Superman actor Christopher Reeve was bisexual?

Makes me like him even more...

by Anonymousreply 265April 25, 2021 1:53 PM

Don't look at me. I kept my eyes open when I had to kiss him and my lips sealed shut even though Chris wanted tongue.

by Anonymousreply 1April 18, 2021 6:53 AM

Well, if he had a fling with the guy on the right of the picture, that's a clear affirmation of Freud's theory that homosexuality is a manifestation of narcissism.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2021 10:41 AM

OK: which one of you wanton whores wrote the review on Amazon of Culver’s biography with the sentence: “A searing emotional account of an artisan”?

Not surprising at all, actually

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2021 11:05 AM

Delicious to imagine BUT caveat emptor: "Culver makes his claim from the grave in the just published book Hollywood Babylon Strikes Again!: More Exhibitions! More Sex! More Sin! More Scandals Unfit to Print by co-authors Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince."

Darwin Porter - notorious show biz fantasist and liar.

Do I think that Reeve could have/would have experimented in the pre-AIDS 70's - yes. Do I think he was gay? No, he chose women for most of his life.

by Anonymousreply 5April 18, 2021 11:30 AM

That article is 11 years old. If the claim were true oh, other people would have come out by now.

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2021 11:36 AM

Remember the "Men on Film" bit on In Living Color? They used the poster behind them to make a statement - I knew this from the first time I saw it - spilling tea.

I met Reeve in the 1980's. He pinged to high heaven. Gay rumors swirled around him from the earliest moments of his career. There would have been no career had he not been firmly closeted.

by Anonymousreply 10April 18, 2021 11:46 AM

Okay - last one, I promise - haha. Take a quick look at this clip. They were using the poster to tell the public of some of the men in Hollywood and their true sexual identities. We see Christopher Reeve, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, is that Carl Weathers from Rocky? Others....

David Allen Grier is huge in the "structural racism" con / movement. Someone should call him out on this homophobia.

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2021 12:50 PM

Don't doubt for a moment. Most actors have no idea of themselves and are obsessed with self-examination. I can think of no one worse to become involved with, outside of thieves and murders, and other scum, with which they used to be classed.

by Anonymousreply 13April 18, 2021 2:36 PM

I actually went home with him in the 1980s. We ended up talking all night rather than having sex. I think he was one of those guys who was trying to compensate more for having a lousy relationship with his father than actually being gay. He certainly had sex with men, but don't think he was gay in the sense of an identity.

by Anonymousreply 14April 18, 2021 2:40 PM

He was such a classically handsome guy. Gorgeous in the original Superman - not one guy since has been nearly as stunning, not even Cavill.

by Anonymousreply 15April 18, 2021 2:44 PM

He was gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 16April 18, 2021 2:46 PM

And to think he said it would be our little secret.

by Anonymousreply 17April 18, 2021 3:00 PM

Apparently been more gorgeous in real life. Yes, gay was an industry secret.

by Anonymousreply 18April 18, 2021 4:11 PM

[quote]I can think of no one worse to become involved with, outside of thieves and murders, and other scum

You've just described the Republican Party.

by Anonymousreply 19April 18, 2021 10:38 PM

You have got to be kidding. Cavill is much better looking than Reeves.

by Anonymousreply 20April 18, 2021 11:20 PM

Oh BFD. What's a little orgasm? As the kids say nowadays: I'm non-binary, I'm pansexual, I don't like labels. Bisexual? How quaint.

by Anonymousreply 21April 18, 2021 11:29 PM

I was about 7 years old when the first Superman with Reeve hit the movies. Was very excited to see the movie. Opening scene (or close to opening) was Christopher Reeve close-up, flying in his suit and cape with his blue eyes blazing the screen. I heard the “gay gasp” from somewhere in the audience. Definitely a man gasping. My Mom sort of snickered to herself. I had an early reckoning that some men found other men attractive. I joined in the fun about a decade later. Upon recollection, one of my first sentient experiences with the concept of homosexuality — although not comprehended at that moment.

by Anonymousreply 22April 18, 2021 11:30 PM

^ Later in life I read a GQ magazine article about him (yeah, I know, I was figuring it all out) about how he still wore a belt he made in Boy Scouts fashioned out of a standard fork and a belt strap. I always remembered that.

by Anonymousreply 23April 18, 2021 11:32 PM

I called an escort once. I was super lonely. It was more about being held, Whatever.

We got to talking and he gave me the name of two mainstream celebs, one now dead; one still alive, whom he knew to be gay.

Naive, I said: no way! They're married -- to women!

The guy shrugs: Well...what can I say. They like dick.

by Anonymousreply 24April 18, 2021 11:47 PM

OMG! my first crush at 8 years old - Superman 1 in 1978. I still find him the most beautiful man on screen all these years later. I only heard about him with women (2 women), but if he was bi or gay/closeted - great to hear!! I love the stories above btw and so envious of those of you who met him.

by Anonymousreply 25April 18, 2021 11:49 PM

Agree with R15. Chris was STUNNING in the original Superman. Perfect body, handsome face, great smile, those blue yes, a great bulge... Even his hair was perfect.

[quote] You have got to be kidding. Cavill is much better looking than Reeves.

No. Every other man who has played Superman on the big screen or small has paled in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 26April 18, 2021 11:56 PM

Wonder why Clint Walker of Cheyenne was never tapped to play Superman. From head to toe, he was the perfect physical embodiment of the DC comics version of the character.

Christopher Reeve was NOT bisexual

he was

GAYsexual

by Anonymousreply 28April 19, 2021 12:04 AM

Robert Conrad would have made a fantastic Superman.

by Anonymousreply 29April 19, 2021 1:48 AM

Robert Conrad claimed to be 5'8" tall. So he was probably even shorter.

No way suitable for Superman.

by Anonymousreply 30April 19, 2021 1:52 AM

Was he faster than a speeding train?

by Anonymousreply 31April 19, 2021 2:04 AM

He had gay voice and a tragic nose job. Not much ass. Then he died.

by Anonymousreply 32April 19, 2021 2:10 AM

There was only one Superman...George Reeves.

by Anonymousreply 33April 19, 2021 2:12 AM

Christopher Reeves cruised me HARD coming out of a men's room back in the day.

Wish I'd had better ho reflexes back then. Too stunned to respond.

by Anonymousreply 34April 19, 2021 2:55 AM

I watched a scene from Somewhere in Time on tv years ago. Christopher Reeve's character was walking around in his apartment. I thought- he walks like a FAIRY.

by Anonymousreply 35April 19, 2021 3:09 AM

R34, and then you woke up...

by Anonymousreply 36April 19, 2021 3:52 AM

I remember Howard Stern having a guest on his TV show who had an incredibly long penis and I think was a male escort. Howard asked if he had any celebrity clients. He said yes one but wouldn't say the name. He eventually admitted to the initials C.R.

Robin guested Christopher Reeve? The guy wouldn't confirm or deny. This was before Reeve's accident.

by Anonymousreply 37April 19, 2021 3:55 AM

Christopher's Superman turned me gay!

by Anonymousreply 38April 19, 2021 4:03 AM

LOL...it's always funny when people are SHOCKED over any allegation about an actor being sexually fluid.

I mean, have you not been around actors?

FLUID!!!! 99.9% of them!!!!

by Anonymousreply 39April 19, 2021 4:06 AM

He was a really rotten husband to his first wife. Openly cheating and out carousing while she was at home with the kids.

G said in a recent podcast that during Garp he was always around on weekends when he and Robin would go off and be "bad boys."

by Anonymousreply 40April 19, 2021 4:09 AM

He wasn't. Bisexuality isn't a thing.

by Anonymousreply 41April 19, 2021 4:17 AM

I never planned to reveal this. I fucked Christopher Reeve in his ASS off the edge of the pool for one whole summer. He was cold inside.

by Anonymousreply 42April 19, 2021 4:18 AM

I should clarify. Of course bisexuality is a thing - there are certainly people who are attracted to and get off on sex with men AND women.

But, it's bullshit. Unless a person can only get aroused sexually with BOTH males and females at the same time, I'm hesitant to call them "bisexual". A more accurate description would be "gay and straight." Why do you think so many women have problems with "bisexual" men. Yes, they know that they can have sex with them and get them off, but they're also freaked out by the fact that they can be perfectly content with JUST a guy.

Bisexuality is always used as this "I'm not straight but not gay" midpoint, when in reality the person is COMPLETELY gay or straight at the point when they're having sex with just a man or just a woman.

by Anonymousreply 43April 19, 2021 4:29 AM

[quote][R34], and then you woke up...

I am uncertain of so many things in the world, but the one area where I've never known doubt is knowing when I'm being cruised. And it was Reeves.

by Anonymousreply 44April 19, 2021 4:31 AM

R44: Start by getting his last right, at least.

by Anonymousreply 45April 19, 2021 5:08 AM

George Reeves

Christopher Reeve

Not spelled the same.

by Anonymousreply 46April 19, 2021 5:10 AM

R40, He wasn't married to Gae Exton. They were in a LTR and had 2 children together. However, he did screw their nanny (Dana) and went on to marry her.

by Anonymousreply 47April 19, 2021 5:17 AM

Bisexuals.

A fahncy word for....

Sluts.

by Anonymousreply 48April 19, 2021 5:17 AM

R37, I remember that broadcast. Howard's first guess was Chris Rock.

by Anonymousreply 49April 19, 2021 5:28 AM

R47, And then Dana, a non-smoker, died of lung cancer not long after Chris died.

Their son Will is now one of the hunks in the ABC News stable.

by Anonymousreply 50April 19, 2021 5:30 AM

Elder gays will remember Christopher Reeve from the soap "Search for Tomorrow".

by Anonymousreply 51April 19, 2021 5:32 AM

[quote]Christopher Reeves cruised me HARD coming out of a men's room back in the day. Wish I'd had better ho reflexes back then. Too stunned to respond.

I had the exact same experience one late night in a Haagen Dazs on Columbus Avenue.

by Anonymousreply 52April 19, 2021 6:25 AM

Christopher Reece was on “Love of Life,” not “Search for Tomorrow.”

by Anonymousreply 53April 19, 2021 6:34 AM

Wasn't there a rumor about Christopher being roomates with Robin Williams and being more than just roommates?

by Anonymousreply 54April 19, 2021 10:53 AM

This is old news…

by Anonymousreply 55April 19, 2021 11:11 AM

To R34 and R52, let me add that back in the late 70s Reeve also cruised me one night on Columbus Avenue. Similarly, I was so stunned I didn't respond to his intense stare. But he was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 56April 19, 2021 11:58 AM

[quote]You have got to be kidding. Cavill is much better looking than Reeve.

[quote]No. Every other man who has played Superman on the big screen or small has paled in comparison.

Cavill was better looking in The Count of Monte Cristo and The Tudors. I'd rarely seen another human being who was as beautiful...can't even think of one right now. But then he let them turn him into a Michelin man, and now he's...attractive for a football player.

by Anonymousreply 57April 19, 2021 12:35 PM

He was homosexual until he became famous and then he became straight.

by Anonymousreply 58April 19, 2021 12:47 PM

Yup- not need to any of us still alive post 70s- Richard Gere too- he had affairs with two friends of mine. There are a few that I’m quite certain of- and these guys are among them.

Kate Winslet recently said there are several big male stars in the closet- I know Travolta is- but he’s such old news that I think she is speaking of younger stars.

by Anonymousreply 59April 19, 2021 12:59 PM

Not “news” above

by Anonymousreply 60April 19, 2021 1:00 PM

R57 Excuse me?

by Anonymousreply 61April 19, 2021 1:08 PM

What Cal Culvers doesn’t tell you is that they fucked AFTER the paralyzation!

And now you know the rest of the story. Good Day!

by Anonymousreply 62April 19, 2021 1:19 PM

R39 I've made that point on here so many times.

But many of the DL gold star gays can't fathom it -it's just beyond their experience and thus their comprehension.

I've had backstage roles across several parts of the industry and it's something I've experienced a few times. The very definition of fluid, because in a few months, when that experience is over, they are still with and still in love with their wives.

by Anonymousreply 63April 19, 2021 1:25 PM

[quote] Apparently been more gorgeous in real life.

He brought his kids to the grand opening of The Westchester, a mall in White Plains, NY in March,1995, which made sense since he lived in nearby Pound Ridge. I was doing sales training at one of the stores and looked up, and there he was. Very tall, very handsome. He seemed to be enjoying spending time with his kids. It was only two months later he had the accident which paralyzed him.

by Anonymousreply 64April 19, 2021 1:30 PM

R24 you can't leave us hanging!

by Anonymousreply 65April 19, 2021 1:38 PM

He didnt seem the type to cheat...

by Anonymousreply 66April 19, 2021 1:48 PM

....Especially when he used a mouthtube to move his hovermobile.

by Anonymousreply 67April 19, 2021 1:56 PM

^Any man that good looking was getting offers of sex all day long, anywhere and anytime. Let's not kid ourselves about the male sexual impulse.

by Anonymousreply 68April 19, 2021 1:56 PM

R11 really? In that case I hope it's true, I found every one of them attractive. Redford, not do much more. And Harrison Ford, always has a crush on him. Black guy too. I remember seeing him in short shorts on the beach (was it Rocky or another film?)

by Anonymousreply 69April 19, 2021 2:12 PM

[quote]Wonder why Clint Walker of Cheyenne was never tapped to play Superman. From head to toe, he was the perfect physical embodiment of the DC comics version of the character.

While Walker looked heroic enough as Superman, he couldn't pull off the "aw shucks" of Clark Kent. You have to be able to do both. It's actually one of the reasons Cavill doesn't make a good Superman.

For all the crap he got, Brandon Routh actually looked great as both Superman and played Clark very well. He definitely channeled Reeve playing Clark.

by Anonymousreply 70April 19, 2021 2:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 75April 19, 2021 2:48 PM

I was working a late job in the city back when A Matter of Gravity was playing at the Broadhurst I believe. I would walk through Times Square on my way back to the Port Authority. It was just about when the play was letting out and there was always a large crowd of people to watch Kate leave the stage door and go directly into her limo(My you are waiting to see me?) Sometimes I would wait with them and of course I'd always see Chris leave as well. Nobody noticed him and I never saw him asked for an autograph. Before Superman despite me noticing his extraordinary looks nobody else cared.

by Anonymousreply 76April 19, 2021 2:49 PM

Reeve was a skinny but gorgeous NY stage actor before Superman. I remember reading a People magazine article on how he bulked up for the role. He returned to the stage as a gay man in Fifth of July but the critics pretty much dismissed him but adored co star Swoosie Kurtz which caused backstage tension.

by Anonymousreply 78April 19, 2021 2:54 PM

[quote]I fucked Christopher Reeve in his ASS off the edge of the pool for one whole summer.

How did you both survive that long without sleep?

by Anonymousreply 79April 19, 2021 2:57 PM

R26- He NEVER had any sex appeal to me at all.

I went to see Superman with my parents in December 1978. We all enjoyed the movie. I was in Junior high school and I knew I was gay already but had NO attraction to SUPERMAN.

by Anonymousreply 80April 19, 2021 3:42 PM

Where is the PROOF? I need to see a photo of Mr. Reeve performing fellatio or getting sodomized. Of course it will be photo-shopped. Everyone knows Rock Hudson was the last gay man in Hollywood. People ,OK, Hello would have told us if this was not the case.

by Anonymousreply 81April 19, 2021 3:47 PM

Ok great. I'm now thinking of Reeve and Cavill hooking up on the sly in a time travel hoe-mance, "Somewhere in Time 2: Supermen Gone Blue". Thanks DL.

It doesn't matter if you were the star of Superman, or the lead actor in a Tidy Cat litter commercial, you're a bona fide homosexual.

by Anonymousreply 91April 19, 2021 4:13 PM

SHRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKK!

by Anonymousreply 92April 19, 2021 4:21 PM

I spent an hour singing show tunes with Christopher when he was in Boston appearing in "A Matter of Gravity" in 1975.

I was 20 and not quite old enough to go to the bars but Napoleon's would let me in because I was "fun" at the piano bar. (I was also usually the youngest person in the place).

Christopher came in after the performance and sat at the piano bar next to me. I was in the midst of a medley from "Half a Sixpence" and he was not familiar with the show or film. We talked, sang together and it was only as we left that he told me he was appearing in the play with Katharine Hepburn. I launched into a perfectly horrible imitation of her but he laughed.

We hugged and he said, "I hope to see you around". I was too stupid to suggest we continue our talk.

He was very funny, had a nice voice and showed no interest in anyone else around the piano. When I saw "Superman 2" at the Village in Westwood, the way he looked at Margot Kidder when he took her to the Fortress, was very much the way he looked at me while I was singing songs he clearly didn't know.

It's a nice memory and I wish I'd been a tad more aggressive but at least I avoided being turned down.

by Anonymousreply 93April 19, 2021 4:41 PM

Cal Culver was a living doll, and fuck you if you think otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 94April 19, 2021 4:45 PM

I was living in the Times Square are at the time and also once waited for KH to exit the theatre where A Matter of Gravity was playing.

I was stuck by how the woman glowed. As if there were a light emanating from within her. She was like a hologram...not quite real. It was freaky.

by Anonymousreply 97April 19, 2021 5:07 PM

[quote]This is DL, where EVERY male actor IS gay.

Actually, this statement is historically not true.

While DLers will HOPE that certain male actors are gay, when they actually assert it, DLers have a significantly higher hit rate than mere guessing, wishful thinking, or random chance would otherwise generate.

Case in point - Colton Underwood. We've been calling that bitch for years. Others include: Lee Pace, Richard Armitage, Matt Bomer (long before he came out), Ricky Martin (in the early 2000s) and countless others. Essentially every actor who has come out in the past 10 years, DL called it a LONG time ago.

by Anonymousreply 98April 19, 2021 5:34 PM

So if some has-been or relative nobody is gay (Lee Pace? He's dubbing foreign films these days not exactly a headliner), DL always has their number.

by Anonymousreply 99April 19, 2021 5:42 PM

Awesome story R93. He hugged you. He gazed longingly at you. Had the two of you been alone, I think you would have had a VERY salacious story to tell.

by Anonymousreply 100April 19, 2021 6:19 PM

What r94 said. I knew Cal and he was a terrific guy.

by Anonymousreply 101April 19, 2021 6:36 PM

There was a time in the very early 1970s--around when he was part of a Fire Island fashion spread in After Dark, when Cal Culver was the golden boy of NYC. He wasn't heavily gymmed and he didn't have that Byronic hair of thye great beauty, but he was just IT. The spread even included nudes of him perched high up in a swing.

I think he lost that edge quickly, though, teven if he was still very handsome and basically fit (though the smallest bit soft in the stomach). He was also a very pleasant, bright person, much liked by all.

A friend of mine found himself sitting next to CC on a bus, and they fell into convo, talking about the scene, the bars, the men they knew (and had had). Then CC got up. He said, This is my stop. As he turned to go, he added, to my friend, You're a very nice man.

by Anonymousreply 102April 19, 2021 7:14 PM

R101 Do you mean Cal was a terrific guy in the ol' sackaroonie ?

by Anonymousreply 103April 19, 2021 7:18 PM

LOL @103. Sadly, I lacked the funds to find that out.

Cal and I had a mutual friend and through that friend, I met Cal on a number of occasions. We then went on to do some work on separate projects in the theater which were both managed by a colleague, causing us to run into one another on a variety of occasions.

He was a lovely man.

by Anonymousreply 104April 19, 2021 7:28 PM

I met Cal three times through a mutual friend. The first two times he was the definition of a gentleman. The third time, he was a mess. I don't know if it was drugs, drink, or both, but he was a train wreck. The first two times, he was witty. He told some off-color stories about his exploits, but he was never vulgar or trashy. The third time, he was trashy and desperate. My friend was horrified by Cal's behavior.

by Anonymousreply 105April 19, 2021 7:48 PM

Cal was in very bad shape in his last months, and a friend of mine was one of several men who provided financial support to him. There was obviously no quid-pro-quo, he was just such a dear person that they wanted him to make his final days as stress-free as possible.

by Anonymousreply 106April 19, 2021 7:49 PM

[quote] So admirable to trash someone after they've been dead and buried.

Christopher Reeve WAS Superman. He looked exactly like Superman, as if he jumped right out of the comic book. He was perfect.

Out of all the actors who have ever played superheroes, Christopher Reeve and Lynda Carter absolutely looked like the heroes brought to life, they were both the perfect embodiments of Superman and Wonder Woman.

R34, R52 and R56, I guess we’re all in the Cruised by Christopher Reeve Club. I was cruised hard by him at the Hudson Guild Theatre in the intermission of a play called Summer. I was very young looking back then-I could pass for 17 or 18 when I was 26.

I guess Reeve had a wide range of interest when it came to guys. I wonder who the bottom was in the Reeve/Culver relationship-I guess it was Culver. I suppose this before Culver’s long term relationship with Tom Tryon, who eventually dumped him because Culver wouldn’t stop escorting and being flown around the world for sex parties in Munich, Cairo, etc.

by Anonymousreply 111April 19, 2021 8:47 PM

[quote]Kate Winslet recently said there are several big male stars in the closet- I know Travolta is- but he’s such old news that I think she is speaking of younger stars.

Leo D. and Chris Pine are two of them.

by Anonymousreply 112April 19, 2021 8:49 PM

I was cruised by Dennis Quaid in 1983 and only realized it a few months ago.

by Anonymousreply 113April 19, 2021 9:05 PM

Tom Tryon. Now that was a gorgeous man.

by Anonymousreply 114April 19, 2021 9:24 PM

R93 just the mention of Napoleon’s brings me back to that crazy place. Never a hookup on the level of Reeve, but there was a mailman from Southie who had the most amazing dick. The only time I’ve ever enjoyed 69-ing.

by Anonymousreply 115April 19, 2021 9:25 PM

I always found the aw shucks thing grating.

Probably why I liked Dean Cain so much - his Clark was a sensitive normal guy, not a clearly fake mask Superman wore.

But now Dean's a Trump-loving nutbar who claims to want into politics so....my affinity has waned.

by Anonymousreply 116April 20, 2021 12:44 AM

Is there a picture of Christopher pre-nosejob? (If he did have one?)

I never liked his squished Jackson nose.

by Anonymousreply 117April 20, 2021 12:49 AM

Of course he had a nose job and a really unfortunate one. I'm not a big fan of BIG guys who look like Suit Models but Chris Reeve's whole Cro-Magnon vibe was ruined by his delicate, pinched and very artificial looking nose.

That said, he was by far the best actor to play Clark Kent AND Superman. But nothing special to look at other than too BIG and somehow girly.

by Anonymousreply 118April 20, 2021 1:00 AM

Tom Tryon was one of the first men who made me shiver when I was a little boy. I was watching Moon Pilot on Wonderful World of Disney and there was a shirtless shot of him maybe in the bathroom?(I haven't seen the film since) And the beautiful alien(she was from France) walks in on him and he covers his bare chest in embarrassment. I could have melted.

by Anonymousreply 119April 20, 2021 1:02 AM

He kissed Farley Granger in the play Deathtrap on Broadway in the late 70s. Everyone in the theater gasped, but I think more because of the plot twist it revealed than the kiss itself. Actually, may have been the very early 80s.

by Anonymousreply 120April 20, 2021 1:20 AM

Tom Tryon was all over NYC in the 70s and 80s. I hate to say it , but by then he was tired and really queeny looking. I had the opportunity but no way. Died of HIV.

by Anonymousreply 121April 20, 2021 1:22 AM

R120, No, he kissed Michael Caine in the film.

by Anonymousreply 122April 20, 2021 1:22 AM

R121, Otto Preminger practically drove Tom Tryon to a nervous breakdown during filming of "The Cardinal".

by Anonymousreply 123April 20, 2021 1:24 AM

Michael Caine in the Film and Farley Granger on stage.

by Anonymousreply 124April 20, 2021 1:24 AM

I liked him better in "Somewhere In Time" than his more famous Superman movies.

by Anonymousreply 125April 20, 2021 1:27 AM

r130 soaps are for simpletons. Don't turn this into a soap thread. There are plenty of other threads for you freaks on DL.

R131, Fuck off, you moron.

by Anonymousreply 132April 20, 2021 1:48 AM

I didn't know Reeve did soaps.

by Anonymousreply 133April 20, 2021 1:57 AM

R127 Thanks for posting the "Love of Life" clip. Interesting to see Reeve in an early role.

by Anonymousreply 134April 20, 2021 1:58 AM

r132 only simpletons are watching soaps in 2021. Most people don't even know they're even still on the air. And even more pathetic are people who are still watching old reruns of soaps from decades ago. I can't even imagine. If I were watching old soaps my family and friends would probably stage an intervention. That is the most pathetic, loserish thing.

by Anonymousreply 135April 20, 2021 1:59 AM

Yeah, porn stars are known for being SO truthful. I think this is just horseshit from some cumbucket who just wants people to buy his book. There are never been ANY Christopher Reeve gay rumors that I know of.

by Anonymousreply 136April 20, 2021 2:01 AM

So people watching soaps in the 60s, 70s, and 80s weren't simpletons?

by Anonymousreply 137April 20, 2021 2:01 AM

R136 It's more like just a porn star... read the thread before ranting.

by Anonymousreply 138April 20, 2021 2:03 AM

Unlike Dean Cain, he was a truly super man.

Years ago, I had a conversation about Reeve with the actress, Jane Alexander.

She was his friend, a fan, and genuinely broken up by his then recent accident. She was also deeply saddened that he couldn’t, as had been planned, go into National politics. She said he was smart, had a natural star power and all the right (i.e. Left leaning) movers and shakers were pulling for him.

Was a tragic loss.

by Anonymousreply 139April 20, 2021 2:21 AM

"He hugged you. He gazed longingly at you. Had the two of you been alone, I think you would have had a VERY salacious story to tell."

Where did he say that Reeve "gazed longingly" at him? You have reading comprehension issues. You're also reading a lot more into the situation than was there. Sounds like Reeve was just being an amiable, nice guy, not trying to get the guy to go somewhere with him and suck his cock.

As for Reeve, I read his memoir "Still Me." It was written after the horrible accident that left him a vent dependent quadriplegic. It's great, very honest. He wasn't gay.

by Anonymousreply 140April 20, 2021 2:29 AM

"Only simpletons are watching soaps in 2021. "

Well, there must be a lot of simpletons, because "Grey's Anatomy" is still on. Aren't ALL of those dreadful Shonda Rimes shows nothing but shitty soaps? There's obviously an audience for that garbage.

by Anonymousreply 141April 20, 2021 2:32 AM

r115 Napoleon's was a memorable place. Marie was the pianist the night I met Christopher and in the years that followed, despite the nickname some gave the place ("The Wrinkle Room"), it was never dull.

I learned a lot from the pianists too, on how to entertain a crowd and used some of those skills when I played in Ogunquit, Maine in the 1980's.

by Anonymousreply 142April 20, 2021 2:33 AM

I don’t believe that it took two years for Reeve to realize Cal/Casey did gay porn. He even had a film out called Casey, for god’s sake.

by Anonymousreply 143April 20, 2021 2:44 AM

by Anonymousreply 144April 20, 2021 2:48 AM

[quote]Where did he say that Reeve "gazed longingly" at him?

"When I saw "Superman 2" at the Village in Westwood, the way he looked at Margot Kidder when he took her to the Fortress, was very much the way he looked at me while I was singing songs he clearly didn't know."

If you've seen the film, you'd know the comparison. This is not rocket science.

"We hugged and he said, "I hope to see you around."

Do you always hug men that you've just met?

"(He) showed no interest in anyone else around the piano."

Ahem.

[quote]You're also reading a lot more into the situation than was there.

by Anonymousreply 146April 20, 2021 4:17 AM

I don’t, R146/asshole. In fact a few posts back I question Reeve not knowing Culver did porn for two years.

Your grease fire awaits...

by Anonymousreply 147April 20, 2021 4:19 AM

"Who died and made you the analyzation queen?"

Oh for fuck's sweet sake, that little tale is obviously by someone who wants to believe Christopher Reeve wanted to fuck him. Wishful thinking on his part. But what I know about him he was a friendly, amiable guy to EVERYBODY. I suppose for some people that might be misinterpreted as a sexual invite. But it obviously wasn't, because Christopher Reeve was not gay. But I suppose for some poor things it's delicious to think that he liked to fuck porn stars.

by Anonymousreply 148April 20, 2021 4:24 AM

If Christopher Reeve had been out, he wouldn’t have been on that horse.

by Anonymousreply 171April 20, 2021 9:02 AM

R167, If you read my post up thread, I went home with him one night and rather than have sex, we spent the night discussing his daddy issues. I really do think that he had sex with men to tr and compensate for his bad relationship with his father.

by Anonymousreply 172April 20, 2021 10:14 AM

I have read that he could be unpleasant and cold with his fans. You can't be nice all the time especially with the fan base of a superhero.

I also read that the horse he was riding on was too small for his body type. Though one does hear of people getting thrown from horses somewhat often and ending up with bad backs for the rest of their life.

by Anonymousreply 173April 20, 2021 2:25 PM

Sexual and romantic identity was much, much, much less questioned back in the days than it is today: and dl questions sexual and romantic identity of the stars of their time (mainly the 70s and 80s and 60s) much less than of today's stars, and even less of Golden Age stars, it's tiring. Lots of paid posters, et al and censorship involved always as well, of course they are more important for current stars, but anyways.

He told his father (who was apparently a snobbish man) he had been cast as the lead in the movie version of "Superman," and his father was thrilled, until Reeve realized his father had mistakenly though he had been cast as the lead in a film version of George Bernard Shaw's "Man and Superman."

He was an odd actor--sometimes he could be great (as in "Somewhere in Time" or the Superman movies), and sometimes he seemed wooden, as in "The Bostonians." I think it really depended on what kind of direction he received.

by Anonymousreply 193April 21, 2021 9:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 200April 22, 2021 12:51 AM

"I'm all for Reeve being gay, bi, or whatever, but are there any supposed accounts outside of the tenuous gay bubble of Datalounge?"

No, I've never heard of any gay rumors about this particular actor, outside of Datalounge and Darwin Porter. He's been dead since 2004. A long time. Long enough for worms coming out of the woodwork and telling tales about his supposed love of cock. If a handsome actor dies, after enough time has passed, someone always comes out with the revelation that he was secretly gay or bi. Happens all the time.

by Anonymousreply 201April 22, 2021 1:19 AM

R173/r190/r202 have to agree - great /seemingly perfect on paper , and maybe in real life it was different, but little to none of it translated on screen. Just not a very good actor and (even more important) didn’t have the charisma to make up for it either . And that’s why his career floundered after the Superman movies.

He’s so sainted now, I’m not sure much in the way of rumors etc would ever come out about him, even if they do exist.

by Anonymousreply 218April 23, 2021 9:52 PM

He might have been a gay stag.

by Anonymousreply 219April 23, 2021 9:59 PM

Oh, please R217. The man did not ping at all, and I say this as someone who actually went home with him. He was pretty much a blank slate which is why he worked so much. If he "pinged like a Geiger counter.", the big reveal in Death Trap would have been ruined. He was cast in A Matter of Gravity because he was not going to upstage Hepburn. He was good, but not too good.

by Anonymousreply 220April 23, 2021 10:02 PM

r93 Even after spending those few hours with him singing show tunes at Napoleon's in 1975, I cannot definitely answer whether he was gay, straight or in-between.

I've known lots of straight men who love show tunes and even some who have gone, in the past, to gay bars to sing at a piano bar. That's especially true for someone with a love and interest in theater.

As I noted, he didn't say who he was, other than "My name's Chris..." until we were leaving and he mentioned that he was appearing in "A Matter of Gravity". To me he was just some cute guy who seemed to be enjoying the playing of Marie, who was one of those Boston legends back in those days. He was also the only other young person at the piano bar which tended to skew much older.

He seemed to delight in my pleasure at naming every tune, knowing the words, the show it came from and he made it famous. At one point, I was gulping my Bacardi and Coke and could not blurt out the name and he very enthusiastically yelled, "Hey Look Me Over" from "Wildcat". He seemed very pleased with himself and it turned out a friend had the original cast album and he had listened to it.

Most of our exchanges were around the songs, my background, at 20, in music and why I wasn't upstairs in the disco dancing.

I explained that if I come for the piano bar, nothing deters me from that. If I want to pick someone up or get picked up, I go upstairs.

The hug he gave as we walked out the door could well have been that of a straight man. There was no grope or grab or anything that would indicate something other than a sincere thank you for providing him with an entertaining evening.

Now had I invited him back to my room at the Copley, his response would enable me to answer one way or the other. As it is, I'll leave it up to others to make a determination. It was a fun evening and he was sweet.

by Anonymousreply 222April 23, 2021 10:36 PM

Superman IV was my sexual awakening as a nine or ten-year-old in the '80s. This is re-exciting my fantasies about Mark Pillow and Christopher Reeve.

R187

Routh seems to be gay and badly closeted. Reeve was bi or maybe just theater gay. Cain is a straight Republican. Cavill, despite many on DL who insist he must be gay because he's hot, seems to actually be a big gamer nerd who prefers teen girls.

by Anonymousreply 224April 23, 2021 11:35 PM

r222 I actually covered most of that in a story for a national publication after Reeve's passing.

by Anonymousreply 225April 23, 2021 11:48 PM

Yes, and you were fabulous in that story R225! A twenty year old at the piano bar, who knew all the words. I'm surprised it's not been made into a film.

by Anonymousreply 226April 23, 2021 11:57 PM

Mark Pillow was fucking insanely hot too. Like he just stepped off a stage at Chippendales.

by Anonymousreply 227April 24, 2021 12:45 AM

R227, I'm seriously shocked that his career didn't go anywhere. Even without talent, someone that pretty should've got a few nibbles here and there.

by Anonymousreply 228April 24, 2021 12:47 AM

^Agreed. If nothing more than a few parts in some sleazy sex thrillers.

by Anonymousreply 229April 24, 2021 12:57 AM

"I'm seriously shocked that his career didn't go anywhere. "

His career had its ups and downs, like it does with most actors. He turned down some roles that turned out to be big hits for other actors. Of course "Superman" was his most successful acting role. He worked pretty steadily. I think he did pretty well.

His was one of the great Hollywood tragedies. This big, handsome, athletic man, only in his early forties, married to the love of his life and having recently become a father again, rendered a vent dependent quadriplegic due to a fall from a horse. So unbelievably sad.

by Anonymousreply 230April 24, 2021 1:27 AM

R230, I think R227 was referring to Mark Pillow.

by Anonymousreply 231April 24, 2021 3:07 AM

" I think [R227] was referring to Mark Pillow."

Sorry, I must have missed that. There's been so much snarky comment about Reeve I thought it was about him.

by Anonymousreply 232April 24, 2021 3:16 AM

[Quote] Cavill, despite many on DL who insist he must be gay because he's hot, seems to actually be a big gamer nerd who prefers teen girls.

Which teen girls?? Funny how those rumours only started after Tara.

by Anonymousreply 233April 24, 2021 6:26 AM

Well, Christopher Reeve's career wasn't exactly on fire prior to the accident. He supposedly turned down a lot of good stuff and said yes to terrible stuff. And, to be honest, he was a limited actor.

by Anonymousreply 234April 24, 2021 6:34 AM

He got a few nibbles all right...

Jeez, never, ever heard of Mark Pillow before. Of course Superman 4 was a bomb, so I guess that didn't help his 'career'.

And who came up with that NAME?

by Anonymousreply 236April 24, 2021 8:21 AM

And here he is today. Seems happy, but doesn't mention where he's been all these years.

R220, Perhaps your gaydar is in need of tuning, because he definitely pinged to me, from his days on "Love of Life" onward.

I don’t mean Richard Simmons or Ross Mathews type pinging, but Reeve had an effete manner that belied his being a totally straight man.

Think Jack Cassidy, only less flamboyant. On the surface, most would guess that Cassidy was gay, yet according to Shirley Jones he was very into women(she named names), with a desire for men, as well, and she confirmed the legendary Cole Porter rumors.

by Anonymousreply 238April 24, 2021 11:36 AM

Anyone claiming that DL created the gay rumors about Christopher Reeve was not around in the 1970's, or if they were, had not even a passing interest in the theater or the gay community. I never had him, so I can't say the rumors were true. But they were constant. And pervasive. All long, long, before Data Lounge was even a glimmer in Muriel's eye. (Muriel being a cyclops, of course.)

In any event, it's of little point arguing whether an actor is gay or bi or straight. What they are, almost to a man, is narcissistic. They are really in love with themselves, not anyone else. They will bed anyone who feeds their narcissism or can advance their careers. Reeve was tall, dark, and handsome. He had a shot at the big time. It's absurd to think he would not tailor every decision around advancing that goal.

Being out and gay in the 1970's would have destroyed his chances for a big career. But mixed signals kept things humming nicely, especially within the industry. He kept all eyes on Chris, because he presented himself as likely to be attainable.

I remember watching the above Johnny Carson interview back when I was as an emerging gayling, along with my best (soon to be lifelong fag hag) friend.

Roughly three minutes in she turned to me and exclaimed: “Oh my gosh, look at him. Superman is so completely gay !”

by Anonymousreply 240April 24, 2021 12:37 PM

I never saw anything about Reeve that made me think he was gay. But I guess gay rumors were inevitable. Any actor with exceptional good looks tends to have gay rumors spread about him, because all good looking male actors are gay, right? I think that's the attitude for some people.

by Anonymousreply 241April 24, 2021 7:18 PM

Being out and gay today would destroy your chances for a big career. Why do you think Downey went back into the closet?

by Anonymousreply 242April 24, 2021 7:27 PM

R242, Morton Downey was gay?

by Anonymousreply 243April 24, 2021 7:51 PM

What is “theatre gay?” LOL love that term already.

by Anonymousreply 244April 24, 2021 8:09 PM

Perhaps it has something to do with "Jazz Hands".

by Anonymousreply 245April 24, 2021 8:44 PM

It was common knowledge in Hollywood circles, Reeves and Robin Williams were long-time lovers who made a pact, if one got famous they would take care of the other no matter what. When Reeves had his accident, Wiliams was devastated.

by Anonymousreply 246April 24, 2021 8:48 PM

^ Robin Williams was a long time pussy hound. That seems unlikely.

by Anonymousreply 247April 24, 2021 8:50 PM

R247, I believe they may have made that pact, but I don't believe they were ever lovers.

by Anonymousreply 248April 24, 2021 8:58 PM

R246 They both became household names with Superman and Mork and Mindy at the same time in 1978. "Common knowledge" they were lovers? And a PACT? Are you kidding?

by Anonymousreply 249April 24, 2021 8:59 PM

R249 nope - it was before they became famous. Williams was a notorious skirt chaser yes, but he loved Reeves. Both married women but they continued to care and love for each other.

by Anonymousreply 250April 24, 2021 9:01 PM

Reeve was known to swing both ways in NY theater circles. I thought this was pretty well-known.

by Anonymousreply 251April 25, 2021 12:30 AM

"It was common knowledge in Hollywood circles, Reeves and Robin Williams were long-time lovers who made a pact, if one got famous they would take care of the other no matter what."

Hoo boy, that is really laughable. They were NOT lovers. They were friends. They made no such "pact." By the way, Robin Williams didn't pay all of Reeve's medical expenses after his accident. Of course he wouldn't. Reeves wouldn't have expected him to. I don't know how that rumor got started, probably to make Robin Williams seem like a saint or something.

by Anonymousreply 252April 25, 2021 12:46 AM

"Reeve was known to swing both ways in NY theater circles. I thought this was pretty well-known."

It's not Seems like the typical kind of gossip that gets thrown around in "NY theater circles."

by Anonymousreply 253April 25, 2021 12:48 AM

What gay male leading man actor would fuck that ugly hairy flat nosed ape Robin Williams? For fun, because they were roommates? Get a life. I know Reeve and Robin were great friends. Leave it at that. Lifelong.

That's a lot more interesting and gratifying than having a gay psychotic break to imagine them sexual partners. Gross. They might have cuddled.

by Anonymousreply 254April 25, 2021 12:55 AM

r253 believe me it was talked about.

by Anonymousreply 255April 25, 2021 1:15 AM

Who's the annoying poster who puts other posters' comments in quotation marks because he can't seem to grasp how to fucking quote someone properly?

by Anonymousreply 256April 25, 2021 1:18 AM

R253, You're an annoying moron. Go away.

by Anonymousreply 257April 25, 2021 1:29 AM

He really is. The constant quotation marks are just the tip of the iceberg.

by Anonymousreply 258April 25, 2021 1:37 AM

R256, R257, and R258 are three of a kind, if not the same person: all insufferable cunts with shit for brains. Poor dumb fucks.

by Anonymousreply 259April 25, 2021 2:11 AM

R259 exhibits a troubled mind on many threads tonight. F&F. He can't be helped.

by Anonymousreply 260April 25, 2021 2:17 AM

R238: "Love of Life"? What are you, 238 years old?

by Anonymousreply 261April 25, 2021 3:05 AM

Yup, R246 is THE expert on Christopher Reeves, I mean, Reeve.

by Anonymousreply 262April 25, 2021 3:07 AM

I quite liked Christopher in Switching Channels. It's a great comedy.

by Anonymousreply 263April 25, 2021 6:33 AM

R263, Kathleen Turner loathed Burt Reynolds and tried repeatedly to get him fired.

by Anonymousreply 264April 25, 2021 7:16 AM

the "pact" has been written about before -

According to some accounts, Williams and Reeve had a pact that whoever first broke through as an actor would help the other. Whether or not that agreement existed, neither would require such assistance. By the late 1970s, they were both enjoying success, thanks to Reeve's role as Superman and Williams' turn as an irrepressible alien in the television series Mork & Mindy.

In 1973, Williams and Reeve began studying acting at Juilliard. On the surface, they seemed to have little in common. In a 2006 interview, Williams said, "We were totally opposite — me coming from the West Coast and a junior college, and him from the hard-core Ivy League. He used to be the studly studly of all studlies, and I was the little fool ferret boy." But their differences didn't drive them apart. Instead, as Reeve noted, "We clicked right away because we were exact opposites."

Williams and Reeve spent a lot of time together as they were in an advanced program led by John Houseman. (And they were also roommates!) Through it all, they stood by each other as needed. In 2013, Williams reminisced during a Reddit session that Reeve was "such a great friend to me at Juillard [sic], literally feeding me because I don't think I literally had money for food or my student loan hadn't come in yet, and he would share his food with me."

I don't really care if people beleive me,Plenty of people in Hollywood know these things, They just go unspokne. Like Rudin being a complete asshole, open hollywood secret, or Weinstein. Meryl knew. They all knew.
