Keeping socks together in the wash

What are your tips for keeping paired socks together?

Until I started buying more expensive and patterned socks, I never really bother caring. After ending up with single socks, I am trying to be more careful and folding one sock into the other a little after removing.

In the 90's a female friend told me she just used pins (like straight sewing pins--not the safety pin kind), but I find it hard to believe they wouldn't come apart when washing (do you tumble dry your socks or hang to dry to preserve elastic?).

There are various clips, some even featured on SharkTank, but are they really necessary?

Just get a mesh lingerie bag.

They have a mind of their own,

Sock it to me.

Yeah you can buy a mesh bag with a zipper. I honestly don’t have this problem. I have two loads of laundry a week. I could see it happening if you let laundry pile up that socks can get separated between loads but if you keep up with it, and fold and put away, it shouldn’t be an issue.

What is your problem with lost socks? And do you think chaining two of them together won't result in a pair getting lost?

As R5 says, even if they get separated and washed at different times, stuff the orphaned sock in a corner of the sock drawer and presumably its mate will find it in the next load or so of wash.

I've used these for years.

These guys can send me their dirty socks and I will wash them clean.

I only buy black socks.

by Anonymousreply 9April 14, 2021 4:12 PM

I only buy white socks.

I only like blue socks.

R5 is right, get a laundry bag and put all your pairs of socks in there. Don't overcrowd, so the socks can still get clean. You can dry socks in the laundry bag too.

I have an organizer on the top of my chest of drawers that's a large box with smaller boxes inside of it, and reserve one of the boxes for single socks that wait until the second sock gets washed.

Why are you asking for details your laundress should already be proficient in?

by Anonymousreply 13April 14, 2021 4:26 PM

OP, if you didn't throw your clothes about the property and didn't wait six weeks to do your laundry, you wouldn't have issues with the three pairs of socks you are wearing weekly.

by Anonymousreply 14April 14, 2021 4:27 PM

I don't understand why you would need to pair them...I've never lost a single sock in my entire laundering life. If you're missing one, it will eventually turn-up. Of course I put them in the dryer...when the elastic wears out you throw them out and buy new ones. And no, I don't buy cheap socks, but jeez, if you're that worried about a sock, then you probably shouldn't be buying something that's obviously stretching your budget.

I lost one of my favorite exercise socks, which turned up a decade later in the space between the washer tub and the outer shell of the washer. They can also end up under the agitator in a top-loader.

by Anonymousreply 16April 14, 2021 4:31 PM

I lost Socksy Gumdrop in the washer.

by Anonymousreply 17April 14, 2021 4:38 PM

I prefer to let them run free.

by Anonymousreply 18April 14, 2021 4:40 PM

Let it go. If the other one doesn't come back, they weren't meant to be.

by Anonymousreply 19April 15, 2021 12:49 AM

I won't think a regular straight pin would work. I think they would fall apart and you'd risk poking yourself.

by Anonymousreply 20April 15, 2021 1:20 AM

R7 Do you unclip them they come out of the dryer or do you keep them clipped in your dresser too?

Is anyone line drying or using a drying rack for socks these days to preserve elastic?

by Anonymousreply 21May 6, 2021 2:26 PM

r21 If I have enough of the, sometimes I leave them clipped. If you're REALLY anal about it -- they have a little hook at the top and you could actually hang them on a wire hanger (or a clothesline.)

by Anonymousreply 22May 6, 2021 3:51 PM

If you have trouble with your socks wash them separately from your other clothes and handle them right away after they are done. It comes down to what is more important to you, the efficient and economical use of your washing machine or your peace of mind?
