that I grew up. All I have are 2 watches. A Movado for formal events, and a G-Shock for everything else. I like it that way. It's a lot simpler.

I have cufflinks, collar pins and my college ring, and a half-dozen antique wristwatches, none of which I wear these days.

The only piece of jewelry I wear is my wedding ring.

I left it in his mailbox.

He was disgusting.

That’s the other problem with gifted jewelry - it is a claim upon the wearer.

by Anonymousreply 68April 22, 2021 6:08 PM

R68 - precisely. Which is why I gave back the ring. I never wanted him to be able to say he did anything for me.

I wear a rainbow bracelet. Representing is one step above presenting.

I do not, but that's sort of an outgrowth of my inability to wear anything that encircles, like a wristwatch, top-button collar, hats, etc. Just the thought of wearing a ring makes me short of breath, like I'm suffocating. Even paper hospital bracelets make me break out in a sweat.
