Will the Republican party ever become "normal" again?

Assuming it was "normal" to start with... will we ever see a Right/Center Republican party again, or are they headed down this far-right direction that will either destroy them (which won't happen until they start losing elections) or destroy the country, which the previous POTUS was doing just by enabling the most extreme in the country.

I am of the opinion that we need two working political parties, not one whose sole mission is to "give it to the Libs" every chance they get. The fact that the Republicans are a minority party that has the majority of statehouses and legislatures, and was able to put 3 new judges on the Supreme Court continues to boggle my mind, considering how far right they have truly gone. This Red v Blue state has destroyed what was once an incredible country, and I think the political system started to erode with Clinton/Gore and the Gingrich Congress, despite them actually working together.

It's what gave us Rove's Red v Blue strategy, which ended up working for the GOP (and I think continues to work for them). And personally, I think Congress goes GOP in 2022, though I am still holding on to the hope that the Dems (either Biden or Harris) can keep the WH in 2024.

Thoughts?

I think there has to be something more interesting to think about.

by Anonymousreply 1April 18, 2021 9:33 PM

They will just be repackaged, like this country always does.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2021 9:36 PM

No! They are the party of idiocy, conspiracy theories and destruction. A very large cult, the likes of which the US has never seen. Their idol is a fat, lazy, narcissistic, belligerent, racist, racist, buffoon. They worship this thing 24/7 as though he were the second coming of Christ.

by Anonymousreply 3April 18, 2021 9:39 PM

The Biden wing is the center-right, the Harris wing is center-left. The Republican party is fascist and the woke wing is Maoist.

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2021 9:46 PM

We’re a right wing Christian nation. The Republican Party isn’t going anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 5April 18, 2021 11:18 PM

The scariest part about them is that they prove you only have to be white and a racist, gun-nut pos to win with them. Boebart only got her GED last year.

They don't believe in viruses and vaccines, but they'll vote for a complete imbecile for senator who doesn't know the fucking three branches of govt! That's like going to a doctor who doesn't know what a friggin' stethoscope is.

Some of you fools need to stop acting like anyone on the left resembles the far-right. Complete morons who know nothing about governing or legislation couldn't win as a Democrat. Ever. They have genuinely stupid, evil people on the right.

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2021 11:27 PM

[quote]We’re a right wing Christian nation. The Republican Party isn’t going anywhere.

No, we're not. That's why the GOP is going with voter laws. They can't actually win based on support. The Democrats in the Senate represent millions more people than the Republicans. The Dems have won 8 of 9 presidential elections by millions of votes.

The GOP is a party that can only win via gerrymandering, the EC, cheating and voter suppression.

Don't lie about their power.

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2021 11:29 PM

It won’t. It was the white establishment party. Now that demographics are changing, and every year things get worse for that establishment domination, they will become less conservative (in the sense of resisting change) and more radical (in the sense of overthrowing norms like the rule of law and the right to vote).

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2021 11:30 PM

no because the democrats are still desperately trying to get the far left vote

the extreme tds still present among the crowd here shows that they'd rather the far right to normies

no need to think about their politics or issues

just look for the d

and hold steadfast

no matter what amount of crazy comes out of their side because the other side is pure evil, eeeeeevvvvviiiiiiiilllllll and you must be a russian agent if you disagree. REeeeEEEeeEEEee prepare for a nwo of communist feminist bakeries made with all natural rad fem yeast

Unless the Democrats somehow manage to get a voting rights reform bill passed in Congress over the next 2 years, the Republicans really have no incentive to normalize, do they? The just need to wait until they retake Congress in less than 2 years and then bring Biden’s agenda to a halt until 2024. In the meantime, they can happily go about the work of making sure that poor people, religious minorities and people of color are put at an electoral disadvantage. And if somehow enough of them still manage to vote to re-elect Biden, then there may well be enough states by then who have passed laws to allow their Republican overlords to override the results.

The Democrats really need to recognize what is facing them. The Republicans are not normal any more, but power begets power. If the Dems don’t use theirs effectively, the Republicans will be increasingly extreme in taking it from them.

R9, now try that gibberish in English.

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2021 11:39 PM

r10 religious minorities? falung gong? sihks? bottoms?

r11 lacking a sense of humour will turn more to the right. just as the radical polarization between the two american parties will result in most people not giving a fuck and doing all they can to avoid it.

[quote]lacking a sense of humour will turn more to the right.

Well, there you are again, my non-American-born, Tucker ass-kissing friend.

Perhaps because you're new to America, you don't understand that this is who the GOP has been since the Civil Rights Act, since Lee Atwater, since Willie Horton, since Karl Rove used McCain's "black child" to get Dubya the nomination, since birtherism.

Donald J. Trump --probably the most ignorant pile of shit to ever run for office-- merely exposed what we already knew about anyone who votes GOP. "More" haven't turned to the right-wing. They were always there. The racism and the bigotry that was always there is merely out in the open. Trump wasn't some great orator. He merely said out loud what we all knew about the over-whelming majority of Republicans and why the party gravitated to him. So when you "threaten" me with this horseshit about how people will suddenly turn to the right-wing over whatever nonsense you tell yourself (like a millionaire British bitch with a history of being a racist bitch getting fired from a talk show), yet you never say that people will suddenly turn to voting Dem over a god damned insurrection based on lies or a violation of the Hatch Act or psychos with torches or a boycott of the NFL or a red cup at Starbucks or lying about a deadly virus or the myriad of hateful, scheming, bigoted, racist things Trump himself has said, done or attempted to legislate along with the GOP, then those people were already jonesing to be fascist trash.

by Anonymousreply 14April 18, 2021 11:57 PM

No. It needs to be destroyed and replaced. Or at least marginalized and split.

A third party MIGHT get some traction if it had a very charismatic leader. I'm kind of surprised Trump didn't start his own party to screw over the Republicans. I'm assuming they bribed him in some way. He could split the Republicans in half. On the plus side, it would have drawn most of the crazies into his party where they could be safely marginalized. Instead he's kind of claimed the Republicans for his own, which ensures their eventual destruction (or America's, if he or his cronies ever get in power again).

I'm wondering how old OP is.

The last Republican with any decency was Eisenhower. Then the party embraced Nixon, Reagan, the Bushes, and Trump. The theme of crooks and grifters isn't something that just appeared in the 21st Century - the GOP has been investing in it for a long time. Crooked and corrupt has been the Republican "normal" for over 50 years at least.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2021 3:52 AM

It used to be big gov this big gov that, taking away liberties, giving away welfare as nauseam. Now it’s all exposed as racism. That further move will be hard to get away from.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2021 8:55 AM

Why isn't OP's question interesting to think about R1?

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2021 9:02 AM

R16 I'm 53

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2021 8:01 PM

Going by their support of and reactions to the Jan. 6 domestic terrorist attack, I really don’t know what to think anymore.

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2021 8:09 PM

Tea Party, Magats, what next?

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2021 8:09 PM

Nazis, r21

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2021 8:18 PM

Nope. Upcoming numbers, attitudes, and demographics do not play in their favor.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2021 8:22 PM

I used to think, yeah they suck, but after 2016 it’s been different. I thought with all the GOP flag waving surely the conspiring or suspicion there of with the Russians would be a step too far for true American patriots. I also thought with all of their supposed family values they’d shun a known cheater as a nominee with a nude model for a wife, two divorces and children with three different women. But no, the evangelicals were all in. I thought they wouldn’t respect a rich man who won’t pay small business owners for the work they do for him. Wrong again. So the facade came off and showed the world who they Republicans really are. I was naive. Outright sedition and naked white supremacy are OK now. I don’t see how they put that horse back in the barn.

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2021 8:28 PM

America in its current form and under the current political configuration is unsustainable as a concept. It's like forcing Canada and Pakistan to coexist as a single political entity with a unified political system. In the long run, it doesn't work for anyone involved and cannot survive.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2021 8:34 PM

The old Republican party is the new Democratic party. The rightwing are more socialist than the Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2021 8:36 PM

Normal AGAIN? Doesn't that imply they once were?
