What are your fav movies with black actors/actresses?

Looking for recommendations. Don’t have to be “great” films. Plain old fun movies are fine, too. I love Boomerang, Waiting to Exhale, and Hidden Figures.

by Anonymousreply 109April 20, 2021 6:00 PM

I love Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, both directed by Barry Jenkins.

by Anonymousreply 1April 14, 2021 10:03 PM

Oh, I loved Moonlight, too! (I’m OP.) haven’t seen Beale Street yet.

"Nothing but a Man" (1964) is an interesting period piece, with excellent acting.

I really liked Black KKKlansman and most of Spike Lee’s work, actually. Do the Right Thing is his best.

by Anonymousreply 11April 14, 2021 10:35 PM

I second Coming to America, that movie is fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 12April 14, 2021 10:36 PM

Tales From the Hood. Sounds potentially cheesy, I know, but it's one of the best horror anthology films since the British Amicus movies and Creepshow.

by Anonymousreply 13April 14, 2021 10:38 PM

Claudine. Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones were everything in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 14April 14, 2021 10:39 PM

I really enjoyed “This Christmas.” It’s got a great cast, too — Idris Elba, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, for starters.

by Anonymousreply 20April 14, 2021 10:48 PM

R20 Gone with the Wind is a controversial choice, but I agree. Mammy was a complex and well drawn character. Her relationship with Scarlett, Rhett, and Melanie feels authentic for the time.

by Anonymousreply 21April 14, 2021 11:11 PM

I love The Color Purple.

Flat out.

by Anonymousreply 22April 14, 2021 11:16 PM

Good call, formerBHmanny. I wish Spielberg had a better editor to protect him from his excesses but I still love the move.

R21 - Is GWTW a controversial choice for a favorite movie? I can see why people have problems with some of it and why it wouldn't be some people's favorite, but it's a great story about a woman's struggle and realizing the consequences of her actions. It's a great drama.

I hated "Waiting to Exhale (Shoop Shoop) " with Whitney's wooden acting, Angela chewing the scenery with her usual overacting and Terry McMillan's pedestrian script.

by Anonymousreply 43April 16, 2021 5:27 AM

Hidden Figures was a fun and interesting movie though.

by Anonymousreply 44April 16, 2021 5:28 AM

Jason's Lyric - Allen Payne was so fucking sexy and Jada in one of her early roles.

Lady Sings the Blues - Diana Ross was fantastic in this, as was Richard Pryor

Sparkle - Lonette McKee was absolutely stunning in this film. Should have been nominated for an Oscar. ed -

Beloved - it's better known as Oprah's flop film but there's a lot to admire about this film -- the cast, Rachel Portman's beautiful score, the cinematography.

by Anonymousreply 45April 16, 2021 5:34 AM

I'll double down on my vote for The Color Purple.

I do agree there was too much sugar but the film holds up.

I am surprised Precious hasn't been mentioned. Hard to watch. Very well done.

The above is the only time I had any hope for JLo. Besides The Cell, she never came up with much.

and P.S. her sexy stuff is hanging by a thread.

Chiwetel Ejiofor was one of the leads in Melinda and Melinda, which was actually a very enjoyable film from what I remember.

He was also great in Inside Man, for which Jodie Foster deserved every supporting nomination going.

Flirting with Thandiwe Newton was great, with Nicola Kidman in one of her earliest roles as the head girl in a boarding school. Thandiwe Newton didn't have a great time on set, she was 16 and in an abusive relationshiop with the director, but she was so good in it.

by Anonymousreply 52April 17, 2021 7:42 PM

Someone mentioned Whoopi Goldberg in Jumpin' Jack Flash. I loved her late '80s comedies. They didn't do very well but I still love watching JJF, Burglar and Fatal Beauty.

Fear of a Black Hat, funny movie about rap and hip-hop. The director Rusty Cundieff was easy on the eyes. Rusty was also an actor, Not sure what he looks like now, but he was attractive.

What I liked about Scatman Crothers' character in The Shining is that he was obviously meant to be the "magical Negro" trope (which I believe comes from the book) and he was the guy who believed in "the shining" supernatural stuff, but he was also the only normal, sensible, level-headed adult in the whole film.

Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, starring Cicely Tyson. It was a tv movie but if it had been a theater release then she should’ve won an Oscar for her amazing performance. I had read the novel in 4th grade and did a book report on it in 1989. I didn’t know an old’70s tv movie based on the novel existed. Managed to catch the movie one afternoon on tv years later. Very faithful to the novel and Tyson played the character from teen years to elderly.
