Any of them would have been better than Helen Hunt. Her Oscar plus Hilary Swank twice defeating Annette Benning are the two greatest injustices in my lifetime. (I forgive the "might as well give her one" awards, like Jessica Tandy's).

If I had to choose, I would pick Helena Bonham Carter for The Wings of the Dove.

Easily Helena Bonham Carter, who had the best film and most complex role of all the nominees. This review from Nick Davis captures what I love about her in this movie:

"Calibrations of power, internal ambivalences, peaks and dips of desire, shades of malignity, generosity, hypocrisy, and accusation—Bonham Carter captures all of it in her most watchful, most knowing film performance."

She won more critics' prizes than any other actress that year, then lost her momentum when Judi Dench took the Golden Globe for her dour, competent, but unsurprising turn in 'Mrs. Brown,' a mediocre made-for-TV movie given a big screen promotion by Miramax. Billy Connolly was easily the MVP there, but got no love come Oscar time.

So what did we decide? I say Helen deserved her Oscar.
