What’s the point of Rancho Mirage?
The most pointless place I have ever been. Other than being far from the beach and 120 degrees, how is it different from LA? Why not just rent a much closer house in Malibu, and enjoy a pool AND the beach?
Unlike what Napa is to San Francisco, oh what the Hamptons are to NY, Los Angeles and Rancho Mirage are both suburban car cities with access to tons of pools and nice weather. Rancho Mirage doesn’t seem worth the money. Is there even a ranch or a mirage?

What’s up with all the weird California real estate adjacent threads? By the way weird is Playa Vista, built on top of a methane field of Native American bodies in a drained wet marshlands that became Howard Hughes air field for a quarter of a century and is one big earthquake away from sliding into the sea like jello.

Not sure why OP would find a large elegant beautiful home on a golf course with water features, nestled at the base of mountains in a safe, gated community as distasteful.

Lived in NYC for 18 years and loved it but for many it would be too noisy, dirty, dangerous, crowded, expensive and the summers can be humid and the winters cold to each his own but I found Palm Springs a relaxing oasis that was clean, quiet, dry and except for the summer the weather was wonderful and my friends from LA still go there to relax get away from crowds and ride bikes and relax. It's very beautiful and the nights are wonderful.

R9 Been there and like Palm Springs it has the same beauty, climate, topography, relaxed pace and views of the San Jacinto Mountains peaked with snow November through May. Both are part of the Coachella Valley aka Palm Springs area. And like another thread What's the Point of Palm Springs the answers for that and Rancho Mirage would be the same.

R24 I've experienced both and since you aren't dripping sweat and becoming dehydrated dry heat is more comfortable and humidity can make you feel much hotter than the actual temperature. A dry 106 feels better than a balmy 91 degrees. And in the desert the temperature cools rapidly once the sun goes down while in Miami it can be a humid 82 at 2am.

PS: gay gay gay, old Hollywood neighborhood glam, The Movie Colony, the Mesa, mid century architecture
Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert: nasty, poor gays, meth, industrial, chain stores, car dealers
Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells: wealthy, high end shopping, Republican, deathly quiet after 8pm, large moldy garish homes.
La Quinta: wealthy retirees, The Madison Club, Hideaway, Traditions, new $ (Kartrashian) TV and movie money, close to Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport for private jets to land, a few nights at your mansion, golf and go home.

I'll take the dry heat of Palm Springs, even in the summer, to the hot and humid climate where I live. I can't even walk outside for 5 minutes without being soaked in sweat. Humid heat is a deal-breaker. Also, we get horrible thunderstorms with large hail, flooding and tornadoes. Florida is under threat from hurricanes half of the year, which can destroy your home. The Northeast has to deal with snow and ice for half the year. Palm Springs has none of that.

We're keeping our options open, R56.
We're even thinking of moving to NYC instead. We were considering Washington Heights, but people warned us against it. But they wouldn't say any more about what was wrong with the neighborhood, for whatever reason.

I live in Rancho Mirage and LOVE it. We're in a gated community that's about 1/4 gay. Eldergay, to be sure, but gay nonetheless, and these old queens throw some fantastic dinner parties.
Rancho does not have the problems with homelessness or raucous short-term rentals that have truly eroded the quality of life in Palm Springs, because RM has forbidden short-term rentals and it's not really a tourist town like PS is. However, if you really want to get your gay on, it's only an easy 20 minute drive to any of the bars on Arenas, or any other restaurant in Palm Springs.
We have fabulous views of snow-peaked mountains for half the year, but unlike PS, we're far enough away from them so that it doesn't affect our daylight hours. PS is nestled right at the base of Mt. San Jacinto and, in the wintertime, the mountain blocks sunshine at around 3pm. We get about 2 hours more sunshine.
RM is actually a fantastic place to live. Odd, though, to see it brought up for discussion on DL.
