I'm watching Connie Ford right now, chewing up the scenery in "Worse Than Murder" from the "Thriller" anthology. It airs in perpetuity on the American Classics channel. Connie plays a really despicable, scheming woman hellbent on getting her share of the family loot. I didn't know Constance was a lezzie, but then again, I don't know much about her. I only know her from the memes of her bitch slapping Sandra Dee.

I don't think Marsha Clark is a lesbian. I clearly remember a splashy story in Daytime TV circa 1981 profiling her romance with John Wesley Shipp. They referred to each other as soul mates, and there were a ton of pics of them embracing and looking very romantic with each other. I've heard gay rumors about him throughout the years, but I always thought back to that magazine story, and then discounted the rumors. I think Geraldine Court may have been gay.

What was amazing about Constance Ford is that she had incredible chemistry with the actors she worked with, particularly the young men who stayed on the show for a period of time like Matthew Crane and Tom Eplin. Her tears when Mac died seemed to be real. Irene Daily also had a really good raportte with Matthew Crane.
Dame Judith Anderson also seemed to flirt with the younger actors, winking at Dane Witherspoon and in one scene checking out the backside of A. Martinez. Lois Kibbee was very beloved by the younger audience, and she had a great spark when she did scenes with Charles Grant, Larkin Malloy, Mark Arnold and John LoPrieno.
Anyone who doubts that lesbians can be funny should watch these women in their soap roles. Lois gave great eye roll and even as the powerful Elizabeth Sanders could cut loose, especially when she was with TV granddaughter Marcia Cross. "The things we did in my day would curl your hair!", she told her. I loved an interview where she talked about her New York City apartment where she had monthly maintenance duty. "I wield a mean broom", she said with great irreverence.
The scene with Ada dancing around while mopping the floor listening to big band music is a classic. Liz Matthews would not have turned into a humorous busybody had the writers not noticed Irene Daily's comic side. Check out Connie in the movie "House of Women" where she beats up Jeanne Cooper. I guess there is a bit of a difference being a bit bohemian while working on the stage and with a variety of people than being in a non-arts profession. These women all had a bit of Tallulah Bankhead in them.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 23, 2021 5:01 PM |
At what point did Ada really become masculine in appearance , with the short hair and suit jackets? Was that after her last husband died?
It seemed that they were exploring an Ada/Vince romance at one point, but that ended when Vince was recast and Mary McKinnon showed up.

R70 you have to remember that the late 80s and early 90s had all kinds of women wearing short hair and men's jackets. It was the style for a few years - sort of the reaction to the Dallas/Dynasty look and the floral Laura Ashley Republican Stepford Wife look of the early 80s.
So Ada wearing more masculine stuff at that point may have just been part of that. I'm sure Connie wanted no frills and likely they seldom spent bank on her wardrobe.

For a while, Liz Matthews was involved in Nicole Love's fashion business. I remember cast warning Nicole about Liz, but for the short time that this story went on, Liz was actually quite nurturing and not the pesky busybody. Irene Daily continue to work in the theater after she was written out of the show. I saw her in "The Father", a revival of the Strindberg play, starring Frank Langella, no relation to the later Langella play that just became an Anthony Hopkins movie. Irene was highly acclaimed and deserved a Tony nomination. I know she also took over the role of the grandmother that Irene Worth originated in "Lost in Yonkers". She was the only actress from the original "Subject Was Roses" not to get to repeat her role in the film.
Both Connie and Irene played killers on "The Edge of Night" who slew their victim by stabbing. Irene, as Pamela Stewart, was going after Nicole (Maeve McGuire) but stabbed Stephanie Martin (Alice Hirson) instead. Irene and Maeve were reunited when Maeve came on "Another World" as Elena.

R76 Wow, that's how Liz Foster got her groove back! He's 71 and she's 92 this year. She had that great white mane of hair, but her skin was deliciously smooth. They always put her in those dowdy house dresses, even when she came back in 1993, but in her 2006 return, she had a completely different style, much more relaxed, strange considering that Liz thought she was dying at that point and needed a major operation .

R80 Apparently, she is, and was good friends with Linda Gibboney, the original Gina, who is lesbian as well. Not sure that they were involved.
I know Maureen Garrett came out. Didn't Jill Larson hint that she was lesbian?
The great thing about these women is that they are wonderful people as well and take away a lot of the negative stereotypes that even gay men put on lesbians. I find that the lesbians who prefer to hang out with gay men do become more easy going and funny. I'll never forget two lesbians at an LA gay pride who carry the sign that said "Dykes who love show tunes". I think they ended up getting more hugs from gay men than women at that pride parade.

by Anonymous | reply 102 | April 26, 2021 10:14 AM |
R102 Funny you mention Christine Jones. I just saw her in the movie "Stealing Home" as Jodie Foster's mother. It was right after she left "One Life to Live" in 1987. She never stayed on a daytime soap more than 2 years. Her best known role, as Janice Frame, didn't even last past a year and a half, and she was front burner on that show pretty much the entire time. On "Rituals", she started off as the heroine, but over the years run gradually got more scheming and eventually psychotic. It would be interesting to see what she could have done with Catsy Kirkland on "Ryan's Hope", as they could have extended the story but not have it as the front burner storyline. But from that story came the Charlotte Greer arch which was great. She doesn't ping to me though, but there are plenty of feminine women mentioned here who were/are lesbians.

One thing's for certain, Louise Shaffer is not, very much in love with her late husband, Roger Crews. She was very honest in talking about her marriage on social media after he died. Pictures of them together showed them truly happy together. He was very handsome as well. I wish she was discussed more for her work. Even though she may not have been the ideal Stephanie on "Search", she acted just fine. As Rae though, she brought necessary life to Riverside outside of Ryan's Bar. I loved her short-term role as Goldie Kane on AMC with her wild hair and silk robes and Charles Keating. She should have come back later on to be part of the Richard Fields or Vanessa Bennett storyline. She was writing for AMC at the time.

Sheila did murder taylor but she came back from the dead years later.

She seemed to be r165. I remember that Soap Opera Weekly did a feature on soap star’s pets, and they featured Elizabeth Savage (who briefly played Gwyneth on Loving and was very campy-she would have been perfect as Sally Spectra’s daughter on B&B).
Elizabeth and Jackie were featured with their cats. The only thing missing in the picture was a vagina cape and a vegan nut loaf.

R170 I met her through several gay friends whom she hangs out with, and yes, she is a lesbian. She looked exactly the same when I met her 20 years ago as she did those soaps. I don't think she ever aged. And yes, she still look like she could be Julia Barr's sister. I don't think she had a girlfriend when I met her, but she was very content simply palling around with her group of gay male friends. Probably one of the nicest lipstick lesbians I've ever met.

by Anonymous | reply 185 | May 2, 2021 5:13 PM |
I would love to check out an episode of Peg Murry's sitcom: ME AND MRS. C, certainly it has lesbian vibes galore.
LA TIMES REVIEW: "Warming up to the characters is as pleasant as hugging a cactus. They’re a thoroughly disagreeable lot: a 62-year-old widow (Peg Murray) who makes fun of her grandchildren and schemes to get money from her son (Gary Bayer), a whining wimp whose wife (Ellen Regan) is a materialistic, two-faced meddler.
So she rents out a room in her home for $87 a month--and that’s supposed to solve her problems. Or it would, if only this young, sweet-looking college graduate she’s taken in (newcomer Misha McK) didn’t turn out to be--are you ready?--an ex-con. Seems she served time for armed robbery. Don’t ask how that came about; no answer is provided. All that matters, apparently, is that she’s cute."

Elaine Princi has been all over daytime. No husband. No children. She played Miranda on ATWT....Melissas evil mother Linda on DAYS---she owned a male strip club and Pete Jannings worked there...But most notably she played Dorian Lord from 1990-1992 when Robin Strasser walked. Elaine was prominent during the Mendorra Ambassador Lord part of Dorians life. Dorian also dated the 20 year old waiter Jason....OLTL wooed back Robin Strasser in 1993 and Elaine unceremoniously got the boot.

Did Connie and Irene take turns eating out dear Geri when she was on AW as June Laverty?
by Anonymous | reply 202 | May 4, 2021 11:48 AM |
Elaine Princi got her best work as Dorian, but replacing Margaret Mason on Days of Our lives was a mistake. I guess they didn't ask Margaret back because she had heart issues and probably couldn't commit to a long-term contract. At the same time, she was making a brief return as Eve on The Young and the Restless, and when she came back in 1993, Margaret appeared sporadically for nearly a year, but never for more than a few weeks at a time except when they had her in the hospital just laying there in a coma. I recently found a 1976 episode of Margaret as Linda, and she was very subtle. With Elaine as Linda, it was obvious that they were writing her with the intention of making her one-dimensional and thus expendable.

So what happened? If you know, that is. DId the network finally win the battle and had her replaced? Something must have happened beyond that though, because actors on soaps are fired and rehired by the same show or another one. At least they were, when there were more than 4 soaps on the air.

Deidre Hall wanted off-spring, just like a proper Floridian lady should. For YEARS she searched for the one who would make her pregnant. Nothing happened, And OH how she suffered. Then Dee found out SHE was infertile. The solution? Marry TV exec queen Steve Sohmer and have children via surrogate. Ten or so years later they divorce.
