How much do you tip your Uber driver?

Off a $7 ride I usually tip $1 but my friend said I am cheap and should tip $2

by Anonymousreply 47July 8, 2021 5:21 AM

Bullshit, round up to 10 or 12 bucks.

by Anonymousreply 1April 14, 2021 11:10 PM

You are fucking cheap. This is frontline work in an epidemic and you give the guy 15%? I’d give at least 20-25%

by Anonymousreply 2April 14, 2021 11:22 PM

I would consider a nurse or doctor a frontline worker, not a cab driver you fucking loon.

by Anonymousreply 3April 15, 2021 12:46 AM

I offer oral, and if they decline. $2.

by Anonymousreply 4April 15, 2021 1:18 AM

I thought the selling point on Uber was that you didn't have to tip. I know Lyft encourages tipping, but Uber?

by Anonymousreply 5April 15, 2021 1:46 AM

R5 and OP are a bunch of cheapskates. Do you know how much Uber drivers are making off of the trip total? I've talked to a few - sometimes it's about 30%.

If you tipped a taxi, tip your Uber driver. Even better - pay them in cash so it's under the table.

by Anonymousreply 6April 15, 2021 1:51 AM

ZERO, I have never tipped on an Uber ride.

by Anonymousreply 7April 15, 2021 2:17 AM

R7 - you're an asshole then.

by Anonymousreply 8April 15, 2021 2:28 AM

How far is a $7 ride?

by Anonymousreply 9April 15, 2021 2:34 AM

Tipping is out of control - everyone expects it now. It’s pushed me to be less generous because everyone wants a tip. During the prime of pandemic maybe - but now it’s just obscene.

by Anonymousreply 10April 15, 2021 3:10 AM

R9 : probably a 3 minute drive tops.

by Anonymousreply 11April 15, 2021 3:29 AM

Uber's prices have nearly doubled where I live.

by Anonymousreply 12April 15, 2021 3:31 AM

Unless they are rude, I tip 25% - huge convenience for me to not drive. I have to think about their time, wear and tear on their car, and my own laziness.

by Anonymousreply 13April 15, 2021 3:33 AM

I only tip if I'm not forced to listen to their shitty music.

by Anonymousreply 14April 15, 2021 3:34 AM

I thought the tip was built into the fare?

by Anonymousreply 15April 15, 2021 6:15 AM

Former Uber driver here. The trip is not built into the fare. Uber drivers during a pandemic are absolutely frontline workers. If you need a ride and they're risking their lives to give you that ride, take that into consideration. The biggest deal is Uber drivers are paying for their own gas. Plus, they're paying Uber. I'd say I got tipped about 15% of the time and it was much appreciated when it happened. $20 is nice, esp when I help you with your suitcase(s). I once drove James Harden and he didn't tip me at all. I drove some lesser known NBA players that did tip me. All in all, I drove 10 hours a night and made $200 including tips BUT I had to pay $40 for gas. Plus, l'm paying extra for car insurance. And I have to have to get the car regularly cleaned so that it looks nice for you. I also have to change the oil and bring it in for maintenance more often. Also, flat tires are a part of the business and that costs money. Another thing to take into consideration is tolls. At one point, I was driving in New Jersey and that brought another expense. Yes, you pay your tolls when you pay Uber but I'm paying tolls to get to you and I'm paying tolls to get home to NYC. So now you're talking about only making $115 for 10 hours of driving. BEFORE taxes. So there. Something to think about.

by Anonymousreply 16April 15, 2021 6:29 AM

I've never tipped anyone less than 20% and if that's not at least $5.00, I tip 5.

Although a friend of mine, woman, yelled at me once because I tipped a server well who was rude to us. It was force of habit.

by Anonymousreply 17April 15, 2021 6:38 AM

I will confess to early on using Uber over Lyft because you COULDN'T tip Uber drivers, so I assumed that meant they were paid a living wage and didn't need to rely on tips (and that also saved me money). And the price differential between Uber and Lyft was negligible at that time, but Lyft had the tip option, so I figured they weren't getting paid as much. Of course now I know better.

These days I tend to stick with Lyft (though before I have to take a trip, I will price compare) because I like the company better and I like the drivers better. I know many drive for both companies, but I usually ask when I'm in the car (if we're chatting to begin with) and I have found several who won't drive for Uber. I don't use them much, anyway, mostly to and from the airport in Los Angeles. And I haven't used them once since COVID, but I have my own car.

by Anonymousreply 18April 15, 2021 6:03 PM

I always tip 20%. It is still half the cost of a cab.

by Anonymousreply 19April 15, 2021 6:10 PM

A 20% or so tip is certainly sufficient. $1.50 on a $7.00 ride is more than appropriate. Anyone who says "round it up to $10-12" is someone who will die old and broke one day.

by Anonymousreply 20April 15, 2021 6:23 PM

20% rounded up to nearest dollar, like everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 21April 15, 2021 6:28 PM

Gays are know to be insanely generous tippers - as evidenced here. Not sure that’s a good thing - do we need to prove our worth by being big tippers. Why are we so much nicer than any other group - intimidated?

by Anonymousreply 22April 15, 2021 8:14 PM

[quote] Gays are know to be insanely generous tippers - as evidenced here.

ROFL! You don't actually believe this pack of posers do you? Most of them making their claims of being huge tippers are actually people on the receiving end of tips, not the giving end.

by Anonymousreply 23April 15, 2021 8:24 PM

R18, opposite here. I only used Lyft because Uber's app didn't include tipping and I didn't want to deal with cash and the whole awkward tipping process. When Uber's app included tipping, I started using it as a backup to Lyft.

I usually tip 15-20% with a $2 minimum.

by Anonymousreply 24April 15, 2021 8:27 PM

I always carry cash now, and have several 5 dollar bills as my almost minimum tip. My 89 year old mom uses Uber (it's on my credit card, lol) and I've instructed her to tip a minimum of $3, up to $5 each because they have to assist her and her rolling walker. I want the regulars drivers to be use to this, so they continue to give exceptional service.

I tip every everyone. I will put say 10-15% on the credit bill, and give $5 or more cash when I arrive. I even tip the Popeyes counter worker who gets my mobile order quickly.

I have also randomly send 2 Large Dominoes Pizzas to different fast foods places that are either very efficient and courteous, or maybe so busy they can't see straight.

I spread joy and happiness. What's in YOUR wallet?

by Anonymousreply 25April 15, 2021 8:31 PM

Go to uberpeople and you'll read what gays REALLY tip, not what they claim on this bullshit site.

Oh, I also forgot to add that I tend to use Lyft more because I have a better rating on it. I have something like a 4.4 on Uber and a 4.9 on Lyft. I have no idea why Uber is so much lower. I have never had an issue with a driver on either service. I've had some that were less pleasant than others and some that played music too loud, but nothing so bad that I've felt the need to say anything or report it. And I always tip.

Someone told me that drivers can look at the rider's rating and decide if they want to pick them up, so I worry that I'll have to wait longer with Uber so I tend to favor Lyft. But I honestly have no idea why my rating is so much lower on Uber.

by Anonymousreply 27April 15, 2021 9:20 PM

[quote] Why are we so much nicer than any other group - intimidated?

R22 What a weird stretch. It could be that some of us are just nice. In the case of Uber, specifically, one doesn't tip until the ride is complete, and you're likely quite separated from the driver, dumbass.

by Anonymousreply 28April 16, 2021 1:24 AM

Tipping is it of control, should we start tipping the doctor and dentist too?

by Anonymousreply 29April 16, 2021 3:34 AM

You all need to wake the fuck up — people are hurting, are you fucking blind?

I wouldn’t give a driver less than $5, and I guarantee you I would debate that in my head out of sheer guilt. Every tip should be 25%. If you can’t afford that, then you can’t afford the service, period, end of. Yes, tipping is crazy out if control, but that is precisely because people are no longer paid a living wage.

And to those who think these drivers aren’t frontline? You’re an idiot. It doesn’t get more frontline than helping with mass transit, your ignorance to their plight is offensive. People like you need to be thrown into public housing for a year. Take your head out of your own ass.

by Anonymousreply 30April 16, 2021 3:47 AM

Rides are very expensive in CA now because drivers have new benefits. Prices have doubled or worse.

by Anonymousreply 31April 16, 2021 3:53 AM

R27, I checked my ratings after reading your post--never have before. I'm a 5 on Lyft but only a 4.33 on Uber. I usually use Lyft.

by Anonymousreply 32April 17, 2021 11:51 PM

You could just make it 10? You are cheap. I loathe cheap people

by Anonymousreply 33April 17, 2021 11:54 PM

That's right, all of you lavish tippers telling OP to tip 40%, individual Americans should definitely overpay to prop up those poor corporations who pay their workers chickenshit. I'd give the guy a buck and a pamphlet about not working for asshole corporations like Uber.

by Anonymousreply 34April 17, 2021 11:54 PM

Asshole at r34- if Uber is an asshole corporation, than why are you using them? You're gonna take advantage of a driver and then lecture him?

by Anonymousreply 35April 21, 2021 7:50 AM

The minimum you will tip (for example being Uber’ed to your next door neighbor 35 feet away) is $5 and that’s being a cheap cunt. I can only hope the queens tipping $1 are trolling me. It’s working. Are you fucking serious??? Stay the hell home, you low rent white trash whores.

Growing up without a car in the city there was always taxi etiquette. You didn’t call a cab unless you had tip money. Otherwise, we walked or took the subway. The hell is wrong with some of you people? It’s like the only people who respect the service industry are the poor working class. Shame on you bougie fucks.

by Anonymousreply 36April 21, 2021 8:45 AM

I never tip Uber drivers. I didn’t know I was supposed to.

by Anonymousreply 37April 21, 2021 9:01 AM

I don't use Uber. It's a fascist corporation that killed off one of the few entry level jobs (with protections) new immigrants could get. I knew a bitch who was making a decent living but drove for Uber "so I can afford a Vera Wang wedding dress." Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 38April 21, 2021 9:41 AM

R38 That is how it should be. Uber is supposed to supplement income NOT be a full time job.

Uber helped to make transport a lot easier for people. Taxi companies were making a killing and made life a lot harder for people living in cities that were not New York. My mother cannot drive and the bus service in our home town was horrible. Uber has made it so that she can go to so many more places. That was impossible before when the one taxi company in town was charging so much.

by Anonymousreply 39April 21, 2021 2:51 PM

[quote]Stay the hell home, you low rent white trash whores.

Those are not the people that don't tip

by Anonymousreply 40May 7, 2021 12:24 AM

I always tip and it's usually for local trips that cost me around $10 each way. I tip $5 every time because I opt to use Lyft or Uber when I know I might be drinking. That $15 is well worth the peace of mind knowing that I don't have to worry about getting a DUI.

by Anonymousreply 41May 7, 2021 1:01 AM

Do people really think tipping 50% is normal? Gays are way too generous.

by Anonymousreply 42May 9, 2021 3:32 AM

I have never tipped an Uber driver, never even crossed my mind to do so.

by Anonymousreply 43May 12, 2021 3:03 AM

Fuck tipping. Uber already conveniently removed themselves from every known employment responsibility known to man, now you have to pay their wages directly too? Tips don't get taxed. These people are going to be using up your Medicare for their triple-bypasses and hip replacements that they never contributed to because you guilted yourself into running a damn business without any of the perks.

by Anonymousreply 44May 12, 2021 3:11 AM

[quote] Every tip should be 25%. If you can’t afford that, then you can’t afford the service, period, end of.

FINITO! THE END! YOU HAVE SPOKEN! OURS IS NOT TO QUESTION WHY, OURS IS BUT TO DO OR DIE!

by Anonymousreply 45May 12, 2021 3:14 AM

Guys, anybody has experience using Uber in Europe ? I'm in the USA and going on a trip soon

by Anonymousreply 46July 8, 2021 5:17 AM

I'm the $5 tipper on the $10 ride. I have friends who were down on their luck and had to start driving for Lyft and Uber to stay afloat. I know what a crappy job it can be and my friend said most people didn't tip her at all. She had to kick one guy out for fighting and a few more that were drunk she was worried they were going to puke all over. She did have a very nice transwoman who bought her tacos once, so there's that.
