Prince Philip, an extraordinary man? To the British maybe, but what do they rest of us think?

I see the BBC has pulled out all the stops, with not a single non-hagiographic voice to be heard all day since he carked it.

[R19] After leaving Gordonstoun in early 1939, Philip completed a term as a cadet at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, then repatriated to Greece, living with his mother in Athens for a month in mid-1939. At the behest of the Greek king, George II (his first-cousin), he returned to Britain in September to resume training for the Royal Navy.[22] He graduated from Dartmouth the next year as the best cadet in his course.[23] During the Second World War, he continued to serve in the British forces, while two of his brothers-in-law, Prince Christoph of Hesse and Berthold, Margrave of Baden, fought on the opposing German side.[24] Philip was appointed as a midshipman in January 1940. He spent four months on the battleship HMS Ramillies, protecting convoys of the Australian Expeditionary Force in the Indian Ocean, followed by shorter postings on HMS Kent, on HMS Shropshire, and in Ceylon.[25] After the invasion of Greece by Italy in October 1940, he was transferred from the Indian Ocean to the battleship HMS Valiant in the Mediterranean Fleet.[26]

On 1 February 1941,[27] Philip was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant after a series of courses at Portsmouth, in which he gained the top grade in four out of five sections of the qualifying examination.[28] Among other engagements, he was involved in the battle of Crete, and was mentioned in dispatches for his service during the battle of Cape Matapan, in which he controlled the battleship's searchlights. He was also awarded the Greek War Cross.[23] In June 1942, he was appointed to the V and W-class destroyer and flotilla leader HMS Wallace, which was involved in convoy escort tasks on the east coast of Britain, as well as the Allied invasion of Sicily.[29]

Promotion to lieutenant followed on 16 July 1942.[30] In October of the same year, he became first lieutenant of HMS Wallace, at 21 years old one of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy. During the invasion of Sicily, in July 1943, as second in command of Wallace, he saved his ship from a night bomber attack. He devised a plan to launch a raft with smoke floats that successfully distracted the bombers, allowing the ship to slip away unnoticed.[29] In 1944, he moved on to the new destroyer, HMS Whelp, where he saw service with the British Pacific Fleet in the 27th Destroyer Flotilla.[31][32] He was present in Tokyo Bay when the instrument of Japanese surrender was signed. Philip returned to the United Kingdom on the Whelp in January 1946, and was posted as an instructor at HMS Royal Arthur, the Petty Officers' School in Corsham, Wiltshire.[33]

Like his wife, he did a good job doing a job that is completely useless and benefits no one but a huge family of benefits scroungers who live 30 years longer than the plebes who pay their way thanks to top-notch everything. When QEII kicks the bucket, the whole thing should be dismantled and all of their ill-gotten wealth confiscated. In other words, off with their heads. And don't give me that line about being good for tourism. France has far more tourists, and they sent their royal family to the guillotine more than 200 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 30April 10, 2021 8:12 AM

How is Philip responsible for his sisters, all of whom were many years older than him? Did Philip marry a Nazi? No? So how is he to be held responsible?

He fought Nazis. He killed a lot of them. His only father figure in his early life was a Jewish man he loved so much that he followed him from school to school, and later entrusted Charles to the same man's care and education.

The idea that 'Philip was a Nazi' is not just wrong. It's the opposite of what he was.

by Anonymousreply 31April 10, 2021 8:13 AM

Here is Philip's 'father' from the time his own father left the family: German Jew Kurt Hahn.

Kurt Matthias Robert Martin Hahn CBE[1] (5 June 1886, Berlin – 14 December 1974, Hermannsberg) was a German educator. He founded Stiftung Louisenlund, Schule Schloss Salem, Gordonstoun School, Outward Bound, and the first of the United World Colleges, Atlantic College.

Why do you think Hahn left Germany? To ESCAPE THE NAZIS. That is who Philip looked up to, learned from, leaned on, and handed his own son, the future King, over to:

"Hahn was raised as a Jew and served as the Salem School's headmaster during Adolf Hitler's rise to power. Hahn began his fierce criticism of the Nazi regime after Hitler's storm troopers killed a young communist in the presence of his mother. When he spoke out against the storm troopers, who had received no punishment, Hahn spoke against Hitler publicly. He asked the students, faculty, and alumni of the Salem school to choose between Salem and Hitler. As a result, he was imprisoned for five days (from 11 to 16 March 1933). After an appeal by British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, Hahn was released, and in July 1933 he was forced to leave Germany and moved to Great Britain."

Philip wasn't just not a Nazi, he was the direct opposite of a Nazi.

What about the sisters who married Nazis, r28? They married them before Hitler rose to power, before the real evils of the Nazi party were known and were not active Nazis or even real Nazi believers. One of his sisters married a so-called Nazi who was part of a plot to assassinate Hitler!

The idea that Philip was a Nazi, had Nazi sympathies or that has family were closely connected to Hitler is complete bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 36April 10, 2021 8:46 AM

R13, do you know anything about the situation Philip was born into and grew up in? When he was 18 months old his uncle, the king of Greece, was forced to abdicate and his father was arrested and then expelled from Greece after a botched Greek army incursion into Turkey. The family had to flee Greece, after which Philip spent a mostly nomadic life between Germany, France and the UK. His mother was a deaf paranoid schizophrenic who was institutionalised for chunks of Philip's childhood, his father ended up a drunken wastrel failed playboy in the south of France.

Most of Philip's childhood was spent being shunted off to various boarding schools, and he hardly ever saw his parents or sisters while growing up. His Jewish mentor Kurt Hahn played a big role in his upbringing, as Philip was at Hahn's boarding school in Salem, Germany until Hahn was expelled by the Germans. When Hahn fled Germany because of the rise of the Nazis, he founded Gordonstoun school in Scotland, and Philip moved to that school as soon as he could.

By the way, Hahn co-founded his school in Germany with the family one of Philip's supposedly Nazi brothers-in-law, Berthold. Berthold can't have been that much of an anti-Semite if he was funding a school run by a Jew.

by Anonymousreply 37April 10, 2021 8:54 AM

Grew up in bizarre circumstances. Father went off and lived with his mistress in Monte Carlo, mother became a nun, he was shoved off to equally whacked relations (e.g. the Lord & Lord Milford Haven: he collected porn, and she was a table-hopping dyke). That would discombobulate any kid.

Did great things (Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme), etc.

But I don't get on with Alpha Males. Or smug arseholes stuffed with money.

by Anonymousreply 38April 10, 2021 9:07 AM

Extra-ordinary in the literal sense that he had a life like no other, and had to invent his role as he went along.

Brave and distinguished in WWII, but then so were hundreds of others. Evidently his strong views on conservation were useful, and ahead of his time. The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme has endured to good effect. But then again, he had to do something with his time and special position.

Doubtless he did feel what talents he had were restricted by marriage, but he made that choice. For all his 'sacrifices' he lived a life of immense privilege. Maybe thwartedness accounted for his tedious facetious rudeness, as listed in the previous thread. Bullying, in that it was always punching down, no-one would ever dare to answer back.

A man from another age, in some ways admirable, if by no means always likeable.

[quote]How is Philip responsible for his sisters, all of whom were many years older than him? Did Philip marry a Nazi? No? So how is he to be held responsible?

A lot of people who fantasise about fighting "Nazis" hate a man who actually DID fight literal Nazis.

And even if you believe in guilt by association with the choices Philips's sisters made, his mother is "Righteous Among the Nations" and celebrated in Israel because of her courage in sheltering Jews from Nazis.

Do his mother's actions at least not neutralise those of his sisters?

[quote] Extra-ordinary in the literal sense that he had a life like no other, and had to invent his role as he went along.

His childhood was something out of a poorly written movie script: - smuggled out of country in an orange crate,

- Father flees the family in exiled-genteel poverty to take up with mistress,

- Mother congenitally deaf is (wrongly?) institutionalized and labelled a paranoid schizophrenic,

- older sisters take up with Nazis,

- closest sister (& family) dies(s) in plane crash while unexpectedly giving birth on plane and pilot crashes,

- best friend dies,

- as no fixed abode for home (shuttled among beleaguered relatives),

- little $ (borrows clothes from friends at boarding schools),

- when paperwork requested an address growing up, signs “no fixed abode”.

[quote] Brave and distinguished in WWII, but then so were hundreds of others.

Yes. Was apparently pretty good naval officer. Worked his way up rank quickly. Top of his class. Saved his overpowered ship.

[quite] Evidently his strong views on conservation were useful, and ahead of his time.

Hence, Prince Charles and his conservation/ecology bent.

[quote] The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme has endured to good effect. But then again, he had to do something with his time and special position.

Indeed. It is estimated approximately 22-24% of the British population has encountered him. (30% for the Queen). Over 22,000 engagements and he accompanied her on all foreign tours.

[quote] Doubtless he did feel what talents he had were restricted by marriage, but he made that choice. For all his 'sacrifices' he lived a life of immense privilege. Maybe thwartedness accounted for his tedious facetious rudeness, as listed in the previous thread. Bullying, in that it was always punching down, no-one would ever dare to answer back.

A strong personality. I encountered him on the infamous Australian Aboriginal 2002 tour (“Do you still throw spears?”)

As a Republican in The (remote) Commonwealth, I had no time for him or his wife. HOWEVER, I get why disparate folks like Obama, Putin and even Trump laud the guy.

He is funny, honest, open, sensitive (numerous stories: the French golden bicycle jewel....or his interaction with John-John, JFK, Jr....give hints), curious and irascible.

He’s surprisingly compelling.

Someone labelled him a Magnificent Bastard and believe this to be apt.

Although, the whole Royal Family idea is built on mystique and myth; for many Philip and The Queen are representatives of a different era.

A Different Time. And for better/worse things are shifting worldwide.

Although, do feel his grandson, Harry, is representational of all the worst qualities of monarchical privilege. And thus, has sullied redeeming qualities of his grandfather. And grandmother.

I read a comment on another site that said, paraphrasing - "the only death I care about is DMX. Philip was a racist, misogynist, etc." DMX abused women, was a deadbeat dad and fought dogs to their death.

Prince Philip worked up until his nineties. He obviously enjoyed many privileges accorded to his status, but he probably worked harder than any person commenting on this thread. His schedules are available for public viewing. They are jam packed. He said shitty, backwards things occasionally, but by most accounts he treated those he encountered very well and his programs helped a great many people.

I don't know why bashing the royal family has become the virtue signal du jour. The royal family means nothing. They have no real power. They are a red herring.

No doubt the same people making these comments lambasting this dead man think nothing of ordering from Amazon (essentially, slave labor), using electronics made overseas (slave labor, environmental consequences), and wear fast clothing (CHILD LABOR, misuse of resources). Those who call the monarchy an imperialist institution - have you given your land and home back to the Native Americans? Do you raise your own vegetables and livestock so that immigrants no longer have to work in dangerous, underpaid jobs that supply food? Do you ever volunteer your time? Do you routinely give money to your local food pantry? No? Then fuck off. We are all imperialists in someone else's eyes and situation.

What don't you get about a family with centuries of claiming it is God's will that they should rule over others. That the subjugated eventually had no more of it doesn't erase their wealth and land grab. They are literally ENTITLED.

So, no. There should be no tears shed for a man part of a system and family that still impacts today minorities today.

It's funny seeing people getting on their high horse about fighting the Nazi. The ones who fought the Nazi had the same white supremacist ideals as the Nazi. They just didn't get the evil idea of concentration camps first, but they weren't that far behind in terms of genocide and ethic cleansing.

by Anonymousreply 57April 10, 2021 2:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 58April 10, 2021 2:52 PM

Again, did you return your land to the Native Americans? Did you continue to pay your taxes while the genocidal maniac that was Bush II murdered millions in the Middle East? Oh what, THOSE brown people don't matter? YOU are literally ENTILTLED. YOU participate in the subjugation of others every single day.

I notice you had no response for any of the examples I provided, did you? Because you have no defense. You are not morally superior because you criticize the royal family, an impotent figurehead of an institution. This nation was created because wealthy landowners did not want to share the profits of their lands with the king. They, too, thought they had God's sovereign approval of their actions. Including when they imported slaves. So you hate the royal family? SO BRAVE. WOW, let's just applaud how righteous you are.

The Truth About Philip and Fergie’s Bitter Feud

Prince Philip was often said to have vowed never to be in the same room as Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of his son Andrew, after photographs appeared in a newspaper in 1992 of Sarah topless and having her toes sucked by a lover in the South of France.

Prince Philip was often said to have vowed never to be in the same room as Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of his son Andrew, after photographs appeared in a newspaper in 1992 of Sarah topless and having her toes sucked by a lover in the South of France.

Gyles Brandreth, Philip’s official biographer whose book The Final Portrait will be published later this month, has confirmed that long-standing rumor today in the second lengthy excerpt from his book.

Even as a Corpse, Prince Philip Has to Take Second Place to the Queen

Philip, he said, declared “enough was enough” after the pictures appeared. He told Brandreth Fergie was “simply beyond the pale,” and resolved not to have anything more to do with her.

At the time when the pictures were first published, Sarah was staying at the queen’s Scottish country estate of Balmoral. Philip put his resolution into immediate action, as Ferguson herself recalled to Brandreth, saying: “It was ridiculous. As soon as I came in through one door, he’d be falling over the corgis to get out of the other. It was very funny. Except, of course, it wasn’t.”

He described Andrew and Sarah’s post-divorce arrangements which have seen them continue to share a home as “truly bizarre,” adding, “I don’t pretend to understand it.”

Philip’s alleged vow to never be in the same room as Fergie was broken only when they both attended the wedding of Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in May 2018.

I just thought of him as Mr Malaprop.

by Anonymousreply 86April 16, 2021 5:38 AM

He mooched off the British taxpayer most of his life.

His mother and father were very odd. Do The Google on his childhood. He did marry well, the only job to do being a stud to she who would be Queen. After a decade or so he was made a prince of England. He did do his duty well, a true support to The Queen and the country. In private he was a strong head of the family. Truly a credit to his new job, as was May of Teck. He did well. It's just damn foolishness to bash him.

No-one is above criticism, especially one who was constantly through his life verbally offensive to people who couldn't answer back. In any other walk of life such people are seen and named as bullies.

by Anonymousreply 90April 16, 2021 6:17 PM

Lol, r90. Philip was no bully and nor was he offensive. He was just forthright and funny and a little ironic about some of the sycophancy he had to deal with.

Historian A N Wilson in the latest TLS: "..the Queen was leaning over a man injured by an IRA bomb, asking him how much sight he retained. 'Not a lot', said the Duke, 'judging by that tie.'"

Priceless forthright funniness to a man recently bombed and in danger of losing his eyesight. I'm sure everyone roared with laughter at such sharp Royal wit, nurses especially. We've lost a brilliant humanitarian comedian.

Useless eater. A drone. He should have been topped off after Lilibet dropped her last kid.

by Anonymousreply 93April 16, 2021 7:11 PM

That is funny r92 and, considering Philip's own beloved uncle Dickie was murdered by the IRA, Philip could say whatever the fuck he liked in relation to them.

by Anonymousreply 94April 16, 2021 8:28 PM

Not only was Uncle Dickie assassinated, but so were Philip's grandfather, two great-aunts, and six cousins.

He wasn't the brightest bulb in the pack and neither are his children.

by Anonymousreply 98April 17, 2021 11:47 AM

You can't humanize this nasty old man. But keep trying.

by Anonymousreply 99April 17, 2021 11:33 PM

You wish you'll have as many people viewing your funeral and mourning you as he did today r99. Not gonna happen.

by Anonymousreply 100April 18, 2021 12:17 AM

They're there for the food and drinks, r100. He was a nasty, bigoted, entitled old fart.

Folks just want to be seen on television. I bet that they don't give a fuck.
