Too soon for a sketch with Phillip, Diana and Meghan?
SNL 04-10-2021 Live tonight Carey Mulligan will make her hosting debut with musical guest Kid Cudi

Carey's outfit looks like it was found in some 80s closet.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 11, 2021 3:42 AM |
I hate her OTT faux-plummy accent.
I saw Skylight on Broadway, and Bill Nighy and that hot twink Matthew Beard were excellent, but listening to her was like getting rammed in the ear with a screwdriver.

She's not really capable of anything else. She's been on the show for years and has yet to do anything funny.

I thought the iceberg segment was hilarious.

More tropes in effect:
Underwhelming featured player shows up on Update to do a low-energy character.
Bowen Yang appears on Update to do something that's 2/3 of the way toward being funny.
Everyone on the show is just so ... functional. Basic. Nothing exciting.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 11, 2021 4:40 AM |
Bowen Yang deserves an Emmy nomination just for that iceberg skit.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 11, 2021 4:46 AM |
What's the obsession here with Andrew Dismukes? He's not funny, he always fades into the background and isn't remotely 'hot'.

I don't know why but for some reason I thought John Legend was going to be on the show tonight, either as the host or musical guest. I could've sworn I heard them say something about him recently with regard to SNL but obviously I was wrong (and looks like it's a repeat next week).

Carey was the sister in that film where Michael Fassbender was swinging his big dick around. Think it was called SHAME.

This show had two sketches that were recycled, barely rewritten, from Phoebe Waller-Bridge's show (What's Wrong With This Picture and the historical letters thing).
Maybe the writers just didn't warm to Carey and found her difficult. But if she was difficult, why would she agree to be in an IBS commercial that was about her shitting all over a public restroom?
I think the writing staff just sucks and should be completely replaced.

R122 I think Yang is funny and underused on the show, but I also picked up the Dan Levy vibe. It was strange...since he was mocking cultural sensitivity, I wonder if he did that intentionally to parody Levy? by Anonymous | reply 136 | April 11, 2021 7:07 PM |
Do the hosts have anything to do with the skits?
I don't understand how most episodes are unwatchably bad, and most of last night was consistently funny. There was another funny episode earlier this season. I think it was Regina King. And most of the rest was just abysmal. Why isn't the quality more balanced, with a mix of good and bad every week instead of one or the other?
by Anonymous | reply 137 | April 11, 2021 7:10 PM |
I would assume that a lot of it is subjective and just the stars aligning in some kind of magical order R137. Sketch comedy is hit or miss and what's funny in the writer's room or even in rehearsals doesn't always translate to a broader audience. One of the greats at sketch comedy, Carol Burnett, discussed that at one of those Paley Center panels.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | April 11, 2021 7:16 PM |
R138 I saw an Archive of American Television interview with Lucy Lawless and she said when she did SNL, they interviewed her about a lot of things and used some of her info for sketches.
One was that as a child, she used to impersonate Stevie Nicks. They wrote her doing that in a skit and she thought it was mortifyingly bad and assumed it would be cut for time. She said Lorne told her it was going to be an Internet sensation and he was right and she was dumbfounded.
Behold!
by Anonymous | reply 139 | April 11, 2021 7:26 PM |
R138 I wonder what sketches were duds on Carol Burnett (maybe those never made it it air). I'm relatively young and I'd take the Carol Burnett show over current SNL any day.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | April 11, 2021 7:36 PM |
R137 Jay Mohr wrote a book about his two year SNL stint. He said that hosts can veto sketches at certain points. He told a couple of stories related to this. Shannen Doherty hosted the show and asked after dress rehearsal that sketch Jay co-wrote not make it to the live show. He mentioned being backstage and seeing his sketch title being taken down from a production board right after dress rehearsal wrapped. The other story he told was about Marisa Tomei. He pitched a script to her and she rejected it a couple of days later when they were narrowing down what to perform for dress rehearsal.

I'm not old enough to remember the show in its original run, but I used to watch the repeats in syndication and still do on Amazon Prime. There were a ton of sketches that really didn't work. For every Eunice and Mama sketch there were more than a few duds.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 11, 2021 7:42 PM |
R141 Well then maybe Carey Mulligan is a brilliant editor because the show was actually funny and there's little other viable explanation.
One week this year half the skits were about menstrual blood, diarrhea, farting, throwing up. It was so bad and so juvenile from beginning to end.

WTF was up with the sketch with Kate and Aidy playing boys when they have more than enough male cast members? Did Lorne not want a lesbian sketch on the show and that was their compromise?

Carey Mulligan is only 35? Why does she look like she's at least in her mid 40s?
by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 11, 2021 9:05 PM |
I canât figure out her age. A few years back she was a break out star in The Education and was a teenager, but then she played a 50 year old in Dig.

Carey sort of looks like the weird love child of Kyra Sedgwick and Martha Plimpton.

R148 The show had a lesbian sketch last night.
The whole gag of the gerky teen boys sketch was that women played the boys. I was confused at first but then it amused me because it was so silly. They both reminded me of Pat.

Several cast members have intimated that the host makes a big difference in the quality of the show. The hosts who are more engaged with the writers and willing to try things usually result in better shows. Not surprisingly, a lot of celebrities don't have a sense of humor about themselves and aren't willing to do anything they think is beneath them, so that limits what the writers can give them. And it helps when they are genuinely talented and can sing/dance or act in front of an audience. That's why even a douchebag like Justin Timberlake always does well on SNL--the writers can give him anything and he's game and can pull it off.
I remember in an interview Tina Fey talked about how awful Paris Hilton was when she hosted. She had no self awareness and no sense of humor, and just wanted them to write skits that trashed other famous women she hated. Imagine how funny that show could have been if she were more open-minded and cooperative with the writers? Instead it's totally forgotten. Same with Trump--the episode was awful because they had to cater to his massive infantile ego.

An Education came out in 2009, when Carey was 24... more than a few years back.

I believe it was Seth Meyers who also said that the host is given a lot of input in what makes it to air. The idea is that they want the host to be comfortable with their material to make for âa funnier showâ. He said the problem with it is that sometimes truly funny sketches get passed over for another sketch because the host wants to do the sketch where they get to wear the funny wig. That doesnât always make for a great show.
I am usually forgiving of SNL, but I thought this episode was a stinker. Also, I am tired of watching women play men - men, of course, are NEVER allowed to play women any longer. Also, tired of the weekly âhip hop videoâ.

"Saturday Night dude"? WTF are you talking about. Fuck you. I have no connection to the show.
