John Huston's "Reflections in a Golden Eye" with Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor
Brando plays gay and Liz is his spurned wife. Is it any good? Might watch it tonight.
It doesn't have a good reputation, but Roger Ebert gave it a great review when it came out in 1967. Roger's views on the film's homosexual content seem rather progressive for the time.

It's dreadful, and too ponderous for good camp. But one look won't kill you as much as it did....
I won't give it away.

One of my all-time favorite films. Brando lusting for naked Robert Forrester. Julie Harris and her houseboy. Liz, "Garden shears! Garden shears!?"

It’s too bad Montgomery Clift died before filming began.

See it, OP. It's not the best picture ever, but it's not the worst. And it's bold. Very adult. An interesting film whose reach probably exceeds its grasp, a serious film nonetheless.

It’s a perfectly fine film.

Let us know if you get the full color version or the gold version that seems to be filmed with Josh Logan's old filters from SOUTH PACIFIC.

Cutting off her nipples with garden shears - you call that normal?

Thought Brando nailed the role of the uptight, repressed closet case

My mother and I saw this. Also saw Secret Ceremony. And they wondered how I “turned” gay.

This thread reminded me of The Only Game in Town - it's EXCELLENT. People are and were cunty about it, but I love it.
And it's on YT. Take a look.

Five foot tall Liz Taylor as a Las Vegas show girl. It's hilarious.

^ that's not important and you don't see her dancing.

"Bareback, and BARE-ASSED!"

Of course it's important. It's her job. It's why she's in Las Vegas. It defines much of her life. And Liz is spectacularly ill-suited to that job.
There is a stupid and clumsy disemboded dance sequence with close ups on Liz's face. All because her body is impossible for the role.

Reflection and his performance in the underrated Night of the Following Day (ditto Richard Boone) obliterate all the shitty films he made in the 60s, the worst being The Appaloosa. Monty would have brought a different quality, not as emotionally open as Brando, but intensely and creatively interesting. Brando's mirror breakdown scene is simply brilliant, as was Monty's superb performance in Huston's Freud. Overlooked and dazzling.

I love this insane mess of a movie, but I can only imagine how good Montgomery Clift would have been in the lead.......
