[quote]Lactose intolerance.

Possibly the stupidest thing I've ever seen here. Lactose intolerance is very real. It affects most of the world who didn't adapt as well to dairy over the centuries as Northern Europeans. My parents and I are LC. Both my children are, to different degrees. I can drink some milk but if I drink too much, I'm off the the bathroom. My children didn't tolerate milk-based formula but we better with soy. Again, no one in our family had to swear off milk, but we all have low tolerance.

R28 Starting a few years ago I got awful joint pain and I didn't know why. It just kept getting worse. I assumed I was getting arthritic. Then a few months ago I took advice from a friend and stopped eating gluten. Poof pain disappeared. I can eat about half a slice of toast before I start getting joint pain so it's not too severe.

Exhaustion

by Anonymousreply 56April 17, 2021 3:22 AM

R12 is correct. Restless Leg Syndrome isn't a syndrome, but is a real syndrome. In my case I spent about two years dependent upon diphenhydramine (benadryl) and melatonin to get to sleep. Excess both of these can cause a horrible electrical crawling sensation in the legs when taken long term. I had a week of horrible, sleepless nights when I stopped taking them, but my issues with restless leg syndrome mostly went away afterward. I still get it occasionally, especially when I am stressed. I think it is more of a psychological issue now, but it was definitely caused by my abuse of antihistamines and melatonin.

Restless leg syndrome is fake? Why? and why would anyone fake it? I don't have it, but it seems real and relatively harmless, just uncomfortable.

Everything IS in our heads, were are starting to realize it, but the physical symptoms and manifestion of illness and disease is real. We think about it and feel it in our heads. We feel pain in our brain. Stress makes us sick.

Not everything is like a fucking broken leg or brain cancer (which is also literally in our heads).

by Anonymousreply 63April 17, 2021 5:16 AM

r48 Inflammation. Those diseases are real. They are starting to figure some of it out, but like RA arthritis. Dad is stressed, high strung guy? Always busy kinda guy? Anxious? Inflammation results. Half the world is addicted to ibuprofen. He's not crazy, it's super common and not fake.

[quote]None of these are fake

Dataloungers are notoriously ill-informed when it comes to medical issues. A couple years ago it got to the point where you'd see multiple comments in threads on medical topics along the lines of, "I don't care WHAT that peer-reviewed paper says, I think lupus is FAKE" and they were serious.

Older DLers who don't want to admit the forum has gone to shit will claim this is all trolling and pointless bitchery, but if you've been here for any length of time, you've seen the low-key medical advice threads with actively dangerous and stupid advice accepted as truth, so you know this isn't just people having a laugh.

by Anonymousreply 93April 17, 2021 4:01 PM

Ugh, no it doesn't R87 - it was late when I wrote that. I meant that it isn't a real syndrome, but it is a real SYMPTOM.

by Anonymousreply 94April 17, 2021 4:06 PM

That's okay r94, you linked to R12 who said "symptom" so it was clear what you meant.

by Anonymousreply 95April 17, 2021 4:15 PM

I think lupus is real however I'm not convinced that fibromyalgia is mainly because everyone I've ever met who claims to have it is a fat, middle-aged woman who resents having to work and would use their flare ups to get out of doing work or other unpleasant duties.

Also, too many mothers pretending their kids are allergic to everything. My step-brother is married to a woman who loves hauling their two sons to the doctor at the hint of a sneeze and dosing them with every kind of drug, convinced they are allergic to things. Those kids spend their childhood drugged up with dark shadows under their eyes and lethargic or running around hyped up depending on what she's got them on.

by Anonymousreply 96April 17, 2021 4:15 PM

[quote]I'm not convinced that fibromyalgia is mainly because everyone I've ever met who claims to have it is a fat, middle-aged woman who resents having to work and would use their flare ups to get out of doing work or other unpleasant duties

It occurs at a rate of about 2% of the population. You'd have to know 200 people to know even TWO people who fit this description, let alone a whole slew of them, as you're implying.

[quote]a woman who loves hauling their two sons to the doctor at the hint of a sneeze and dosing them with every kind of drug, convinced they are allergic to things. Those kids spend their childhood drugged up with dark shadows under their eyes and lethargic or running around hyped up depending on what she's got them on.

So you're saying that their doctor prescribes handfuls of unneeded medications to kids and is doing them serious harm? Why have you not reported him to the authorities?

by Anonymousreply 97April 17, 2021 4:19 PM

R97, you are babbling. What I said was I've met many women who fit what I described. My point was they didn't really have fibro but they used it.

How should I know what doctors she takes them to? She has several. All I'm saying is that the kids are not as allergic to stuff as she wants them to be. She's a hypochondriac and making her kids follow her path.

You really should lighten up though.

by Anonymousreply 98April 17, 2021 4:29 PM

What's that thing where a person is compelled to make pronouncements about subjects they have little or no knowledge about simply because they imagine they're some kind of expert?

by Anonymousreply 99April 17, 2021 5:00 PM

I don't think anyone thinks they are an expert but everyone has an opinion R99. Hopefully, most opinions are based on personal experience. People like R97 are far more annoying.

by Anonymousreply 100April 17, 2021 5:08 PM

Fibromyalgia = tired and achy at the thought of having to work for a living.

by Anonymousreply 101April 17, 2021 5:17 PM

Most of these, I agree with. I've noticed that a lot of "symptoms" are in direct relation to what their health insurance is willing to pay for. Bad or no insurance tends to lessen the severity of the psychosomatic disorders.

by Anonymousreply 102April 17, 2021 5:18 PM

[quote]What's that thing where a person is compelled to make pronouncements about subjects they have little or no knowledge about simply because they imagine they're some kind of expert?

I've heard it referred to as OSAF (Opinion Stated As Fact).

The Dunning-Kruger effect , r99.

by Anonymousreply 104April 17, 2021 6:21 PM

R82, I didn’t say it was FAKE, but that hypochondriac women CLAIM they have it.

I know it’s real.

by Anonymousreply 105April 17, 2021 7:47 PM

It's not that we don't think this conditions are real. It's that we recognize that for legions of "Bunikas" (grasping their remaining spoons), these conditions are a way to get disability/benefits and entry into disability blogging.

This is due to many of these conditions not having a definitive lab result/finding demonstrating unequivocally the presence of the disease, and aslo having "non specific symptoms" that occur with many disease states.

-Doctor who has done many disability chart reviews

by Anonymousreply 106April 17, 2021 9:04 PM

I read once that a lot of medical personnel automatically think "hypochondriac" when people complain of fibromyalgia. It may have been a nurse who posted here.

by Anonymousreply 107April 17, 2021 9:06 PM

I don’t know if it’s a ‘syndrome’ but many people get dry eyes as they get older. It’s not a big deal, it just means I have to use drops several times a day and ointment at night. But it’s certainly real.

by Anonymousreply 108April 17, 2021 9:10 PM

Hey now R59

I have TMJ, it is not fun. My jaw locks pretty easy (like when I yawn, and people find it hard to eat with me because it sounds like someone cracking their knuckles when I chew (some days eating just sucks). It’s not fun

by Anonymousreply 109April 17, 2021 9:14 PM

Restless Leg Syndrome is not fake. I have it sometimes. It started before I started taking benadryl, but I do take lots of other pills for real things (transplant, high blood pressure), and psychiatric things (nervous disorders). So yes, the Restless Legs could be a side effect of other pills, but it's undeniable when it happens.

Some people have messed up bodies.

by Anonymousreply 110April 17, 2021 9:42 PM

Could someone describe RLS to me? I think I have it. Sometimes at night when I am in bed I keep having this annoying urge to stretch my legs because there's like a nervous, uncomfortable feeling in my legs.

by Anonymousreply 111April 17, 2021 9:44 PM

Same@111. I have a dull ache in my legs. Precovid, I would use cardio machines and weights at the gym to get rid of it.

by Anonymousreply 112April 17, 2021 9:49 PM

Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease. One of its most common symptoms is very dry eyes. Also older people are prone to dry eyes and have to use artificial tears.

God, I hope that’s it.

by Anonymousreply 117April 17, 2021 10:01 PM

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome seems to be an autoimmune condition. Its cause is not known yet. I wouldn't be surprised if extreme stress or PTSD is a a factor. Stress is also a factor in fibromyalgia as is is Epstein Barr's. That is not to say some people exaggerate the symptoms and their disability. IBS is similar, a condition that can be debilitating where stress and an overactive immune system. I think a lot of these conditions are more prevalent in people who had abusive and traumatic childhoods.

R111 and R112 that is how Restless Leg feels. Like you weirdly have to move. Sometimes I kick my legs when I'm really going crazy from it. Others have said zapping. I guess there is that component to it as well, but mostly I feel this weird uncomfortable sensation that I have to move my legs.

Yes, and socioeconomic class is a big factor too. You never hear about any low-income minority women with fibromyalgia. It's always a fat white suburban frau who doesn't have to work, and can afford a housekeeper and nanny to take care of her brats while she cradles a mug.

by Anonymousreply 124April 18, 2021 1:35 AM

My mom has had all of them, from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to Lupus to Hypoglycemia to everything else. A lot of them are just used by hypochondriacs like her to attract attention. One of her doctors told her, "Margaret, you don't HAVE to have lupus".

by Anonymousreply 125April 18, 2021 1:36 AM

R104 - it's not just plain-old Dunning-Kruger. (Which is endemic in America...every stupid person assumes they are smart.). It's that everyone seems to think they are an expert on any subject they are confronted with. It's like a flavor of Dunning-Kruger. The inability to say "I don't know about that" seems to be some kind of mental deficiency that has invaded our society.

by Anonymousreply 126April 18, 2021 1:47 AM

Perhaps that's a byproduct of the internet and having instant information, true or otherwise R126. Something to think about.

You're right, it should be four, but none of the Datalounger stories about knowing tons of women who lie about their illnesses are true R129. We get these anecdotes in every thread and they're not remotely convincing. I wouldn't believe anyone who told me they knew four separate women who lied about fibromyalgia simply because they didn't want to have to work. What are the odds?

by Anonymousreply 131April 18, 2021 2:38 PM

[quote]The inability to say "I don't know about that" seems to be some kind of mental deficiency that has invaded our society.

It's been a while but I remember once saying I didn't know some detail about a situation, and someone replied "never admit that, make something up instead" and they sounded completely earnest, like they were giving me solid life advice.

by Anonymousreply 132April 18, 2021 2:40 PM

[quote]these conditions are a way to get disability/benefits

Disability provides almost no income for people, and if they're married, they likely won't get any at all. I don't understand this weird idea that people will live like kings if they just fake POTS.

POTS, which you said was fake, has plenty of measurable symptoms and testing to determine whether someone has it or not, by the way.

by Anonymousreply 133April 18, 2021 2:43 PM

I know some one with fibromyalgia, low income, no health insurance so she has nothing to gain by faking it. And she does work as and when she can.

I'm sure people use/ abuse it to fake it, but it is a real thing

R1 I have also personally had bronchitis triggered by somebodys cigarette smoke, happened years ago. Thank fuck smoking in public is regarded as trashy now, havent had issues caused by it in years

The compulsion to repost threads on DL that have been done to death over and over ... oh wait, that one's real.
