Damian Lewis is 50 r11. She was only two years older than him.

This is really sad. I wonder how long she'd had cancer? Lovely woman and a fantastic actress.

Just a year ago...

she was on TV with the husband just a month ago. she looked OK I suppose, not sickly or very thin like cancer patients.

If there was ever a woman that I (a gay man) could possibly have a one-niter with, it would have been Helen McCrory.

There was something special about her.

Here she is last month - wearing what I assume is a wig and noticeably hoarse. Could have been lung or oesophageal cancer?

Probably lung cancer, she was a smoker.

Wow. She played some real badass characters. I usually forget Doctor Who guest stars fairly quickly, but her episode (Vampires in Venice) I still remember.

If this is the most recent footage, I think there was a noticeable difference from the Youtube interview linked above.

So sad to hear this. I really enjoyed her in everything I ever saw her in and she was always able to elevate even so-so material. If you're a fan, you should definitely check out the series Fearless. It was fantastic as was her performance.

Sad news, but the tweet announcing the “death of the woman that is Helen McCrory” is driving me crazy.

During lockdown I absolutely loved her appearance on Desert Island Discs. In fact I’ll be listening again this afternoon. Such great stories from a remarkable woman.

I love the way she swatted that awful TV host with "No, I have children."

This is such a sad news. I just watched that GMB video and realized she was gravely ill there but still tried to lend support to the charity. What a generous and selfless soul.

Always brilliant. She had occupied a great niche in playing sexy, older villainesses, as in Harry Potter, Doctor Who and Penny Dreadful. Michelle Gomez will have to step up now.

I loved her on Penny Dreadful. Great actress. I am surprised she was only 52. She seemed older than that, to me.

I listened not long after it aired and wondered if it was mistitled because her voice was so different. She sounded like a 12 pack a day smoker, much different than how she sounds on Peaky Blinder. I assume it was due to her ilness.

PEAKY BLINDER recently wrapped its final season. I assume she was still working.

R20 I'm guessing lung cancer. She was a life long smoker and sadly by the time you detect lung cancer it's usually too late.

How sad and strange. Just the other day she popped into my head for that wonderful speech she gives in Penny Dreadful with the line "coiled together like adders on the sands of Egypt, like hawks over Golgatha..." repeating over and over in my mind for days.

R35, I doubt she worked the final season of Peaky Blinders. Damian Lewis had production of Billions pushed by several months so he could be with her. Her cancer wasn’t a sudden affliction.

Is Helen part of the Prince Philip "threesome"? Or is there a new "celebrity death comes in three"?

She was an amazing actor.

I first noticed her in The Fragile Heart in the mid 90s where she played an unpleasant student doctor who who was the daughter of eminent surgeon Nigel Hawthorne. He won a BAFTA for it, she deserved one.

She was also great in North Square, a legal drama from Peter Moffat who went on to write Silk and Your Honor. She was unforgettable as a barrister returning to her legal job not long after having a baby.

And then there was Charlotte Grey, where she had a tiny part opposite Cate Blanchett but what a fucking impact.

Sadly I couldn't watch her in MotherFatherSon with Richard Gere, it was so fucking terrible.

She was superb in the National Theater Live production of Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea. Watch it when it becomes available.

The first time I saw her I thought "here's the actress who could play the very troubled but talented Rachel Roberts if someone wanted to do a bio drama."

McCrory was an actress who could make her presence felt by doing very little.

So young to develop a smoking related cancer - if that is indeed what it was. How sad - so young. I smoked for 10 years and these stories always give me such anxiety - altho I know it’s extremely rare to develop at that age, even for current or former smokers. Sad for her and for her family.

RIP! 52 is too young!

There's a great quality version of The Deep Blue Sea and Medea on torrent sites. The NT live showed of their productions on YouTube during the first lockdown.

The Last Of The Hausmans was also shown as part of the NT Live season but wasn't of enough interest to find its way to torrenting.
