What a tragic, sad, and lonely end for a once-great figure.

He sure did, R5. He capitalized on the trust of others and wiped out their bank accounts. Period.

The Madoff story is a modern Shakespearean tragedy. The Widow Madoff stands alone. She must be one tough cookie.

IDK, R18- any person that invests and see's HUGE profits will be happy and invest more. If that is greed, 100 percent of all investors are greedy. Or, humans...really.

by Anonymousreply 37April 14, 2021 2:11 PM

from article at R30:

[quote]Among Madoff’s investors were European hedge funds, elderly retirees and a range of nonprofits. Among his victims were some of the most prominent Jewish institutions in the country, as well as Jewish celebrities like Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel and Sandy Koufax, the Hall-of-Fame pitcher.

[quote]Madoff’s investors included Yeshiva University, elite Orthodox Jewish day schools in New York and Boston, Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, and other Jewish organizations and family foundations.

[quote]Many of those investors had met Madoff through the small world of Jewish philanthropy in New York and south Florida, and placed their money with his fund via friends of his such as Jeffrey Picower and J. Ezra Merkin, who operated hedge funds that invested heavily with Madoff. Merkin, a former president of the elite Fifth Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan, directed perhaps $1 billion of congregants’ money to Madoff, according to the New York Times.

[quote]So when Madoff, facing increasing pressure due to a national financial crisis, confessed his crime in 2008, the effects were felt across American Jewry. Following the confession, the Jewish Funders Network, which convenes Jewish donors, brought together 35 of the largest Jewish foundations to create a plan to provide emergency funding to some of Madoff’s victims.

[quote]Around that time, the Anti-Defamation League also documented an uptick in anti-Semitism that it concluded stemmed from the news of Madoff’s fraud.

Not a fan of the Kardashians but have they really ripped people off? Their products might suck but the people who buy them want them. I recall the three Kardi sisters cancelling a contract for a Kardi Visa card because it's policies were usurious and unfair. They might be venal and attention whores but I don't think they can be compared to Madoff, Trump, et al.

Newer info says that over 80% of the lost money has been recovered:

"The MVF .received over 65,000 petitions from victims in 136 countries. “With the $488 mil. distributed today, the dept has now returned almost $3.2 billion to Madoff's victims, allowing them to recover more than 80% of what they lost,” said Act. Asst. Atty Gnrl Brian C. 12/2020

They think they can get it to over 90%. So not the worst ending but people thought they'd lost everything and won't be getting profits.

by Anonymousreply 50April 14, 2021 2:33 PM

It's good they are getting that large percentage of their investment back, but there is still loss of principle, as well as interest earnings they would have accrued. However, in these intervening years, a lot of people have had to sell real property and down size dramatically, as well liquidate other personal property.

Granted, not a one of them ended up in a housing project. But these years have been wrenching.

Dog whistle anti-semitism, because his “clients” were mostly Jewish. No, it’s not “greedy” to invest in the hopes of making a profit. It’s human nature, and actually necessary for survival.

R40, the Kardashians may not have stolen people's money the way Madoff did, true. What they have done though, is cheapen the value of fame and stardom. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I think it's contributed to the coarsening of our culture, though the fat ass, other implants, tight clothes and mind-numbing missed priorities helped too.

So yeah, I think we'd be better off without them.

Sorry, R61, that's not anti-semitism, that's greed, pure and simple. Most of these people had substantial dollars to invest, and they were well-aware of the rates of return that they could normally expect. So when Bernie comes along, and offers many multiples of that return, and never has a losing year, even in a down-turned market, then you absolutely know that something's fishy, but because your statement shows you making money, you choose to turn a blind eye. Definitional greed, pure and simple, for most of those investors.

by Anonymousreply 67April 14, 2021 4:33 PM

To raise badly needed funds, Ruth Madoff will be hosting a "Weekend At Bernie's" at her modest Connecticut residence. Please wear a mask.

by Anonymousreply 68April 14, 2021 4:34 PM

Yes, R68. It's gonna be a blast.

But be to sure to BYOB.

by Anonymousreply 69April 14, 2021 4:36 PM

His tombstone will be shaped like a ponzi pyramid.

by Anonymousreply 70April 14, 2021 4:36 PM

I once read an anecdote- don't know if it's true- that he was buying-up all the hot chocolate packets in the prison store and reselling them at a higher price to inmates.

by Anonymousreply 71April 14, 2021 4:40 PM

"I remember reading that he was well-liked by the other inmates in prison. Or I could have made that up. "

Yes, with some cellmates he was able to double their allotment of bread and water. Those who came in late are reduced to crackers no water

by Anonymousreply 72April 14, 2021 4:52 PM

I think he had big ideas and was a mover and shaker (albeit not a brash one) since he was a young man. And got caught up in his doings because he enjoyed the high of what he created and what he could do. What he did was behind the pale and he deserved his punishment, but I don’t feel his core was evil.

I do think that Trump, Graham, Crawley, Koch, and others of their ilk are truly evil and mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 73April 14, 2021 4:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 74April 14, 2021 5:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 75April 14, 2021 5:08 PM

Con artists are all the same. Charm, wit, friendly, "charismatic". If you meet one, run.

by Anonymousreply 76April 14, 2021 5:11 PM

I’m curious why Plump never pardoned him. Two peas in a pod.

by Anonymousreply 77April 14, 2021 5:11 PM

She never divorced him, although she allegedly cut ties with him after both the sons were dead. You'll never convince me she didn't know what was happening.

by Anonymousreply 78April 14, 2021 5:12 PM

[quote] So when Bernie comes along, and offers many multiples of that return, and never has a losing year, even in a down-turned market, then you absolutely know that something's fishy, but because your statement shows you making money,

Funny then that even the SEC didn’t “know” that. Screaming GREED about investors who were mostly Jewish is absolutely dog whistle behavior.

by Anonymousreply 79April 14, 2021 5:29 PM

Ruth worked as his bookkeeper for a while, apparently, and said she tried to commit suicide along with Bernie when it first came out. That does give me pause although a financial crime like this would be easy to hide from a spouse if you don't tell them and they don't have access to the accounts. I'd like to know if he was doing it when she was his bookkeeper.

by Anonymousreply 80April 14, 2021 5:32 PM

R72: some of the more impressionable inmates were apparently in awe of him and the extent of his criminal history.

by Anonymousreply 81April 14, 2021 5:43 PM

R61 thinks Jews are greedy. Hmm.

Greed is universal.

by Anonymousreply 82April 14, 2021 5:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 84April 14, 2021 5:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 85April 14, 2021 6:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 87April 14, 2021 6:41 PM

When he admitted to his sons and Ruth what he had done he asked his sons to give him 24 hours to get his affairs in order. They didn't and called the cops right away. They say neither of the 2 sons ever spoke to him again after he was arrested. And we all know what happened to them. Mark hung himself with a dog leash from a pipe in the ceiling of his living room while his 2 year old was asleep in his crib. And Matthew died of cancer. What a sad sad story.

by Anonymousreply 88April 14, 2021 6:42 PM

Ruthie outlived and outcunted them all

by Anonymousreply 89April 14, 2021 6:44 PM

I’ll be honest, I think it’s gross that Bernie is so vilified more than actual mass murderers. I think that in and of itself speaks to people’s greed. Yes, he was horrible and belonged behind bars. But the wailing and gnashing of teeth is way over the top. It’s fucking money, he is a criminal but not satan.

by Anonymousreply 90April 14, 2021 7:03 PM

i want to add that he is so villified bc he stole from the wealthy. And yes, yes I know not all his investors were wealthy. But he stole heavily from the 1% and that is why we are meant to hare him so. I hate payday and subprime mortgage lenders more than I hate Bernie

by Anonymousreply 91April 14, 2021 7:05 PM

At least he made sure he kept his two sons out of the side of the business where all the scamming was going on.

by Anonymousreply 92April 14, 2021 7:17 PM

Dropping dead is certainly one way to get out of serving a 150-year sentence.

by Anonymousreply 93April 14, 2021 8:30 PM

R92 That may have spared them criminal involvement and culpability, but it did not spare them from public outrage that ultimately cost them their young lives.

The elder son, Mark, was overcome with anxiety and depression in the scandal's fallout that led to his suicide on the Ponzi's second anniversary at the age of 46. He left behind a wife and four children.

The younger son, Andrew, suffered a recurrence of past cancer in 2011 and died in 2014 at 48. He was in the middle of a divorce at the time of his death, and left behind a fiancée and one child.

There are many who doubted the assertion that Madoff's sons, wife, and other family members weren't involved in the scheme. Personally, I've never believed that they were involved. As diabolical as Bernie Madoff was, I do think he kept his family completely in the dark. However, that doesn't mean that the wife and sons weren't paid from ill-gotten gains. The bankruptcy trustee has for years been pursuing estate claims to recoup assets to return to Madoff victims.

by Anonymousreply 94April 14, 2021 9:21 PM

The inmates respected him because he didn't rat on anyone else. Being a snitch is a bad thing in prison.

by Anonymousreply 95April 14, 2021 10:54 PM

It's very sad when a child goes before a parent.

Or so I've heard.

by Anonymousreply 96April 14, 2021 10:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 97April 14, 2021 11:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 100April 15, 2021 12:24 AM

R98 he was in prison because he lied and committed fraud. How are you supposed to know if he was for real or not?

by Anonymousreply 101April 15, 2021 12:26 AM

A bigtime crook who robbed from the rich, didn't give it to the poor; kept it for himself.

by Anonymousreply 102April 15, 2021 12:38 AM

I watched that clip at r65. Ruthie sounds like she smokes two packs of Marlboro Reds before lunch.

by Anonymousreply 103April 15, 2021 1:26 AM

The reason why so much money was retrieved from this particular scam artist is that the investigators worked extra hard to get the 1%ers their money back. I highly doubt any of the poor retirees, who lost their money through investment brokers, got it back.

And, of course, he got punished for betraying "his own", the rich.

R104 that's total bullshit. ALL of the investors have at this point gotten back at least 75% of their original investment (that means 75 cents for every one dollar). The reason they got that much back is that the Trustee went after the 1% and reclaimed money that they had withdrawn over the years. Try reading sometime, or is it just easier spreading lies, like repugs.
