Possibly the stupidest thing I've ever seen here. Lactose intolerance is very real. It affects most of the world who didn't adapt as well to dairy over the centuries as Northern Europeans. My parents and I are LC. Both my children are, to different degrees. I can drink some milk but if I drink too much, I'm off the the bathroom. My children didn't tolerate milk-based formula but we better with soy. Again, no one in our family had to swear off milk, but we all have low tolerance.

by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 17, 2021 3:22 AM |
R12 is correct. Restless Leg Syndrome isn't a syndrome, but is a real syndrome. In my case I spent about two years dependent upon diphenhydramine (benadryl) and melatonin to get to sleep. Excess both of these can cause a horrible electrical crawling sensation in the legs when taken long term. I had a week of horrible, sleepless nights when I stopped taking them, but my issues with restless leg syndrome mostly went away afterward. I still get it occasionally, especially when I am stressed. I think it is more of a psychological issue now, but it was definitely caused by my abuse of antihistamines and melatonin.

Restless leg syndrome is fake? Why? and why would anyone fake it? I don't have it, but it seems real and relatively harmless, just uncomfortable.
Everything IS in our heads, were are starting to realize it, but the physical symptoms and manifestion of illness and disease is real. We think about it and feel it in our heads. We feel pain in our brain. Stress makes us sick.
Not everything is like a fucking broken leg or brain cancer (which is also literally in our heads).

Dataloungers are notoriously ill-informed when it comes to medical issues. A couple years ago it got to the point where you'd see multiple comments in threads on medical topics along the lines of, "I don't care WHAT that peer-reviewed paper says, I think lupus is FAKE" and they were serious.
Older DLers who don't want to admit the forum has gone to shit will claim this is all trolling and pointless bitchery, but if you've been here for any length of time, you've seen the low-key medical advice threads with actively dangerous and stupid advice accepted as truth, so you know this isn't just people having a laugh.

I think lupus is real however I'm not convinced that fibromyalgia is mainly because everyone I've ever met who claims to have it is a fat, middle-aged woman who resents having to work and would use their flare ups to get out of doing work or other unpleasant duties.
Also, too many mothers pretending their kids are allergic to everything. My step-brother is married to a woman who loves hauling their two sons to the doctor at the hint of a sneeze and dosing them with every kind of drug, convinced they are allergic to things. Those kids spend their childhood drugged up with dark shadows under their eyes and lethargic or running around hyped up depending on what she's got them on.

[quote]I'm not convinced that fibromyalgia is mainly because everyone I've ever met who claims to have it is a fat, middle-aged woman who resents having to work and would use their flare ups to get out of doing work or other unpleasant duties
It occurs at a rate of about 2% of the population. You'd have to know 200 people to know even TWO people who fit this description, let alone a whole slew of them, as you're implying.

Those kids spend their childhood drugged up with dark shadows under their eyes and lethargic or running around hyped up depending on what she's got them on.
So you're saying that their doctor prescribes handfuls of unneeded medications to kids and is doing them serious harm? Why have you not reported him to the authorities?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | April 17, 2021 4:19 PM |
R97, you are babbling. What I said was I've met many women who fit what I described. My point was they didn't really have fibro but they used it.
How should I know what doctors she takes them to? She has several. All I'm saying is that the kids are not as allergic to stuff as she wants them to be. She's a hypochondriac and making her kids follow her path.
You really should lighten up though.

It's not that we don't think this conditions are real. It's that we recognize that for legions of "Bunikas" (grasping their remaining spoons), these conditions are a way to get disability/benefits and entry into disability blogging.
This is due to many of these conditions not having a definitive lab result/finding demonstrating unequivocally the presence of the disease, and aslo having "non specific symptoms" that occur with many disease states.

Restless Leg Syndrome is not fake. I have it sometimes. It started before I started taking benadryl, but I do take lots of other pills for real things (transplant, high blood pressure), and psychiatric things (nervous disorders). So yes, the Restless Legs could be a side effect of other pills, but it's undeniable when it happens.
Some people have messed up bodies.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome seems to be an autoimmune condition. Its cause is not known yet. I wouldn't be surprised if extreme stress or PTSD is a a factor. Stress is also a factor in fibromyalgia as is is Epstein Barr's. That is not to say some people exaggerate the symptoms and their disability. IBS is similar, a condition that can be debilitating where stress and an overactive immune system. I think a lot of these conditions are more prevalent in people who had abusive and traumatic childhoods.

Yes, and socioeconomic class is a big factor too. You never hear about any low-income minority women with fibromyalgia. It's always a fat white suburban frau who doesn't have to work, and can afford a housekeeper and nanny to take care of her brats while she cradles a mug.

R104 - it's not just plain-old Dunning-Kruger. (Which is endemic in America...every stupid person assumes they are smart.). It's that everyone seems to think they are an expert on any subject they are confronted with. It's like a flavor of Dunning-Kruger. Disability provides almost no income for people, and if they're married, they likely won't get any at all. I don't understand this weird idea that people will live like kings if they just fake POTS.
POTS, which you said was fake, has plenty of measurable symptoms and testing to determine whether someone has it or not, by the way.
