Nancy comes across as much more sympathetic in this article, but Ron was a complete asshole.
Fuck BOTH of them! She's complicit too.

I saw an interview with the author of the new Nancy Reagan biography yesterday morning on CBS. It seemed, to me anyway, just a rehash of some of the things we’ve already heard about her but with the goal of softening and swaying people’s impression of her. Most people’s minds are made up about Ronald Reagan, they worship him or they loathe him, but Nancy was a frivolous bitch. This book is an obvious attempt to win her some fans or at least some sympathy.

To clarify where I stand on the Reagans and this book: they were garbage, glad they are dead and the book is just propaganda.

She was savvy enough to insist that a gay doctor be appointed to the AIDS committee that Reagan approved.

Didn't she learn to give her famous blow jobs from gay men?

It took the death of Nancy's "friend" Rock Hudson for her to push her husband into acknowledging the AIDS crisis, just like it took his diagnosis with Alzheimer's for her to come out in support of stem-cell research. I've said this on another thread, but that's conservatism in modern America: Ignore societal issues, or even blame the victims, until you're personally affected. Otherwise--not your problem, and certainly not something that your tax dollars should be wasted on!

R8, the LGBT equality movement took that to heart. It asked gays to come out so that people, especially conservatives, could see that LGBTs were in their own families.

[Quote] the reporter Lester Kinsolving asked him during an October 15, 1982, press briefing whether the president had any reaction to reports that 600 people had contracted the “gay plague.” It was the first public question the White House had received on the subject. The press secretary’s response: “I don’t have it. And you? Do you?” The reaction from the assembled reporters was laughter. At subsequent briefings over the next two years, Kinsolving, who was considered a gadfly, continued to press the White House spokesman about AIDS, only to be met with dismissive wisecracks questioning the reporter’s own sexual orientation. And the White House press corps continued to find these exchanges hilarious
Disgusting.

Reagan's death toll is not dissimilar to Stalin's, except that Stalin killed, horribly misguidedly, for the good of the country, whereas Reagan did it because it was fun to see gay men die.

Nancy's first and foremost concern at any time would have been Reagan's popularity or legacy. She probably spent the majority of her hours every day with gay hairdressers, make-up artists, florists, designers, and decorators.
But she didn't give a shit about the gays.

Rock Hudson died on Oct 2nd, 1985. Reagan gave his first speech on AIDS on May 31st, 1987. So it must have taken a year and half of nagging and cajoling on Nancy's part if Hudson's death was what made the difference.

A total rewriting of history.
Bitch didn’t do anything without the help of her psychic friend.

Let’s be honest. The Reagans weren’t the only ones not covered by glory. Gays who fought then against the closing of bathhouses surely have blood on their hands, too.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 12, 2021 7:41 PM |
R22, you’re comparing the most powerful position in the world to people who owned some bathhouses??? You know HIV wasn’t only a gay epidemic, right? You think straights were also going up bathhouses?!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 12, 2021 7:44 PM |
R23, you do know you're on a gay message board, right? On a thread dedicated to the Reagan Administration's gay-informed indifference to AIDs?!

[quote]Hudson attended a state dinner in May 1984, and Nancy noticed that he looked gaunt. When she expressed concern about his health, Hudson told her that he’d caught the flu while filming in Israel but had recovered and was feeling fine. A picture from that dinner in her White House scrapbook shows Hudson beaming alongside the first couple, his hand clasped with Nancy’s. Afterward, Nancy sent Hudson a set of photos from the evening. She enclosed a note suggesting that he have a doctor check a red blotch that one image showed on his neck. It had been bothering him too, so he did, in June. The skin irritation turned out to be Kaposi’s sarcoma, and that was how Hudson learned that he had AIDS.
It this a true story?

I recently read account on Hudson's AIDS discovery, written by one of Hudson's team. I don't remember Nancy Reagan receiving mention as a key figure in his diagnosis.
