Lavar Burton's aggressive self-promotion to be hired as the new permanent host of Jeopardy..
He was on CBS again this morning shilling for the job. Now, I love Lavar. I do. I grew up with him. But how and why is he so entitled to this job? He exhibits no humility, just a blatant public push to be hired. He's gone as far as peppering his lobbying with race by recently telling Entertainment Tonight that they need to hire a black person.
Is Lavar the most qualified person for the job and, even if not, should the producers of Jeopardy hire him? What says Datalounge?
|by Anonymous||reply 182||Yesterday at 6:31 AM|
I only know him from Roots and Reading Rainbow. Why do people think he would make a good game show host?
|by Anonymous||reply 2||04/09/2021|
I have neither seen nor thought about LeVar since ST:TNG went off the air in 1994.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||04/09/2021|
OP's thread title:
Lavar Burton's aggressive self-promotion to be hired as the new permanent host of Jeopardy..
What Lavar Burton really said:
Burton acknowledged the petition in a Monday tweet that expressed his apparent interest in the job.
Sorry, OP. You have a lock on being an attention whore.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||04/09/2021|
How do you demand to be a permanent host when you haven’t even guest hosted? Or does he automatically get it because of today’s woke and diverse culture?
|by Anonymous||reply 5||04/09/2021|
We need every television opening filled by black people or America is racist.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||04/09/2021|
Having watched the last few weeks, that quack Dr Oz makes the best option.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/09/2021|
I used to work for a big network, and I remember they had a mandate to do this internal audit of all the "talent" to see how "diverse" casting was (the implication being it wasnt' enough).
I wonder if they are still doing these audits, because the % of Blacks would be way over 13% (their incidence in the US based on most recent Census data) today.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/09/2021|
I used to work for a big network
No, you did not.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/09/2021|
you're stupid, r7.
burton has the right feel for the show's host. a reading program for kids, who are now adults watching jeopardy. nerd credibility from star trek.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||04/09/2021|
LeVar would be awesome. Love that guy
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/09/2021|
Wow R10, you really told me!
I actually worked for more than 1 network, but I only remember the audit thing at last one which I was at the longest.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||04/09/2021|
Levar would make me go back to watching Jeopardy. I can't stand Ken Jennings.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||04/09/2021|
I think he would make a great host. He's engaging, he has experience headlining/hosting a show and people like him. I think he has that same trustworthy/solid quality that Alex had.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||04/09/2021|
R7 We also need 75% of commercials to be of an interracial couple even though only 15% of couples in the US are interracial.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||04/09/2021|
Why not a Hispanic man or woman? I have had it up to here with Hispanics being portrayed as nothing but illegal immigrants, workers, maids, laborers. Where's our tv shows? Where's our Best Actor or Actress? A person from Spain doesn't count!
We deserve everything everyone else has and will one day be the majority!!
|by Anonymous||reply 17||04/09/2021|
R17 What about my wife, Hilaria?? :) She's from Spain AND Hispanic too!
|by Anonymous||reply 18||04/09/2021|
Why not a Hispanic man or woman? I have had it up to here with Hispanics being portrayed as nothing but illegal immigrants, workers, maids, laborers. Where's our tv shows? Where's our Best Actor or Actress? A person from Spain doesn't count!
Because a lot of Hispanics consider themselves to be white and if they’re supposedly white, then they don’t need any representation.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||04/09/2021|
nooo, he is not a nice person, trust....
|by Anonymous||reply 21||04/09/2021|
I am for him getting the job if he is billed and always referred to as: Lavar "Roots" Burton.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||04/09/2021|
But how and why is he so entitled to this job? He exhibits no humility, just a blatant public push to be hired.
The show's fans have been going wild over the idea for months. Then a few celebs got involved. Actually there were quite a few fans talking about it years ago.
Beyond his film and television career, he's an actual fan of the show and the man is known for his work with reading literacy. He won celebrity Jeopardy years ago.
He speaks very clearly and has a very clean voice. I didn't feel like Jennings did that great of a job with that aspect.
He's also so mild and beloved by my generation, who grew up watching him as kids, that he'd be perfect.
It has nothing to do with his race. He has the street cred, the history with "learning" and he's a well respected actor. I think he'd be a good transition host.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||04/09/2021|
I saw Patton Oswalt pushing for LaVar on Twitter but after his quick marriage to that star fucker wife his opinion is not to be trusted.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||04/09/2021|
Do we really want someone hosting Jeopardy that used to stick his dick in Joyce DeWitt?
|by Anonymous||reply 26||04/09/2021|
He should grow his mustache again too. I quit watching when Alex shaved his
|by Anonymous||reply 27||04/09/2021|
So many other hotter guys could host it with zest vigor and hungness....
|by Anonymous||reply 28||04/09/2021|
Sure I'll take you seriously, OP. Since you misspelled his name twice, even though it's spelled clearly in the link you provided. Mispronouncing or misspelling a name repeatedly after being told how it's spelled is classic racist microaggression bullshit.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||04/09/2021|
He seems too old. Are they supposed to hire a geriatric host and have him last only a few seasons before he gets sick or dies?
|by Anonymous||reply 30||04/09/2021|
Burton is 64. Trebek was 80 when he died o pancreatic cancer. If Levar were to become host and and if he were to live as long as Alex, he will have hosted for 16 years at that point.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||04/09/2021|
Joyce DeWitt and LeVar broke up because Joyce couldn't come more than once without double penetration, and that made LeVar insecure.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||04/09/2021|
He seems too old. Are they supposed to hire a geriatric host and have him last only a few seasons before he gets sick or dies?
I agree. Let’s get someone no older than 50, preferably in their 40’s.
If LeVar wants work, he should go do a Reading Rainbow reboot.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||04/09/2021|
It's as if every racist cockroach on DL ignored R4's post.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||04/09/2021|
Only if he wears the visor.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||04/10/2021|
I'm 100% for this if it means we can be spared Ken Jennings
|by Anonymous||reply 38||04/10/2021|
Is he out of work and desperate for a steady gig?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||04/10/2021|
The petition was from fans of Burton’s gentle intelligence/heir to Mr Rogers brand thing to get him a guest host slot/audition. Of course it has attracted media interest.
FFS, “Dr Oz”? That was an insult to all Jeopardy! stands for!
|by Anonymous||reply 40||04/10/2021|
It's as if every racist cockroach on DL ignored [R4]'s post.
It's because they just really, really wanted to say "n-gger," that's the only reason they're here.
I'd like to think everyone FFed r23, but considering he's been dropping racist slurs for months on end, I suspect no one has bothered to FF him at all.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||04/10/2021|
Hosting this shoe would be such a boring job. I think any actor would go nuts after a couple weeks and quit.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||04/10/2021|
I get the feeling its more the wokies on Twitter posting this and not the actual fans of the show Jeopardy.
Most of the accounts I see pushing this are also tweeting about the SJW cause célèbre of the week.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||04/10/2021|
"Why, only wokies would want a darky to host a national television programme!"
|by Anonymous||reply 44||04/10/2021|
r41 the last time I saw a troll used the n-word, Muriel deleted the entire thread within hours.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||04/10/2021|
Not sure that happens anymore, R45. Two or three of the recent anti-Asian hate crime threads had the n-word and other similar slurs and they're still up. One is grayed out, though.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||04/10/2021|
Black people are woke snowflakes! Why can't they stay in their place? I hate them and they ruin my tv.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||04/10/2021|
Just cancel this outdated show already. The old farts that were fans are dying off in droves.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||04/10/2021|
Sorry, he's not attractive enough to host a game show.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||04/10/2021|
Is the country ready for this?
|by Anonymous||reply 50||04/10/2021|
Is he still pretending to be straight?
|by Anonymous||reply 51||04/10/2021|
I think he's a bit on the old side, but otherwise have no objections.
Humility and reticence get you nowhere in Hollywood.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||04/10/2021|
Levar is too old. They need to go with someone younger who will be able to host the show for a long time. Ken Jennings was good, so was Mike Richards.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||04/10/2021|
He's committing literal violence against Daily Doubles.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||04/10/2021|
r23 Dahling, we don't use hard "R"s around here. Please, keep up.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||04/10/2021|
Is he still pretending to be straight?
He's been married for 29 years and has two adult children.
I met him at an event once, he was there alone as were other Star Trek alumni, supporting a cast member. (They weren't all sitting together.)
They need to go with someone younger who will be able to host the show for a long time.
Why? He has name recognition and will be able to host, God-willing, for at least 10 years. At that point he still wouldn't be as old as Alex was.
I'm also not entirely sure Jeopardy's audience would want a younger host. I'd say 50s would be ideal but LeVar would be good to help people move on and forward from the great Alex Trebec.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||04/10/2021|
Patton Oswalt is pushing for him again on Twitter. He had become tiresome
|by Anonymous||reply 57||04/10/2021|
Why don’t people like Ken Jennings?
|by Anonymous||reply 58||04/10/2021|
Sorry, Patton Oswalt getting involved sealed the deal for me. No fank you Mr Burton!
|by Anonymous||reply 59||04/10/2021|
Why DO people like Mormon Ken doll Jennings?
Tell us your deepest secrets...
|by Anonymous||reply 60||04/11/2021|
Ken Jennings seems to be a Democrat from his Twitter posts so I figured that turned off some of the viewers
|by Anonymous||reply 61||04/11/2021|
Just cancel this outdated show already. The old farts that were fans are dying off in droves.
I agree. Does anyone under 40 even watch this show?
|by Anonymous||reply 62||04/11/2021|
He’s not a bad choice, but...
I get the feeling that Burton would be an attention whore the way Steve Harvey is on Family Feud, and the writers would have to make up answers about him.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||04/11/2021|
I get the feeling that Burton would be an attention whore the way Steve Harvey is on Family Feud, and the writers would have to make up answers about him.
Steve Harvey is a comedian. He acts like a comedian with a bonus screwed up personal life.
LeVar Burton goes unnoticed because he doesn't say or do anything controversial. It's possible, after 6 decades, that's just who he is.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||04/11/2021|
Levar Burton would be excellent. Guest host Anita Hill.
Let's do this
|by Anonymous||reply 67||04/11/2021|
Come on get Levar Burton. This is excellent.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||04/11/2021|
We need a young host. I can’t deal with Jeopardy hosts dying every few years.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||04/11/2021|
You mean like every 36 years?
|by Anonymous||reply 70||04/11/2021|
"We need a young host. I can’t deal with Jeopardy hosts dying every few years."
How about him?
|by Anonymous||reply 71||04/11/2021|
Jeopardy is my guilty pleasure. PLease Please give this to Levar.
|by Anonymous||reply 72||04/11/2021|

I'm SURE it will work!

Jeopardy is a show for intellectuals. In America, the most intellectual class is the Jews, so the new host should be Jewish. Besides, we don't have enough Jews on tv.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||04/11/2021|
R72, Please, I would like a host I could enjoy looking at.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||04/11/2021|

Only one has died! Art Fleming didn't die until 20 years after he left the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||04/11/2021|
This is the perfect fit for jeopardy.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||04/11/2021|
Mark Walberg (not the actor) has thrown his hat into the ring.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||04/11/2021|

|by Anonymous||reply 90||04/23/2021|
Lavar would be great. So far, I've really liked Anderson.
|by Anonymous||reply 91||04/23/2021|
Why is it soooo important to him, I wonder.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||04/23/2021|
Lots of bots on Twitter demanding Levar Burton, yet he hasn’t even guest hosted jeopardy. How about waiting for a job interview before starting your relentless campaign?
|by Anonymous||reply 95||04/23/2021|
Didn’t you get the memo? Every single thing must be black now. Every commercial, every award winner, every TV host - everything.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||04/23/2021|
Levar Burton - someone named Anita Hill... how about Condoleezza Rice?
Wouldn't that be special?
|by Anonymous||reply 97||04/23/2021|
Looking forward to see how he does guest hosting.
|by Anonymous||reply 99||04/23/2021|
How pathetic does your life have to be that you’re desperate to be the host of a quiz show?
|by Anonymous||reply 100||04/23/2021|
I know, R96. I get sick of seeing them, too.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||04/23/2021|
R97, No one has mentioned Omarosa, thank God.
|by Anonymous||reply 102||04/23/2021|
Lavar is perfect. I want this. I am avid Jeopardy watcher.
|by Anonymous||reply 103||04/23/2021|
I can't fathom why anyone would have a problem with LeVar Burton. He's not controversial at all and that's exactly what a show like Jeopardy needs. This isn't about a diversity hire. The man has been on television for decades - why wouldn't he be qualified to read prompts and make idle chit chat? And his age means he'll stick around as long as he's able. An actor or an athlete will get skittish and want something new. The petition wasn't created by him. It was created by people who want him for the job.
And for those asking, Ken Jennings has some tweet skeletons in his closet and a controversial podcasting partner.
|by Anonymous||reply 104||04/23/2021|
lavar burton is an excellent choice. Really the best. Let's do this. Sign the petition.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||04/23/2021|
R7, that appears to be the case.
Two of the most boring actresses I've ever seen on daytime have landed roles outside the genre; one for a film franchise; the other in a prime time series
not looking to trash them; just what's going on right now.
I'm a white gay guy; I suppose I'd be jumping all over opportunities if the pendulum was swinging in my direction.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||04/23/2021|
R104, I read that article and it seems like much ado about nothing. You have to be completely humorless to take offense to any of that. Not that any of the jokes were terribly funny. But they weren’t offensive unless you’re looking to be offended (which many people are).
|by Anonymous||reply 107||04/23/2021|
I think John Roberts from FOX News (also used to be on CBS) would be a good choice. He's personable and witty, but would keep the show moving.
|by Anonymous||reply 108||04/23/2021|
What is the age group for viewers of this show? I don’t know anybody young or old who watches it.
|by Anonymous||reply 109||04/23/2021|
They put him through hell on that Star Trek show.
|by Anonymous||reply 110||04/23/2021|
He need a job so bad that he campaigns aggressively for this gig???
|by Anonymous||reply 111||04/25/2021|
I love Levar and think he would make a fine host. However, the tone of his public campaigning (as well as its shamelessness) annoys me.
The tone is troubling because it’s being asserted that OF COURSE he’s the most qualified/best possible host, and therefore were he not to be named the host, it would be because of RACISM. The shamelessness of the campaigning is reminiscent of decades ago when Sean Young was randomly showing up in public settings in a homemade Catwoman costume because OF COURSE she was the best possible Catwoman, etc.
Burton has been world famous for about 40 years now, and surely has an agency that represents him and gets work for him. Using a social media campaign to pressure Sony Television to get this job seems tacky and unprofessional. Especially since the producers of Jeopardy are no doubt looking for someone younger to be the next host for at least the next 20 years; Trebek was 44 when he got the job. Burton is 64. The next host shouldn’t be older than 50, nor should it be someone who is a huge star outside of the show’s brand.
|by Anonymous||reply 112||04/25/2021|
So well said r112.
It's also the tone of his many followers. They sound a bit.. deranged.
I was rooting for LeVar at the beginning but this has turned me off.
|by Anonymous||reply 113||04/25/2021|
LeVar Buton needs to be Jeopardy Host NOW.
This is EXCELLENT.

|by Anonymous||reply 119||05/01/2021|
this is DL so we must mention who hot Levar was in Looking for Mr. Goodbar. (Plus he's his acting is great too. He just smolders.)
|by Anonymous||reply 121||05/01/2021|
yea, like a burnt out cig....
|by Anonymous||reply 122||05/01/2021|
Lavar Burton NOW! This is the best.
|by Anonymous||reply 123||05/01/2021|
Especially since the producers of Jeopardy are no doubt looking for someone younger to be the next host for at least the next 20 years
Why on earth is everyone insisting the next host needs to stick around for a zillion years? Alex Trebek set records for hosting Jeopardy for 37 years; a stint that long is an outlier, not an expectation. In many cases, I assume the producers would be ready to freshen up the show with a new host after five or ten years.
And could the racist troglodytes who apparently think that every time any black person is hired to do anything, it's about "wokeness" give it a rest? Burton seems like he'd be a good fit for this job because he's a nerd with a nerdy, fanboy devotion to the show and a long history promoting reading and literacy—not because he's black, ffs.
Here's an idea: how about waiting to form an opinion until Burton does his gig as a guest host and we see whether he really is a good fit and how he compares to the various other celebrities and talking heads who have guest hosted?
|by Anonymous||reply 124||05/01/2021|
I'm 32 and I grew up in a jeopardy family--i still watch it frequently. I also grew up watching Lavar burton on reading rainbow. He's got my support, he's the right fit for sure.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||05/01/2021|
R124 It’s about brand identification, and the Jeopardy brand depends on reliable consistency. Like I said, I have no doubt that Burton would be a great host. The woke tenor of the lobbying isn’t coming from him, but from all of the meme-drunk lemmings on social media. His age is a problem, though. If I were producing the show, I’d be looking at someone who could plausibly stick around for 20 years.
|by Anonymous||reply 126||05/01/2021|
There's one person on this thread that keeps pushing the Lavar Burton thing. You can pick them out by the "lets' do this!" and "I need this!" and "Let's do it!"
Is Lavar so wealthy he can pay for this kind of carpet bombing promo campaign or is it some fringe crowd-sourced group think trying to make it happen?
|by Anonymous||reply 127||05/02/2021|
It would be great. We can see what his eyes look like without the headband.
|by Anonymous||reply 129||05/02/2021|
R128, If they could get Lynn Thigpen to host, I think Alex Trebek would have a problem with that.
|by Anonymous||reply 130||05/02/2021|
R112, you are spot on.
He's the perfect choice and if he's not chosen for the gig, then somethng's wrong; it must be racism.
I watched The Equalizer last night; minorities were the majority of characters.
Everyone wants a job and everyone will do whatever they have to in order to get it.
|by Anonymous||reply 133||05/03/2021|
Lavar really is the perfect choice.
|by Anonymous||reply 135||05/03/2021|
Burton will appear as the host of Jeopardy! From July 26 to 30, 2021. YAY!
I noticed on Jeopardy last night that L.B. has styled himself to look like a swarthy Alex Trebek.
If he really wants to be the next Alex Trebek, he should try drinking.

I'd guess you ARE sad and unwell most of the time if some random actor who's not even on TV all that often makes you feel that way.

If that show of his was called [italic]Reading RAINBOW[/italic], then where the Hell were the gay authors? Maybe have Richard Chamberlain come on and read some Oscar Wilde every now and then, why don't you?

Funny you should mention Chamberlin R164. I'm watching him right now in 'The Count of Monte Cristo' on the tube. I can't believe no one knew he was gay. His hair looks like it was in rollers for days, and that MAKEUP!

He's been shamelessly all over the media and they're gushing over him like he's Michelle Obama. If he were a white guy doing this shit, nobody would stand for it. Nobody.
