Sally Struthers on why she gave up Save the Children

She also called Trump "the orange butthole", says Rita Moreno was a terrible person.

Everyone knows Rita Moreno is a Class A cunt. Always has been.

by Anonymousreply 20April 13, 2021 6:20 AM

I recall being seated adjacent to Rita Moreno at a Beverly Hills hot spot. It was a late lunch on a sunny patio with few patrons. She held court over a bevy of much younger males, maybe 5 or 6 of them, all nice looking and actor-dancer fit so I assumed they were in some type of show with her. She was very loud, very, very. She had a mouth like a construction worker on steroids. Every other word was fuck, shit, goddammit, etc. She's 89. I believe she was about 50 at the time. I found her to be shockingly nasty and crude. It was interesting for about 20 minutes and then it ruined my lunch.

by Anonymousreply 21April 13, 2021 6:23 AM

I was having a cup of vanilla ice cream at DQ three years ago and Rita Moreno came over and vomited into it.

by Anonymousreply 22April 13, 2021 6:25 AM

I doubt Moreno could afford to be a Class A asshole. She's nearly always been a featured player.

She's also the only celebrity so far to kiss up to the religious right for years (TBN, The 700 Club, etc.) only to trash their beloved presidential messiah (after he left office of course).

by Anonymousreply 41April 13, 2021 7:04 AM

I heard that years ago....a friend of a friend worked at a theater where Sally and Rita did The Odd Couple and said Sally was a doll and Rita...wasn't.

Rita didn't get movie jobs after winning the Oscar because she wasn't actually a great actress and she wasn't conventionally pretty. She's a terrific entertainer with a strong personality (for TV) but as an actress, she doesn't have much range.

Rita is actually proof that the EGOT thing is quite stupid.

by Anonymousreply 42April 13, 2021 7:05 AM

Rita's a cunt and has been for decades.

Any woman who would attempt suicide over Marlon Brando leaving her is a fool.

Her behavior after winning a Tony Award in 1975 was the height of cuntiness.

Sally seems a bit daft. But the full Maron interview is worth a listen - you get a better sense of her whole self. She’s not afraid to name names. I suspect her appearance on The 700 Ckub was more benign than it appears. Having toured the country. I’m sure there’s some regions that are best reached through that venue; I doubt the actress you played Gloria and was pretty vocal about women’s rights did much to compromise herself or others on that show. Would be interesting to hear what she says about it now.

by Anonymousreply 55April 13, 2021 9:43 AM

[quote] I doubt the actress you played Gloria and was pretty vocal about women’s rights did much to compromise herself or others on that show.

She was playing a character! Dixie Carter played ultra-liberal feminist Julia Sugarbaker for years, yet the actress was a conservative Republican who negotiated liberal Julia rants for song solos (shrill soprano and all) with Linda Bloodsworth-Thomason.

Scroll back up to restore default view. Yahoo Celebrity Sally Struthers reveals terrifying reason she stopped working with Save the Children Raechal Shewfelt Raechal Shewfelt·Editor, Yahoo Entertainment Mon, April 12, 2021, 4:46 PM·3 min read

For years, Sally Struthers's commercials for Save the Children, with their heartbreaking images of children in need, were all over TV.

Struthers revealed Monday on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that she stopped working as an ambassador for the organization and another, similar one after 35 years because of a terrifying experience. It happened once when she had flown into Uganda on a small plane to meet one of the kids she was sponsoring.

"They brought [the child] from his village, which was quite a few hours away. He had traveled to come meet his sponsor, to meet me, and I made some commercials with him, and I played with him and I brought him toys and balloons," Struthers said. "Well, a roving band of guerrilla warfare guys came out of the bushes and asked [him] where he was from, and he named his village, which was far away, and they decided that we had kidnapped him, and they were going to shoot all of us."

The priest, who happened to speak the same language as the men, instructed Struthers to back away, without turning her back to them, and they all survived. But it was a turning point for the All in the Family actress.

"I thought, 'I've been on so many little airplanes that could have crashed and in so many horrible situations.' I came back from one of my trips overseas with hepatitis." Struthers said. "I thought, 'What am I doing? I've got a child, a real-life child of my own, and I'm gonna make her an orphan. I can't do this anymore.'"

It was a relief for Struthers, who was already the butt of jokes on In Living Color, South Park and elsewhere for the ads.

"Besides, everyone in the world is making fun of me," said Struthers, who has extensive credits in theater and TV. "I could never understand that from the first time I found out some comic or another made fun of me and then a greeting card was on sale somewhere making fun of me. It dumbfounded me that if you're trying to help hungry children, you're fodder for horrible, cruel jokes. What's wrong with the world?"

Maron noted that the ads were so prevalent that, "You could not not see them."

"I don't think it was about the cause or necessarily about you, [but] it was inescapable," he said.

During the interview, Struthers also talked about her impression of former President Donald Trump. Referring to him as "the orange butthole," she explained that she was once seated across from him at a White House dinner, long before he was president. She asked if she could use the lobby of Trump Tower in New York for an art auction to benefit Save the Children. He said sure, and he told her to give him a call. Struthers said that when she did, she received a much different response. As Struthers told it, a woman left her on the phone for five minutes and then said, "He's not interested."

She had equally negative things to say about Rita Moreno, the actress who co-starred with her in a female, stage version of The Odd Couple in 1985. Struthers described Moreno as "just a mean, difficult human being."

Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to both Trump and Moreno for comment.

by Anonymousreply 63April 13, 2021 1:14 PM

I think the reason that those Save the Children commercials were ridiculed was because a once thin television star was now overweight and usually dressed head to toe in a black designer pantsuit and sunglasses in surrounded by starving children in the middle of some impoverished village somewhere in Africa. She was literally the image of Western overindulgence and noblesse oblige.

I enjoyed Sally’s Maron interview.

Fuck Jackie Weaver for coming to the US and basically taking Sally’s career. She basically played Sally in Silver Linings Playbook.

Also... of course they’re dragging Miss Latina Rita out for the Blackademy Awards because... wokeness.

These are the most superficial and racist of times. Truly.

by Anonymousreply 73April 13, 2021 2:05 PM

Yes, her Save The Children commercials were ridiculously tone deaf. An overfed, privileged actress begging you to send money. One of the running jokes was “If Sally ate a few less Ho Hos, she wouldn’t have to be asking other people for money.”

And these commercials came at a time when charitable organizations were under scrutiny for mismanagement of funds. I think it was around 1986 when there was a huge scandal with United Way.

And as mentioned, the commercials were broadcast all the time. We had a local station that played sitcoms from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm every day during the Summer (built in audience of school kids) and her commercial played at every break. So you’d be laughing at Laverne & Shirley or That Girl and then fat, weepy Sally would appear three times every 30 minutes. And sometimes they would run the commercial twice in one break.

Isn't it established by now that Sally Struthers is one of those simple and sweet type of people? She means no real harm I do dare say. Anyone who uses the word "butthole" in leu of the profanity "asshole" is a bit of an innocent.

Those "Save the Children" commercials she did were in somewhat poor taste but Sally Struthers would truly be torn up about those innocent children sincerely. Color me naïve but I don't think she was acting her way through those commercials much.

R74, most of us in the developed world are way overfed relative to poor nations. Would it be more powerful coming from a skin-and-bones spokesperson?

And, yeah, she was successful, but her appearance in those commercials gave them an air of legitimacy.

The issue with the commercials is, as Maron noted, they seemed to be on all the time. I think we as viewers tend to have a guilty reaction to pleas for money for people we know need it more than us, so those of us who haven’t given feel lousy about ourselves whenever we see them.

by Anonymousreply 103April 13, 2021 8:18 PM

The story about Rob Reiner being cold toward her at some film premier years ago was odd. I would love to know the whole story about that. And it sounds like she doesnt speak to Norman Lear?

by Anonymousreply 124April 13, 2021 10:24 PM

Maybe he had a lifetime of that shrill voice from being on the show together and he just could not again?

by Anonymousreply 125April 13, 2021 10:26 PM

[quote]The story about Rob Reiner being cold toward her at some film premier years ago was odd.

Reiner has always been an asshole. Even on AITF. Jean Stapleton once said that she and Sally would sit down at the table and wait while Reiner and Carol O'Connor would argue about how a scene should be played.

by Anonymousreply 126April 13, 2021 10:28 PM

Carroll O Connor thought he was going to have a lot of input into Gloria, but when the producers hired for the show iced him out after the pilot, he blamed Sally and he stopped speaking to her. I can't remember if they made up before he passed, but she was at his funeral.

It was Carroll's idea to continue with Archie Bunker's Place. Norman wanted the show to end in 79, but Carroll refused and wanted to continue. It was Norman who also convinced CBS to pull the plug on ABP in 1983, despite it still being a top twenty show because he thought it had gone on long enough. Carroll was livid because he wanted one more year and a final episode where Archie was to marry again. Norman was still upset over having to kill Edith off.

That punch at R94 from Steve McQueen was real. The crew taught Sally how to take a movie punch and they did two times but the third take Steve accidentally punched in right in the face and down she went and that was the take used. Watch Steve look down like Uh oh.

Was this a paying gig for Sally or did she donate the $$$ back to the starving kids?

by Anonymousreply 138April 14, 2021 12:39 AM

Poor Sally. Seems like she was something of a misfit. Rob Reiner doesn't talk to her, neither does Norman Lear. Lear wouldn't release her from four episodes to do Day of the Locust, and she was excluded from some social activities Lear did with the cast. . The good thing is she said that when Paul Bogart took over directing the series, she started getting more stuff to do. Better scripts and stories that featured Gloria.

by Anonymousreply 139April 14, 2021 3:26 AM

She really did just want to make more money

by Anonymousreply 140April 14, 2021 3:29 AM

The Maron interview was interesting. I remember hearing before that Struthers wasn’t able to do “The Day of the Locust” because Lear wouldn’t work around her schedule (yes, I’m an eldergay!) so It was interesting to hear it straight from Struthers herself. And dubious of Lear to release Rob Reiner to do “Fire Sale” the following year.

And Struthers certainly didn’t pull any punches about Rita Moreno! Plus, how often is Al Lettieri discussed in an interview?

Thanks for the tip, DL!

Circa 2003 I was backstage at Hollywood Squares. It was Blondes Have More Fun week. Barbara Eden, Pamela Anderson, Sally Struthers and Carol Channing were featured, among others.

Sally Struthers spotted Carol Channing, and walked up to her, arms wide open. "Hello Carol!" Sally said, embracing Carol Channing. Carol goes "BARBARA! How nice to see you!" Sally goes "No, no, it's Sally!" And Carol goes "Yes, of course, SALLY!"

R174 Well there are five kinds of people in this world.

1. Regular-sized people: Not fat, not thin, just somewhere in the middle and always will be without trying. They get to eat whatever they want and manage to remain "normal" size.

2. Skinny-fat people: Born to be fat but have dieted all their lives and remained on the skinny side. This is a Hellish life that no one should have to deal with. Large, horsie framed people that look longingly at example #1 people that get to eat real food.

3. Fat-skinny people: Born skinny and decided they enjoy mashed taters and gravy and cream puffs. You can often tell them by their weak frames with big bellies and butts.

4. Fatasses: Always have been, always will be.

5. Skinnyminnies: Always have been, always will be. I hate you!

I should make a poll so we can all tell which one we are!

by Anonymousreply 179April 14, 2021 9:29 PM

3, 4, 2, 4, 2 - Started getting chubby around 12 and then dieted and kept the weight off until I was 20 and every decade I got bigger. Now trying to take off 25 years of bad eating and feeling sorry for myself. Yes I know I will look better and be more healthy but it is depressing not being able to eat calories mindlessly.

It is not a difficult accent--but she uses her standard Googie Gomez accent instead. Of course no one tried to do the right accent, which made you wonder why they did not just make the characters Puerto Ricon or Dominican.

On the subject of “The Day of the Locust”, one thing I’ve never understood — Karen Black stated in more than one interview that appearing in “The Day of the Locust” was the biggest mistake of her career. Considering all of the Z-grade schlock that Black later agreed to, that she singled out a respectable project with excellent talent on both sides of the camera as her biggest career mistake is a real head-scratcher.

by Anonymousreply 225April 15, 2021 6:24 PM

I think that had more to do with the filming experience and not the finished product, r225. What role was Sally up for in that?

by Anonymousreply 226April 15, 2021 6:29 PM

Sally Struthers was offered the role of Faye Greener, the role that Karen Black played in the film. Black mag have been a little too old for the role of the teasing player (in the book, the character is a teenager, though they skewed older in the film) but she is excellent in the film.

by Anonymousreply 227April 15, 2021 6:46 PM

Sally wanted the role of Faye. imdb says that Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn and Jill Clayburgh all turned it down. I wonder if Sally was ever offered the role.

She also had a tough time on set if I recall but I don't remember the details. I think Atherton was a real handful.

by Anonymousreply 239April 15, 2021 7:03 PM

R233, I think it might have done better with Struthers. She is more right for the character. Her youthfulness and vulnerability, plus the surprise of seeing a TV star in a surprizing role might have helped the film do better.

Yikes, I’d never heard that Raquel Welch wanted the role of Faye in “The Day of the Locust”. I don’t think she would have brought the same depth to the character that Karen Black did!

by Anonymousreply 242April 15, 2021 7:04 PM

[quote]Norman Lear wouldn't let her film the movie so she was clearly offered a role in it.

She was probably offered the role of Adore and Norman Lear was just being kind.

I don't think Sally was looking at it from Lear's point of view. If the movie sucked, it might damage the rising popularity of All In the Family through association with Sally. At that moment, he needed Sally to be the "Vivian Vance" of All in the Family and probably wouldn't risk breaking up the comic foursome of O'Connor, Stapleton, Reiner and Struthers.

I think with Reiner, he was already Hollywood Royalty and Lear probably didn't want to start a war with his father.

by Anonymousreply 243April 15, 2021 7:06 PM

R233 here, I actually recall liking the film though it's been twenty years since I've seen it, but I just remember reading that it was not a success, but I agree with whoever said that Struthers might have done better in the part than Black. Black is always really distracting to watch.

You can't cast someone who looks like Raquel in the role of Faye. She has to be someone who physically looks like the kind of woman who THINKS she's gonna be a star, but doesn't really have the beauty for it.

Sally's look and experience in The Getaway and Five Easy Pieces would have made her a good choice. Karen Black was probably a better choice because she's a better actress, but as much as I love her, she wasn't very good in Locust.

[quote]She was probably offered the role of Adore and Norman Lear was just being kind.

I assume you're joking with that, but a glance at the cast list and I don't see ANY other character that she could have been offered. No way would she have been Mary Dove. Maybe Adore's mother, Mrs. Loomis?

The lady who played Mrs. Loomis, Gloria LeRoy, was on All in the Family as a guest star, one time with the last name Loomis, apparently three years before Day of the Locust. Very strange.

by Anonymousreply 249April 15, 2021 7:15 PM

Sally HAD the role and was trying to work out a schedule. Lear wouldn't let her off so Sally suggested getting a stand in all week for blocking and she would come on Friday tape day, learn all the blocking and tape that night. Lear said no.

Sally had two A pictures on her resume already, "Five Easy Pieces" and "The Getaway" so this would have advanced her movie career. Karen Black and Burgess Meredith were nominated for The Golden Globe but Burgess went to an Oscar nomination and Black was snubbed.

I recall Sally Struthers giving an interview a few years back about being ready for retirement, but that she has to work to earn a living.

Even with television actors being paid much less than what they make today, I was curious as to why she was not in a better position after all those years as a regular on 'All in the Family.' Turns out she went through her savings trying to get out of her contract with Norman Lear after missing out on 'Day of the Locust;' she was pissed off about the nepotism and boys' club atmosphere that allowed Rob Reiner to leave when he wanted but not her.

She talks about wearing a sweatshirt that said "Prisoner of Rehearsal Hall Three" before taping. Dramatic!

by Anonymousreply 258April 15, 2021 9:21 PM

Karen claimed rumors of her being unprofessional started when she was filming Locust and it wound up damaging her career.

People forget that Karen was a well known star in the early to mid 70's. Airport 1975 at the time was the anticipated sequel to an award winning, box office smash. By the late 70's her clout started to rapidly evaporate.

by Anonymousreply 259April 15, 2021 9:22 PM

Struthers mentioned the sweatshirt in the Marc Maron interview, too.

Interesting to speculate how she would have done in “The Day of the Locust”, though I think Karen Black is excellent in the film.

It's the old myth that working actors are rich. Syndication rates were lower then. Sure actors don't make minimum wage but most actors don't make millions a year either. Right from the start actors have to pay taxes, lose 10% off the gross for a manager, another 10 % for an agent and extras like a publicist etc.

Team Struthers, FWIW.

What I wonder from time to time, be it Struthers or any actor in a sitcom of the 70s, 80s, up to today, even, is what one of the posters above was noting about percentages. I, too, have wondered how do prominent actors (recognizable, anyway) claim they have run out of money. I don't believe nor disbelieve them, but I do wonder just what are the percentages that they have coming from their earnings. What are the standard percentages and expenses they have? Taxes, manager, publicist...what else, expenses that non-actors don't have to contend with? When did residuals come into play?

One reason Lear might not have liked Struthers is her continued connections to the religious right.

She didn't make a single appearance on the 700 Club & TBN shows (as someone upthread alleged) but was probably in the top 5 entertainers to lend their name to those causes (anti LGBT, abortion, gun control. pro death penalty, etc.).

Lear is rumored to be bisexual & his "People For The American Way" organization monitored the religious right's actions across the globe which Struthers HAD to have known about as he has done so many interviews over the years about this cause that is so near & dear to him.

It seems like one of bigoted old Sally's fringe benefits for doing all of those appearances was to get back at Lear.

I'm sure Rob Reiner & Carroll O'Connor (who both supported us when Anita Bryant went on her late 70s rampage) were not too thrilled with her for doing those appearances either. I recall Reiner has done several things for Lear's PFTAW over the years. All 3 are solid dems in their causes. Jean S. is/was a mystery to me politically. Sally is the only known AITF cast member to kiss GOP ass. in public

If you're lucky. It's more like anywhere between 10%-20% depending on the market to both the agent and the manager and also depending on whether you are union or non-union. Union would be 10% agent and an additional 10-15% to your manager. Non-union actors can sadly (market dependent) end up paying upwards of 20% to their agent. Essentially before taxes and paying anyone else like a publicist or a lawyer ... you could get 25% of your salary hacked off.

[quote]Sally was doing the religious right circuit LONG before Victoria came out as a right wing wacko.

She's not anti-gay. She was chirping about her support of gay marriage over a decade ago.

[quote]She had to, didn't she, [R310]? In order to do the commercials she had to tow the line with them.

They wanted a celebrity spokesperson and they got one. She didn't have to tow the line at all with them. They needed her. Furthermore she left them and went to their competitor, "Save the Children." She did work with multiple children's charities back then even beyond those two.

by Anonymousreply 318April 18, 2021 5:35 AM

R318 Since I boycotted anything Sally did back in the 80s & 90s, I haven't kept up with her on any level.

She may have made a comment about gay marriage over a decade ago (when it became easier to do so then say back in the 90s) but she wasn't always by our side when the Pat Robertsons & Benny Hinn were saying gay men "were going to put blood contaminated with AIDS" in water towers across the US in order to get more support for their cause & AIDS funding."

Struthers was hanging out with these slanderers & not condemning any of the hatful lies they spilled over the public air waves & around the world (these evangelists had set back the entire gay & AIDS movements for years if not decades in various nations with all of their words & actions).

Sally may have saved some lives from hunger but what about the :LGBT ones that still had horrible lives from the rhetoric she helped promote?

Struthers is like Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, Patti LaBelle & Valerie Harper. They say they're gay friendly in an interview & then go on all of these religious right shows talking about the "lack of morals" which to these types is a code that includes our community.

The bottom line is if they're all such fans of these religious right shows like The 700 Club, then they HAVE TO KNOW what they're about when it comes to the fearmongering, slander & discrimination that they send our way on a continuing basis.

by Anonymousreply 319April 18, 2021 6:02 AM

by Anonymousreply 321April 18, 2021 6:16 AM

Donna Summer killed her career with the born again Jesus shit in the 80s. And yes, she did go on the 700 Club. How could she have been so clueless as to who the majority of her fans were?

by Anonymousreply 322April 18, 2021 6:30 AM

Harper did countless interviews with The 700 Club about any subject they wanted.

Valerie never corrected them when the "news" segments at the start of the show slandered us as unfit parents (such as the famous Sharon Bottoms case in the early 90s) among other cases.

She could 've said "I must take issue with your news desk hit piece as I know many gays & lesbians & they make wonderful parents."

Nothing was said in our defense on gays in the military (no "they just want a job & do a patriotic duty"), civil unions or the awful "Defense Of Marriage Act"(no "they just want to visit their partners in the hospital, make medical decisions for them, claim their loved one at the morgue".), anti discrimination protections (she was on these shows in the early 90s when Colorado passed their amendment banning local governments from passing anti discrimination measures . She said no "gay friendly" words on our behalf like they just want to make ends met like every heterosexual American).

Harper (as well as Struthers) could've went to bat for us when we need a player the most but she chose to stay in the dugout. Some hero.

I believe they take our money & donate them to their religious right causes & justify performing for largely gay audiences as dong "the Lord's work".

R324 Unfortunately very few celeb interviews are on the CNB website or YouTube. Our community could learn alot from these revelations (pun intended).

Harper got a conservative voting block by appearing on these shows & tried to use them for votes when she went up against Melissa Gilbert for SAG President but that wasn't enough for her to pull out a win. I never saw her on any of these shows after that. It's possible she used these right wing platforms strictly for her own employment/financial ambitions like Norma McCorvey.

Same (more or less)—I can hold forth for hours about obscure sitcoms and Movies of the Week, but I only remember the terrible, cheap-looking syndicated series with Sally and Ed Winter as the boss. I had no idea it had ever been on network TV, much less that Miss Jean Marsh had co-starred as Roz the Rat.

R330 Write to Valerie Harper's next of kin & ask if they kept any of her 700 Club appearances on tape or try your luck with CBN.

Tell them your a fan of hers or that you're doing research for something. Whatever works.

You might end up with a copy of her "greatest hits" in your possession. Ask for Donna or Sally's appearances too while you're at it.

by Anonymousreply 332April 18, 2021 7:49 AM

R332 Honey, you're the dumb cunt who insists all this shit is the truth.

You're the one who needs to come up with the receipts, not me.

Fuckin' loon.

Sally’s ex-husband is the one who founded the Rader Institute.

I don't need to come up with any receipts for anyone because I never promised anyone any) so sorry R333 if I don't have a bunch of hateful right wing talk shows on tape after nearly 40 years after they aired.

Maybe you should write to People For The American Way or The Southern Poverty Law Center who seem to keep an eye on these types of groups with lengthy files.

I don't have anything to prove to you directly. I'm just telling what I saw back in those decades when I was flipping thru the channels & saw Pat's ugly mug chatting up Valerie & Sally (about how Hollywood's morals were in the gutter & his show was bashing us as the worst people in the world while both of them sat back & said nothing).

You might not be aware but his Christian Coalition groups protested even having an episode of Roseanne Barr kissing a woman on the lips back in the early 90s. Roseanne could have pulled out a gun & shot a woman on the same episode but no a same sex kiss was more offensive to these crazy vultures.

by Anonymousreply 339April 18, 2021 10:22 AM

Valerie Harper publicly supported the orange juice boycott when Anita Bryant was making her hateful comments against gay people.

I seriously doubt she did a 180 in just a few short years.

[quote]What was the deal with all the cast changes in "9 to 5?" Seems like Valerie Curtin was the only one who was there the entire time. And they added a bunch of characters in the later season.

The constant changes ended up being the death of the show. I never watched it when it was on ABC, but according to TV historians it actually did fairly well its first couple of seasons. After Jane Fonda quit as executive producer and Leah Ayres replaced Valerie Curtin in the third season, the ratings took a nosedive and ABC pulled the plug before all the episodes aired.

I noticed in the opening-credits supercut at R169 that Phoebe Snow sang the theme song the first season, which makes me wonder if there was behind-the-scenes drama with Dolly before the premiere. Was she originally supposed to reprise Doralee for TV?

by Anonymousreply 345April 18, 2021 6:23 PM

[quote]Was she originally supposed to reprise Doralee for TV?

Dolly was way too big a star at that time to even think about doing a TV series.

I think Rachel was picked because she came close to being like Dolly (for obvious reasons).

Jane did make a guest appearance on the show. But none of the others did.

by Anonymousreply 346April 18, 2021 6:31 PM

"9 to 5" constantly changing cast and re-recorded theme song reminds me of "It's a Living/Making a Living."

But the "9 to 5" girls could never pivot like the "Living" girls.

by Anonymousreply 347April 18, 2021 7:21 PM

The waitresses were interchangeable on "It's A Living" because they had the super talented Marian Mercer as Nancy and Paul Krebbs as the lounge lizard as tentpoles.

by Anonymousreply 348April 18, 2021 7:31 PM

R348, that would be Paul Kreppel.

by Anonymousreply 349April 18, 2021 8:10 PM

Sally is friends with the guy who runs the Ogunquit Playhouse, or something. I saw her in a couple of things, but just cameos. Froy was in One Day At A Time, the Latino remake of the TV series, for 3 or four episodes. Rita had young cast people come to her apartment one time.

by Anonymousreply 350April 18, 2021 10:26 PM

R123 She said Carroll O'Connor popped meprobamate (Miltown) regularly when things were stressful on-set. It was a mild tranquilizer that was popular in the 1940s-1960s until benzos like Valium came along.

She says Norman Lear's assistant told her that she (the assistant) and others would read bestsellers each week and give summaries to Lear so he could discuss books with his guests at the dinner parties to which Sally was never invited. She doesn't hide her disgust at what she considered Lear's posing, but you can tell that she would have been thrilled to have been invited to one of those parties.

The stupid jokes she said Rob would call randomly to share were fart jokes like "what does a fart in control top pantyhose sound like?" followed by his imitation of what he thought that would sound like. She'd laugh and he'd hang up.

I may have misunderstood her but it sounded like she said Rob left his first wife, Penny Marshall, after meeting an on-set photographer, but the photographer Rob met was from the making of "When Harry Met Sally", made in 88-89, while Rob and Penny divorced in 1981.

It's possible that Rob was friendly vs cool as a result of various states of sobriety. Also, it's possible that Rob and Sally fooled around at some point and there was a deeper layer to the awkwardness that crept into their friendship after he remarried.

From wikipedia : [quote]"Reiner remembers, "I was in the middle of my single life. I'd been divorced for a while. I'd been out a number of times, all these disastrous, confusing relationships one after another." The next time [Reiner met up with Nora Ephron], Reiner said that he had always wanted to do a film about two people who become friends and do not have sex because they know it will ruin their relationship but have sex anyway. Ephron liked the idea, and Reiner acquired a deal at a studio."

After meeting the photographer on-set, Reiner changed the ending to Harry's and Sally's getting married, which means the original scrip had their relationship not working out.

Does this mean that Sally Struthers possibly inspired Meg Ryan's Sally?

She seems sweet and innocent but also unafraid to speak her mind and be critical. Maybe "earnest" is the word. There's a bit of Victoria Jackson going on, there.

by Anonymousreply 351April 18, 2021 10:40 PM

Well, it’s obvious that Sally Struthers had what she’s having...and then some.

by Anonymousreply 352April 18, 2021 10:43 PM

Was there an explanation of how a woman who looked like Meg Ryan would fall madly in love with a guy who looked like Billy Crystal?

by Anonymousreply 353April 19, 2021 1:07 AM

R353 he was no Woody Allen - or Rob Reiner for that matter - he was kind of cute and definitely had an appeal. You can be Jewish looking and still cute, it is possible.

R329, Jean Stapleton's husband was gay as a goose.

by Anonymousreply 355April 19, 2021 2:06 AM

She also basically called Rita a slut in the Maron interview, too. It's a great interview too. She talks Maron's ear off.

by Anonymousreply 356April 19, 2021 2:13 AM

Sally said in an interview back in 2013 that she would love to retire, but she had a mortgage to pay.😳 I understand All In The Family didn’t pay Seinfeld money, but how the hell do you work for decades, have a doctor for an ex husband, and you don’t own your home at her age?

The clip of Hello Dolly is from the 50th Anniversary Tour (70 cities in six months, mostly one nighters, on a bus). Brutal. The tour not only created jobs for those involved in the tour itself but created revenue in every city it touched; hotels, theater staff, parking attendants, restaurants... on the title of the show and her name. These were not Tier A cities. Actors Equity lost many of these cities to non union tours in the nineties and early aughts, that's a huge loss, and this was an part of an attempt get those contracts back. Nothing against non union tours however now those non union tours play the smaller cities and then are slipped into the seasons of Tier A cities. That means we pay a Broadway ticket price for a tour that's paying the staff $300/week, no benefits. She works like a dog, job to job to job. As I understand it (she told me this) she never received residuals from All In The Family as she wasn't considered a star, only stars received residuals. Things have changed. She is extremely bright, funny and generous. If she met you years ago, she will most likely remember your name and who you are. She is one of the kindest people I've ever met. She is five feet tall, or less, and as far as weight, aging ain't for sissies and can be especially unkind to women. She is tough, ballsy, and has a sense of humor about herself. There's a point where the jabs at her crossed into the unacceptable. Yeah, it's funny. And horribly mean. What if that was your mom they were tearing to shreds? In front of the world. Or you? A single working mom, a girl's gotta eat. Just sayin'.

by Anonymousreply 386July 26, 2021 9:53 PM

South park was too harsh on her. Her heart was in the right place. SP made a big deal of going after everyone but they were always more cruel and merciless towards liberals.
