Sorry Charlotte Rae but Cloris Leachman in a crew cut was a big improvement.
The Beverly Ann years were The Facts of Life's best seasons

Could Cloris actually play the piano, as she appears to at the end of OP's credits?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 18, 2021 11:08 PM |
The frenetic '80s synth-pop gloss on the theme song was really, really special. Cloris should've worn a headband and some wacky geometric glasses to complete the effect.

One of the dumbest episodes of the Beverly Ann years was when Fabian and Bobby Rydell move in next door and they are all transported back to the early '60s. Badly acted and executed! *cringe*

Nancy McKeon was the dykiest lez on TV until Ellen Degenerate came along. I'm sure every baby lezzie dreamt of Jo carpet-munching them before sleep. Clitoris Leachman could never come close to Mrs G.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 19, 2021 10:21 AM |
This show never learned, they kept trying to add another girl. First Kako then the "princess" then the Jo knockoff, then finally Pippa because of the late 80's Australia boom. No one wanted them.

The Pippa storyline was so contrived. Aussie teenage girl runs away from home and somehow ends up all the way in upstate New York. Then her father somehow finds her there, but in the end he allows her to remain and returns back home alone.

R17 couldn't be more wrong. That was one of the best episodes of the entire series, let alone the Beverly Ann years. There was also the reunion with the season 1 girls, The Facts of Life Down Under movie, the 10 Little Indians episode and Stacey Q as Cinnamon.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 19, 2021 1:04 PM |
I hate the reunion episode. Sue Ann was the same age as Blair. She would still be in college. Plus Jo knew all these girls. They had scenes together. Her acting like she doesn't know them was just lazy writing
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 19, 2021 1:28 PM |
R30 I binge-watched FACTS OF LIFE on Roku and couldn't understand why Jo didn't remember the girls, and vice-versa. They all had several scenes together with Jo in Season 2. I suppose the audiences in 1986 wouldn't have remembered because there was not yet TV on video/DVD; you could only catch old episodes in reruns that was out of your control.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 19, 2021 1:43 PM |
OP is clearly on drugs. Wasn't there a "very special ep" about that on 'FoL' or I'm interchanging 80s sitcoms.
The only good thing about the Beverly Ann years was Mackenzie Astin, who was only a few years older than me. I had a huge crush on him...forget George Clooney as George.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 19, 2021 2:45 PM |
I don't think it's so much lazy writing. Chances are the person who wrote the episode in 1986 was not working on the show in 1980 and was probably just told by producers "these girls were only on the first season." Therefore it would make sense to them that Jo wouldn't know them.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 19, 2021 2:48 PM |
Paul Haggis actually wrote a good many of the Beverly Ann-era eps. This was well before 'Crash' and the sexual harassment allegations. Hopefully he didn't harass the girls...or Nancy McKeon!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 19, 2021 2:56 PM |
R37 McKeon was known to have labia of steel. She woulda crushed Haggis or any man with the power of her lips which were like the jaws of life. Ready to snap a man in half.

R20 It was cerebral palsy and her name was cousin Geri ('80-84). You will need this information to enter gay Heaven.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 19, 2021 3:29 PM |
Everyone knows the best seasons starred my future husband, MacKenzie Astin.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 19, 2021 3:38 PM |
Cousin Geri was played by Geri Jewell. She was a stand-up comedienne, and after Norman Lear saw her act, and he wanted to add her to his show. There weren't many people with disabilities on TV at the time, so her appearance on the show would be cutting-edge in a way, and the show could educate people about her disability. Maybe if viewers got used to regularly watching a character with a disability, then they would be less awkward in real life when they met a person with a disability. Norman Lear was ahead of his time in promoting diversity and inclusiveness.
People laugh at the 80s sitcom's "very special episodes", but they were actually learning tools. Experiential learning can be triggered through literature (including TV shows). Viewers are sympathetic to characters they watch every week, and as the characters suffer through problems, the viewers suffer right along with them. This show tacked homophobia (pilot episode), attempted sexual assault, suicide, prostitution; those were pretty heavy topics for a show where the cast and viewers were children and teenagers. From watching the show, 80s latchkey kids learned why they should avoid making certain mistakes.

R4 My sister and I HATED her! We used her name as short hand to skip a weak episode of any show.

I remember Tracey Ullman on Letterman. Circa 1986. She said "Have you seen Facts of Life this year David? Those girls have gotten so huge! They're gonna crash through the celling!"

Lear's Embassy Studios also produced 'Silver Spoons', hence the ep where Ricky Schroder dressed up like a girl and was slut-shamed by his friend Derek (played by DL fave Jason Bateman). Always ahead of his time, ol' Norman was...attempting to get audiences used to non-binary children all the way back in 1983!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 19, 2021 4:08 PM |
R47 O please. The 80s were the decade of the tranny. In movies, in TV shows, in music. Men dressing like women, and women like men was no big deal. Norman did nothing unusual. Motley Crue were one of the first to bring mainstream drag into music but after them everyone was doing it.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 19, 2021 4:12 PM |
R22 obviously didn't watch the episode. Mrs. Garrett did let Tootie see Jermaine Jackson. That's when she finally learned she was nothing special.

Chloris was livid that "Fatalie" as she called Mindy's character, got to lose her virginity. She thought her character should've been the one.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 20, 2021 6:15 PM |
I’ve been watching Season 1. Surprisingly, Molly Ringwald was the weakest link, and that’s saying a lot. Terrible child actress with none of the charisma she had in the John Hughes films.
I wish they had kept John Lawlor who played the befuddled headmaster. But as far as the girls they got rid of all the right girls.

^ That's great R70.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 29, 2021 2:11 PM |
R31, at the beginning of the reunion episode, Tootie greets the lost S1 girls along with Blair and Natalie, and says "You remember Jo!" The S1 girls do remember her, wave noncommittally, and then go off to catch up with the girls they're more familiar with. Jo is an outsider not so much because she doesn't know the S1 girls at all, but because Tootie, Blair, and Natalie have a much longer history with them.
I thought it was interesting that Felice Schachter, who was given almost nothing to do when she was a series regular, had one of the biggest storylines in the reunion as a pregnant bride-to-be (fade-to-commercial level scandalous at the time). Julie Piekarski also had a few good scenes, while Julie Anne Haddock was sidelined again.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 29, 2021 4:07 PM |
Interesting that Lisa didn’t skip the reunion episode because of that R72. She skipped Natalie losing her virginity episode because it promoted pre marital sex.

by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 29, 2021 4:30 PM |
Felice Schachter had crazy eyes. I thought I read somewhere that she was also a Trump supporter but I could be wrong. Mindy called her a “soulmate” in one of the behind-the-scenes specials so it appears they remained good friends. Kim Fields also remained close with Julie Piekarski.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 29, 2021 4:45 PM |
The show more or less stopped doing the "very special episodes" and became more of a wacky 80s sitcom from 1985-1988
It was also very Golden Girls influenced those later seasons

I guess as a fuck you to Molly Ringwald for not doing the reunion show was just saying that Molly was busy. They didn't even bother giving the audience an idea of what she was doing now. I always thought they should've said she was a movie star, which could've affected Tootie, who was struggling to be a Broadway star.

I just watched the series finale episodes today on LOGO where they tried to spin off Blair as the new headmaster of Eastland with a new gaggle of girls (and boys.) It could have worked - they had a good cast - but the concept was pretty tired by that point and the coed kids made it feel more like Saved By The Bell than The Facts of Life. Lisa Whelchel was really gorgeous those final years.

[quote] In a Huffington Post article, Mindy Cohn lamented that she could not audition for Saint Elmo's Fire while she was on Facts of Life in 1985 because NBC would not let her out of her contract. She was up for Wendy Beamish, the role that went to Mare Winningham. She said she missed out on many opportunities because of Facts of Life's rigorous schedule for nine years.

I think IMDB had her making 40k an episode around the 4th or 5th season of FOL. Some people don't even make that in a year still. That alone could've kept her comfortable, but then there's the money from syndication and she's done a lot of voiceover work over the years. Chips Ahoy, vibrators and Indigo Girls tickets are pretty low overhead.

As for lazy writing, I've always thought the continuity on FOL to be pretty strong. And as for the residual issue as it pertains to Mindy-Lisa Welchel has already tweeted a residual check from FoL as well as the envelope it came in. The postage was more than the residual check.

I'm really trying to think of an episode I would consider a classic from the Beverly Ann years and I can't think of any besides, maybe, the episode where Andy loses Blair's sister and brings home Kay Como. There are some strong episodes in the "Over our Heads" years, (Doo-wah, George's HS reunion, Little Chill), but, other than LC, none that seem essential.

Mindy seems to have amassed a lot of good showbiz connections from her years in Hollywood. Her best friend is Helen Hunt. There are pics of them on Mindy's instagram page eating dinner at each others houses from time to time.
She went on the road with Belinda Carlisle right after she wrapped up FOL. She was good friends with Johnny Depp in the late 80's, early 90's as well.
She's also goodmother to a couple of Angelina Jolie's kids.

Tootie was cute in the early seasons and fucking annoying in the later seasons.

Molly Ringwald revealed she was originally supposed to be one of the four girls carried over to Season 2...then they hired Nancy McKeon. If that had happened I wonder who John Hughes’ “it” girl would have been...
In Plead The Fifth, she also admits that Mindy Cohn wasn’t very nice to her originally. But then they ran into each other years later and she was fine.
At least she didn’t pretend to forget their names.

R126 maybe not so surprising about Mindy, considering the people she considers her “besties.”

I'm the complete opposite...I prefer the Mrs. Garrett years. The show was never quite the same without her, and those last couple seasons were hit or miss overall. I think the strongest years were season 2 through 6.
