I love deviled ham. It’s easily the most underrated sandwich spread.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 18, 2021 2:54 PM |
Why is it called 'deviled' ham? Also, 'deviled' eggs? What's the devil got to do with it?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 18, 2021 3:16 PM |
The term "devilled" means that the food has had spice and/or vinegar added, so the flavor is sharp rather than bland.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 18, 2021 4:03 PM |
I was going to make a Colton Underwood deviled something joke, but he's so bland he can't be deviled.

R9 I agree! I've often questioned some posts on DL and received honest answers (among the snarky ones!) so we do have some helpful sweethearts like R5 out there.

Is deviled ham different from ham salad? I love ham salad on raisin toast.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 18, 2021 4:30 PM |
When I was a little kid my mother would make me a 😈 ham sandwich 🥪 with French’s mustard on white bread.
I loved 🥰 it.

Devilled ham and sweet pickle relish on white bread make a good sandwich.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 18, 2021 4:41 PM |
Oscar Mayer had a 'Sandwich Spread' in a tube that was a deviled ham knockoff. It had pickle relish in it.

A sandwich plain on white bread, with Lay's potato chips. Comfort meal, like what mom used to pack me for school field trips.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 18, 2021 4:57 PM |
Oh yes, any sandwich that includes potato chips is wonderful!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 18, 2021 4:58 PM |
I like deviled ham with lots of mayonnaise or cream cheese. I never thought of using raisin bread but that sounds good.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 18, 2021 5:25 PM |
I haven't had it in years.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 18, 2021 5:26 PM |
I happen to have done raisin bread around do maybe I'll pick up a can of deviled ham? Is adding jam/jelly a joke?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 18, 2021 5:31 PM |
R20 No joke. Ham (in any form) and jelly are a great combo.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 18, 2021 5:44 PM |
Guilty pleasure food. On white bread with mayonnaise...sorry, not sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 18, 2021 5:53 PM |
I used to make hors d'oeuvres by spreading Pepperidge Farm white bread with Gulden's mustard, Underwood Deviled Ham, and cheddar cheese under the broiler. When the cheese melted, I'd give it another minute, take it out, and cut it in quarters. Good eatin' when I was 10.

Isn’t Carrie Underwood vegetarian? Lol
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 18, 2021 6:28 PM |
I'm not being snarky: does nobody care that this item has sodium nitrate in it?
Don't make me tell you what s n leads to.
I wonder if some brand makes deviled ham that doesn't have poison in it.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 18, 2021 6:31 PM |
My grandparents had cans of the Underwood deviled ham in their pantry. I tried it at their house.
I don't know if I could eat just the Underwood ham in a sandwich.
Idea: use the Underwood ham as a condiment spread, like pate in a Vietnamese sandwich. I think that would be delicious.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 18, 2021 6:33 PM |
My mom used to make tuna roll-ups per the link and we liked them. I don't remember whose idea it was to spread the biscuit dough with deviled ham instead of tuna, but it was pretty good too.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 18, 2021 6:49 PM |
I tried it for the first time a few months ago. I'd like it better with less sodium. Way too salty.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 18, 2021 6:49 PM |
I never liked deviled ham but I loved Armour potted meat and Vienna sausages.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 18, 2021 7:22 PM |
R29- You don't know what SALTY is until you've eaten CORNED BEEF HASH.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 18, 2021 7:23 PM |
R29- I had a friend over my house a week ago who brought his own frozen pizza with him. After he baked it in my oven he asked for my Stop and Shop container of salt and sprinkled a GENEROUS amount over his pizza. Frozen pizza has a TON of salt in it already.
YUCK
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 18, 2021 7:25 PM |
I'd consider Everything But The Bagel seasoning on pizza.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 18, 2021 7:27 PM |
R4, maybe you've heard of Google?
But to add to R5, in practical terms "deviled" means to make something hot and spicy, and in American cookery that meant mustard (prepared and/or ground) and black and/or red pepper.
Hawt.
It is NOT an antonym for "bland." Please.

R39- Jason Wingreen was an actor who played the bartender on Archie Bunker's Place. He worked with Andy Griffith and he heard him say the N word NUMEROUS times when he worked with him on some show.

r31, I've had corned beef hash that was less salty than Underwood.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 18, 2021 8:41 PM |
Corned beef hash is not one, single item. To say that it's "too salty" doesn't make sense unless you're naming a brand of corned beef hash, e.g., Libby's or Hormel.
Most people make homemade corned beef hash & don't need to oversalt it.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 18, 2021 8:48 PM |
I was referring to Hormel Corned Beef Hash not homemade.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 18, 2021 9:04 PM |
I never heard of eating this with jelly. Yuck.
I bought a can of this a while ago because my mom used to make me a snadwich of it. It was ok. I'm not used to process fooods any more. Mom also used to make me crabmeat sandwiches. They were pretty good (canned crabmeant and mayo).

R37, which is why he always uttered “good cracker” at the end of the commercial.

When I was a very small child this was one of my favorite things to eat. My mother would spread it on two slices of white bread, cut it in half, and I’d gobble it up. This would have been the mid-70’s.
I’ve tried it off and on since then. The 80’s, the 90’s. I wasn’t sure if it was changing or my taste buds were.
NOW? I’m 50. I tried it last year, same can and everything. and I swear it’s quite different. Not great. I think they removed all the saturated fat.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 22, 2021 1:53 PM |
R51 R52 I agree, it’s not the same as it was in the past (way in the past... I ate it in the 70s as a kid too). I’m curious to try those simple homemade recipes in the link to see if I can recreate it.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 22, 2021 1:56 PM |
R52 That’s sad to hear. It used to ooze with fat when you first opened up the can, yum yum. Why would they bother changing it, are they trying to market underwood deviled ham as a healthy choice? Anyway yes it was always best on white bread, preferably the old Wonder Bread.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 22, 2021 2:21 PM |
It’s the same with Libby’s canned Vienna sausages and Van Camp’s canned pork n’ beans.
They aren’t the same. They removed a lot of the saturated fat and replaced it with some sort of corn syrup concoction.
And don’t get me started on canned fruit cocktail!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 22, 2021 2:22 PM |
Pigs aren't as fat as they used to be. Seen a pork chop with all the fat like in the 70s lately?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 22, 2021 2:28 PM |
Sometime in the 80’s saturated fats got a really bad wrap publicly. Simultaneously, corn syrup started getting aggressively marketed as an ingredient for manufacturers. It was around that time many made the switch in ingredients.
Now, saturated fats aren’t considered as bad and sugar (is in EVERYTHING now in the form of corn syrup) which is carbs, is the culprit.
And capitalism and the free market marches on!
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 22, 2021 2:29 PM |
I think a lot of people just continue buying brands and products they loved in the past, without realizing how much they’ve subtly changed for the worse over the years.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 22, 2021 2:36 PM |
[quote]I'm not being snarky: does nobody care that this item has sodium nitrate in it?
Not particularly, no. It's what makes it able to keep in a can, and one makes a measured choice whether or not to subject one's self to it by eating it.
What I cared about was the tiny flecks of bone or tooth enamel I occasionally encountered in deviled ham, which is why I stopped eating it back in the 1980s.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | April 22, 2021 2:41 PM |
Remember the oat bran craze?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 22, 2021 2:41 PM |
My mom once made sandwiches that were devilled ham with some mayo spread on one slice, hard boiled egg yolks with some mustard spread on the second slice, and thin cucumber slices in the middle. It was great and she would never make it again, no idea why.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 22, 2021 2:43 PM |
Speaking of foods that have changed, the other day I realized I haven't had a can of mixed nuts taste like they used to in a very long time. They're dryer and bland these days, and I think the mix of nuts have changed as well.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 22, 2021 2:45 PM |
A lot of Southern Baptists and other pentecostal / evangelical types won't sty deviled eggs...they call them stuffed or dressed eggs. We wouldn't want to summon up Satan at the pot luck, would we?

Lance’s packaged cracker sandwiches six to a pack (like cheese, peanut butter, or sour cream and chives) have definitely changed. They used to be a little greasy, and now there’s like a weird sweet salty oil covering them. It’s noticeably sweet when you lick it. No good!
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 22, 2021 5:00 PM |
Name brand peanut butter is another one that over the decades switched from a slight oily texture to more corn syrup. The cheap generic brands are even worse, often corn syrup is the second listed ingredient. You have to get the more expensive or all-natural brands to get the good stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 22, 2021 5:02 PM |
I used to eat the Underwood brand ham & chicken on Ritz crackers, really good. I preferred the chicken though. I haven’t seen or had these in ages.

R68, what saddens me about Lances crackers is that they discontinued Rye Chee, the cream cheese rye cracker. They were my favorite of the Lances products.
I can't even find a pic of them online; it's like they never existed.

I can only remember having it once or twice as a kid. Four year old me also loved the little devil character on the package.
I'd try it again, but as an adult I don't trust any ground meats - who knows what cost-cutting corporations put in them. Too many gross possibilities.

I've never had the Eucharist, R73, since I have never so much as darkened the door of a Catholic church, ever. I should imagine there's no comparison between them and savory rye crackers with cream cheese, though.
I don't believe in 'sins,' and I think you're just projecting onto me your guilt over your own.

When I was a kid in the 70s, a deviled ham sandwich, some Lays potato chips, and a glass of Kool -Aid was a damn fine lunch.
I wouldn’t eat any of that now. Well, maybe the chips, but last time I did have some they didn’t taste like I remembered.
