Are you enticed?

They should also pay all the unproductive hillbillies, methheads, sponging unemployed miners, and gormless teen moms to move OUT of the beautiful state. Then I'd consider it, sure.

by Anonymousreply 1April 17, 2021 11:06 AM

Maybe if they pay me $12K every year I live there...

by Anonymousreply 2April 17, 2021 11:09 AM

It might bring in more educated people, which could translate into progressive/Democratic voters.

Shepherdstown looks kind of pleasant.

Shepherdstown is very cute. The non-financial perks are actually cooler than the cash.

by Anonymousreply 5April 17, 2021 11:16 AM

It is a beautiful state.

West Virginia is absolutely beautiful.

People from MD/DC go to the race track/casino in Charlestown because it’s such a short drive.

When I was little we would go to Harper’s Ferry (the town, not the park) to go fishing and tubing.

^ Harpers Ferry is great for anyone who enjoys hiking, fishing and wildlife.

How's gay life in West Virginia?

by Anonymousreply 12April 17, 2021 11:54 AM

There’s an old-timey general store in Shepardstown (O’Hurleys) which is filled with unique stuff, plus on some nights locals play bluegrass music in the back. Shepardstown is also home to US Fish and Wildlife’s national training center so there are crops of educated more-liberal people visiting the town. It’s a pretty unique town for West Virginia.

by Anonymousreply 13April 17, 2021 12:01 PM

I think there is a gay bar in Morgantown. There used to be one anyway.

by Anonymousreply 14April 17, 2021 12:06 PM

WV is beautiful. I’d move if I had a partner.

by Anonymousreply 15April 17, 2021 12:06 PM

If I could find someone like WV native (late) Tom McBride , yes, I'd move there in a heartbeat for the money. Otherwise not.....

Mountaineer here. 2 gay bars in Charleston and one in Morgantown I used to haunt in my WVU days. Still closed for Covid but I believe there’s hope of reopening. The owner is a bit much (self-important grizzled leather daddy), but he has done a great job of keeping a gay space going in that part of the country that can cater to a little bit of anyone. I had great times at Vice Versa (just skip fetish and puppy play nights if you don’t want to see yocals in creepy dog masks). There are gay people befriending one another, dating, and having sex all over the state, but options are of course very limited and they reflect the demographics of the state (generally lower SES). Nothing wrong with that, but a gay man coming from a large and affluent metropolitan area would be unhappily in for culture shock. There is some redneck and hillbilly eye candy (yes, really). Although most just for looking, enough are up for touching. I’m not seeking an LTR an don’t care to date, so I don’t struggle with the limited options at the moment. I know wonderful people gay and straight all over the state. Shamefully the reddest state in the country, but 235,000 people still voted for Biden this past year, and they all mean something to me despite being wildly outnumbered by brainwashed trump scum. Some good local progressive politicians. Something touching about progressive types in this part of the country. I won’t give up on my state, and I know it’s not for everyone. It will be decades before a turn-around. Come visit, hit up our state parks, listen to some bluegrass, but I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to stay.

I went to Vice-Versa once, and had a good time. It was a pretty mixed crowd (lgbt) and I suppose a few straights.

by Anonymousreply 18April 17, 2021 12:45 PM

just skip fetish and puppy play nights if you don’t want to see yocals in creepy dog masks.

WTF? Did I miss a memo? Is this happening all over and I didn't notice? Is this common enough draw a crowd? Are there Puppy OnlyFans? I'm afraid to google it.

Why cant people just suck and fuck anymore?

My sister and BIL retired to the side of a mountain 20 years ago. All this land and open space they would say

They used to regularly drive 5 hours back to New Jersey to go to their doctors. Now that my BIL is in his 80s they are moving to Dekaware to get close to home treatment for things that happen to you when you're in your 80s

by Anonymousreply 20April 17, 2021 1:00 PM

But for most of those 20 years they seemed to have had a very nice life on that mountain R20

What's the general size range of Appalachian hillbilly meat?

WV is a beautiful state, but outside of liberal enclaves like Harpers Ferry (which is expensive because it's considered DC adjacent) or college towns like Morgantown: 1. cellphone service is poor 2. internet service is poor/unreliable. Minus the MAGA mindset (which is no worse than other rural areas), the infrastructure is so poor. Plus, WV has a serious/no joke opioid problem. The people stumbling around the non-campus areas of Morgantown look like the Walking Dead. I'd be a bit worried about living in a rural isolated place with spotty cell service with drug seeking types who see me as an easy target with $$

R15, let's go!
