I know two people whose retinas detached. They had surgery and were told to keep their faces down on a pillow for a week afterward or else they could be blinded forever. One of them ignored the recovery instructions completely. She actually flew across the country on business travel the very next day and went on about her life as usual. Both people recovered their eyesight with no lasting side effects.
