Tom Driberg, honorary DLer
"The winner of the 2-pound prize for a particularly lubricious puzzle in 1972 was a Mrs Rosalind Runcie, wife of the-then Bishop of St. Albans, later Archbishop of Canterbury in the Thatcher years. There's truly no end to the surprising circles into which Driberg's life and pen could propel him."
What a mess.
Eldergays, please share your recollections.

Anyway, back to Driberg: "In spite of the prevalent Oxford homoerotic ethos, his sexual energies were largely devoted to casual encounters with working-class men, rather than to relationships with his fellow undergraduates."

The powers that be covered up a lot of his sexual exploits

The powers tried him at least once when he was acquitted: "In the autumn of 1935 he was charged with indecent assault, after an incident in which he had shared his bed with two Scotsmen picked up late one night [...] Beaverbrook paid for a leading counsel, J. D. Cassels, and two unimpeachable character witnesses were recruited by the defence. Driberg was acquitted."

I forget some of the details but there was another incident where Driberg got caught blowing a guy in an air raid shelter....when he told the cop who he was the cop let him go.

R5 -- Sorry, you are, indeed, an ignorant bigot already if you support the WT.

R10: "In January 1943, while in Edinburgh to campaign in another by-election, Driberg was caught by a policeman while in the act of fellating a Norwegian sailor. In his own account of the incident Driberg records that he escaped arrest by identifying himself as "William Hickey" and as a member of parliament. These disclosures evidently overawed the constable, who took no further action; indeed, Driberg says, the incident began a chaste friendship with the officer that endured for more than ten years."
