Funny guy...” Dontopedalogy is the science of opening your mouth and putting your foot in it, a science which I have practiced for a good many years,” he was quoted saying in 1960.
A year later, Philip would tell the Scottish Womens’ Institute that “British women can’t cook.”
He once told a group of deaf children gathered near a Caribbean steel drum band in 2000, “Deaf? If you’re near there, no wonder you are deaf.” And, when a British Sea Cadet told him she worked at a nightclub in 2009, he asked, “Is it a strip club?”
His cringe-inducing comments went on for decades, including on trips overseas, like asking a group of Indigenous Australians “Do you still throw spears at each other?” in 2002 and telling the President of Nigeria, who was dressed in traditional robes, “You look like you’re ready for bed!” in 2003.

[quote] Why then be concerned about the conservation of wildlife when for all practical purposes we would be much better off if humans and their domestic animals and pets were the only living creatures on the face of the earth? There is no obvious and demolishing answer to this rather doubtful logic although in practice the destruction of all wild animals would certainly bring devastating changes to our existence on this planet as we know it today...The trouble is that everything in nature is completely interdependent. Tinker with one part of it and the repercussions ripple out in all directions... Wildlife — and that includes everything from microbes to blue whales and from a fungus to a redwood tree — has been so much part of life on the earth that we are inclined to take its continued existence for granted...Yet the wildlife of the world is disappearing, not because of a malicious and deliberate policy of slaughter and extermination, but simply because of a general and widespread ignorance and neglect.

R65 The Queen. The title Duke of Edinburgh was bestowed on Phil the day he married Lillibet by her father George V. It wasn't a hereditary title. So the Queen gets to decide who gets it. There has been talk for years about Eddie getting the dukedom. But I'm sure HM won't be in any condition to think about piddly stuff like who gets the title for a while.

They mentioned on the news (either CNN or BBC News, I forget which), that a funeral likely wouldn't be for a couple of weeks. That gives Harry time to come back to London and do a quarantine. Meghan will not come, but will blame the pregnancy. Actually, it's not wise for air travel during last quarter of pregnancy, so even if she was on good terms with The Firm, it wouldn't be a good idea.

It’s bringing back memories of my mother forcing me to do the DofE expedition/volunteer schemes, which I did not want to do and had no interest in, as a way to prop up my application to Cambridge University, a school to which I did not want to go. Completing the Gold Award, I almost toppled off a rainy mountainside with full pack on my back, and though I survived had twisted ankles, hives and blisters for months afterward, then massively fell out with a friend with whom I had gone on the expedition.
It’s not easy for soft-footed teenagers, and doing it gave me much greater respect for soldiers and for wilderness rangers/paramedics etc. Dukey was clearly a rugged and spritely fellow who enjoyed stretching his physical limits.
In the end I fell at the last hurdle of Cambridge interviews, too, so it was all for naught.

R127 - His immediate forbears were "elected" to head Greece's monarchy. He was Danish-German-Anglo, and in fact one of Queen Victoria's descendants and the Queen's cousin several times removed.
I always thought it spoke well of the Queen's private side that she was so hot for him she refused to marry anyone else and wore her father down over several years. And, you lot do know right, that she was well rewarded for her steadfastness in the sack? She took to sex like the proverbial duck and Philip ended up complaining that he couldn't keep the young Princess out of his bed, until his father-in-law took him aside and told him to shut it?
The Queen is a countrywoman who bred horses and dogs - and, thus, far earthier than her public role allows.

R101 - Yes, I imagine they're all gleefully recalling how the IRA murdered his uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, who, ironically, was the most outspokenly pro-Irish member of the family, also killing two teenage boys with the bomb.
Because, as we all know, Prince Philip was Ireland's real problem.

R128, I think you must be using the link below for your Cork slang, as Johnny Raw-Jaws doesn't show up elsewhere. Also, "do oneself a mischief" is a British saying, not an Irish one. Lastly, Derry and Belfast may as well be a million miles away for all the political similarities between them and Cork.

This post should have been here rather than on the other incorrectly named thread, so I am reposting it here:
Philip once said that his wife was "a great deal closer to my mother than she was to her own". Elizabeth was alleged to have loved her mother-in-law very much. Pss. Alice had a rough life, a rough marriage, became very deaf early on, and spent much of her "post-royal" life in religious dress helping the poor. She lived quietly with her son and daughter-in-law in a small suite in BP, I believe, or perhaps it was Windsor, where the Queen visited her regularly.
The Queen has an odd capacity for emotional denial, one of her most destructive traits, which I think she inherited from her mother. She may have already insulated herself from the prospect of her husband's death - he has, after all, looked like a walking corpse for several years. Her parent's marriage was very, very close, yet her mother was a widow for longer than she had been a wife, and regained her rather well known gusto for life after her beloved husband's death. But then, the Queen Mother was widowed at 53 or so. HM is 95.
We shall see.
If the Harkles have half a brain between them, they'll be carefully courteous and shut up for a decent interval.

And then there's the small matter of Philip's personal fortune, estimated at £24 million or so.
Usually, the terms of their wills are made public on the web site. Likely he left it all to the Queen, trusting her to carry out bequests to individuals.
How delicious would it be if he left absolutely nothing to Harry but broke it up into trust funds for Anne's, Edward's, and Andrew's kids, and William's children?

R188 - Harry could beg off, citing COVID and his heavily pregnant wife. And, because of COVID, it's going to be a far less grand and private affair than it might have been. Philip (like most of the senior royals) make funeral plans long before time. I would wager the old boy wanted a more private affair, anyway.
It could cut both ways. The less grand affair would make it possible for Harry to attend without all those photographers waiting to see whether the family cold-shoulders him; or it could make it possible for him not to attend at all without seeming to endorse the view that the family don't want him back at all.

by Anonymous | reply 220 | April 9, 2021 1:11 PM |
R213 - Yes. It's common practice.
And the royals take black clothes with them on foreign tours, just in case they have to return quickly in the event of a death in the family.
Elizabeth was in Africa with Philip when her father, George VI, died in 1952. She arrived home appropriately clothed in mourning. You will note the PM made his announcement from Downing Street in appropriate black suit and tie (although his disgraceful hair made a charmingly disheveled contrast, and his tie was askew).
Style of thing.

R228 promotes the official spin, which has been embellished over the years. The House of Saxe-Coberg-Gotha spent decades removing their German taint after WWI, and went to extraordinary lengths to play down/hide Philip's Nazi sisters and in-laws during/after WWII. Keep in mind that Philip was a young 22, 23 year old third- or second-in-command lieutenant during the war. How much fighting he actually did, to say nothing of his feelings about his in-laws, is open to discussion.

Philip's mother hid a family of Jews. The Cohens. 5 people. Considering that the rest of the Greeks were rounding up Jews to turn over to the his mothers sons-in-law, I guess that's something. It earned her a place among the Righteous Gentiles and a grave next to her aunt in the Church of St. Mary Magdalen, Jerusalem.

The protocol used to be that the senior Royal Family all wore black for a year after the death of the monarch or their consort. Victoria took it to extremes because she was a depressive. Ok here come all the deification stories in reading:
Did Meghan and Harry cause stress for Phillip and hastened his death (right, a 99 year old). Why couldn't Phillip be called king? (Poor Phillip couldn't have the title but was basically a king and lived as such in everything but title) Phillip had sharp wit (yeah the non white commonwealthers whom he made racially insensitive comments about would see it differently)
I'm not dancing on his grave. I wouldn't throw a party over his death, may he RIP and condolences to Elizabeth but COME ON, this man was 99 years old and lived a privileged life for 80 years of it.

Many German princes supported the Nazis, thinking they would restore the monarchy. Many became Nazis themselves and joined the military, but Hitler ordered them to be removed after several lost their lives, which unleashed a level of monarchical support amongst the populace.

I will forever think of Matt Smith when I think of Phillip. I was just watching the Crown again, and the first two seasons are my favorite part. Olivia and Tobias are both fantastic actors but they did nothing for me. But I love Helena Bonham Carter's Margaret.
As I watched the dismantling of Meg's relationship with Townsend, I realized that what they proposed to do to her is exactly what they have done to Harry. Remember when they finally gave her the option of marrying, and said she would be stripped of all her titles, and her income, and would have to live outside the UK? That's when she decided that , "for the good of the realm," she would not marry him.
Ironic, that if there is a procession, and I do believe one is planned, Harry will not be in uniform, even though he served active duty. He wasn't a pretend soldier. And Philip loved him. They really got on well.
He won't be standing next to his father and brother. The front row will be Anne, Charles, Andrew, and William, all in uniform, with Edward and Harry in the second row. William will have to be beside his father.
I have to wonder if Charles will even be able to walk any distance. They're transferring Phil's body to St. James from Windsor as we speak. So there will be a procession on the day he goes back to Windsor for the religious ceremony and burial.

R388 Sadly, we have lots of armchair experts who think because they watched one news segment or an episode of the Crown they know All There Is To Know about Philip, his family and his sympathies.
Just as we have no end of posters who have seen MM on TV or read a few articles but with that brief exposure can look into her very soul and know what a goddess/gold digger she was/is/will forever be.

This is interesting, from the College of Arms:
[quote] The Duke of Edinburgh was granted the style and title of Royal Highness on 19 November 1947; on the next day, 20 November, he was created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, of Greenwich in the County of London. These peerages are hereditary and on the death of His Royal Highness have passed to his eldest son, HRH The Prince of Wales. In the event of the Prince of Wales or any subsequent holder of these titles succeeding to the Crown, these titles and all others held will merge with the Crown.
So as of now, HRH Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, Baron Greenwich of Greenwich, Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Feckin' 'ell.
Presumably, since it was made known when Edward was created Earl of Wessex that he would succeed to his father's titles, there will be a Royal Warrant issued after some decent period of mourning, to transfer them to Edward.

Phil's greatest hits:
"British women can't cook," he told the Scottish Womens' Institute in 1961.
"It looks like the kind of thing my daughter would bring back from her school art lessons," he muttered while being shown Ethiopian art in 1965.
"I would like to go to Russia very much, although the bastards murdered half my family," at a very heated period of history in 1967.
"What do you gargle with? Pebbles?" he told singer Tom Jones at the 1969 Royal Variety Performance. Later he added: "It's difficult to see how it’s possible to become immensely valuable by singing what are the most hideous songs."
”We don’t come here for our health. We can think of other ways of enjoying ourselves," he told journalists in Canada in 1976.
"You are a woman, aren't you?" he said to a Kenyan woman, who was presenting him with a small gift in 1984.
"If you stay here much longer you will all be slitty-eyed," the Prince told British exchange students who lived in Xian in 1986. When asked on his opinion of Beijing, he replied: "Ghastly."
"If it has four legs and it is not a chair, if it has two wings and flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it." Again with the Chinese insults, when he addressed a World Wildlife Fund meeting in 1986.
"I don't think a prostitute is more moral than a wife, but they are doing the same thing," when dismissing claims those who slaughter for meat have greater moral authority than those who partake in blood sports in 1988.
"Oh no, I might catch some ghastly disease," when asked if he wanted to pet a koala in Australia back in 1992.
"You can't have been here that long — you haven't got a pot belly," he told a British tourist during a visit to Budapest in 1993.
"Aren't most of you descended from pirates?," he enquired to an islander while in the Cayman Islands in 1994

Funeral Arrangements
"The funeral will not be a State Funeral and will not be preceded by a Lying-in-State. His Royal Highness’s body will lie at rest in Windsor Castle ahead of the funeral in St George’s Chapel. This is in line with custom and with His Royal Highness’s wishes.
"The funeral arrangements have been revised in view of the prevailing circumstances arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and it is regretfully requested that members of the public do not attempt to attend or participate in any of the events that make up the funeral."

by Anonymous | reply 457 | April 9, 2021 3:38 PM |
We went though this in a number of other royalty threads or DL.
Prince Edward will not "inherit" the dukedom of Edinburgh, that would imply things are automatic which they decidedly are not.
Prince Phillip's dukedom along with rest of his titles were granted by letters patent with remainder to male heirs of his body in order of primogeniture. That would mean Prince Charles gets the lot, but he cannot "give" the dukedom of E to his brother until becoming monarch when all his titles merge back with crown and are thus free to be given out again. Prince William will get Prince Of Wales and that lot, with Prince Edward D of E...
There is nothing stopping HM from speeding up that agreement and taking the d of E away from PC and giving it to PE now, indeed since it is the Queen who is so insistent on her youngest son becoming a duke HM may decide to do so now while she lives than it happening later after her death.

I think this is probably what will happen, later this year after she comes out of mourning. The other way it could happen is if Charles disclaimed the titles for himself and his heirs, but that would also require Prince Andrew to do the same. Alice, Prince Philip's mother, was a Battenberg. Her mother was Victoria of Milford Haven, sister of Empress Alexandra of Russia and Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Russia. Elizabeth was very religious and founded a convent in Moscow. She and her nun-companion, Barbara, was thrown alive down a a mine in Siberia along with a bunch of Romanovs. Elizabeth's body was recovered and ended up in a Jerusalem Church she and his husband had built there. Alice was with her mother in Russia staying at the Alexander Palace with her mother and aunt and the outbreak of war. Alice was laid alongside Elizabeth in Jerusalem and Philip and Prince Charles visited her body there. Alexandra, Victoria, Elizabeth, Irene and Ernst Ludwig were all daughters of Princess Alice. Darmstadt was in Germany, but they were opposed to Prussia and forced into the unification of Germany. They always considered themselves Hessians. Charles and Philip both venerate Grand Duchess Elizabeth a a saint.

You're correct, only way to speed up Earl of Wessex being granted d of E would be for HM to act before her death. Prince of Wales can agree to relinquish (or not put up a stink) all he likes, but if remainder is to males in order of birth then Prince Andrew comes next. Personally, I would have preferred if Philip had not taken his mother's nom de la convenance politique and applied his paternal house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderberg-Glücksburg as his surname. No "Mountbatten" or the abominable "Windsor."
That way his and Elizabeth's children could have been known, in a nicely joint way, As Chuck, AnnE, Andy and Teddy Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderberg-Glücksburg-Saxe-Coburg-and-Gotha.
Meghan would have taken several years to learn it and find ways to fit it onto her "cards" and stationery and bath towels, sparing poor Philip the infuriation of her and her pet hubbin Prince Dimbulb's the repeated outrages that eventually killed him.
I would like to know the last thing he called his grandson's wife. I doubt it was "Meg Windsor."

Regardless of how one feels about monarchies (and the British royals particularly), I was saddened to learn of Prince Philip's death today. He and HRH were a constant presence throughout my life beginning in the 1950s, and for that alone I shall mourn and miss him.
Rest in Peace, Prince Philip.

Some years back now I was told that he had had a long running affair with a gamekeeper. The person who told me, a regular at the local pub, claimed to be a mate of the gamekeeper ( he was straight ). Philip was known in the 50s/60s to arrange meets with actresses. They would get a fur coat after. The gamekeeper affair happened once he had stopped dalliances with actresses as word was getting out. It was, eventually, brought to an end for much the same reason. This was still back when the press did not leak stories but were beginning to change.
The odd thing was the bloke who told me was always very straightforward, never seemed to be a bullshitter, told me the name of the estate and so on ( I’ve since forgotten ) and was very matter of fact about it. Make of it what you will.

R512, Prince Edward is not a county in New York State.
And his being given the dukedom of Edinburgh was the way to secure it as part of the royal family in Philip's honor, and to reward Edward (finally) for managing to "sire" a son. And daughter, too.
The title was worth waiting for, especially since the best ones (Gloucester, Kent, York, etc.) are taken, tainted by deprivation after WWI, or otherwise mouldily meaningless. The first Duke of Edinburgh, after all, was a Prince of Wales.

"I never understood why Edward wasn't given a dukedom in the first place."
We went through that in another BRF thread.
Prince Edward wanted a dukedom that couldn't be granted, so he went for an earldom of Wessex because it came from one of the prince's favourite films; Shakespeare in Love.
HM still wanted her youngest to have a dukedom so the carefully arranged "agreement" was hatched out that gives PE his father's d of E via Prince (then king) Charles.

I knew Philip wasn't long for this world after that month-long stay in the hospital. They sent him home to Windsor to die. Another big clue was that his last two great-grandsons both have Philip as part of their names: The family had been told he was going. It also explains Charles' teary expression when he visited his father in the hospital.
Centenarian males are quite rare, though those who do make it to 100 have a better chance of becoming supercentenarians (110+) than centenarian women because they carry exceptional genes. Philip making it to 100 or later would have been quite a feat, but it sounded like he was dreading the fuss over his birthday, and now he gets to have the quiet funeral he wanted thanks to COVID. He really couldn't have gone at a more perfect time.

Meghan won't come: She doesn't want to, and she has the perfect excuse. Harry will come and stay the minimal possible time. Lucky for all of them, COVID means a very private funeral where there will be minimal media coverage. Harry can look as glum as he likes and blame it on mourning, not on being forced to come back to the country and family he now loathes. The only tricky thing will be the obvious cold body language you'll see between him and the rest of the Royals.
COVID also allowed the Royals to have a quiet wedding for Beatrice with no awkwardness over Andrew or the participation of the Sussexes. The quarantine has worked out well for them from a PR standpoint.

I didn't say they were unknown, R531, but they are rare, much rarer than female centenarians. My own grandfather died at 99, and he came from a long line of men who made it into their 90s. They never quite make it over the last hurdle, though. Grandpa's health declined a lot like Prince Philip's: Years of rude good health lasting into his mid-90s, followed by increasing health problems and sudden death after a long stay in the hospital. It's like the body just finally says 'enough.'

I don't believe TQ can speed up that process. Charles is now DofE, that is his until TQ dies and those titles then merge 'back with the crown', to be re-created by King Charles for someone else (Edward, most likely). That's the plan.

I really doubt there is any possibility of Meghan attending. It's Harry whose presence is questionable.
In my opinion, Harry has already nailed his flag to the Non-Windsor mast, and would best serve both his own and the sensibilities of his mourning grandmother by staying home in California and sending flowers. This time, I'm sure they'll display them.
"Thank you for your service"?!
That's something people say to strangers on Remembrance Day wearing their old uniforms.
They never fail to miss their target. Of course, in this instance, they may have hit exactly the target they wished: "We're not part of you any longer, and we know we have to say something, so here it is."

A relevant story, which unites both the aristocracy and the Nazi obsession of some earlier posters: when Hitler asked Unity Mitford what her father's name was, she said "David Redesdale", to which Hitler (believing Unity to be illegitimate because of the different surnames) responded, "armes Kind!", meaning "poor child".

Philip should have been a DLer.
Prince Philip, who died on April 9, aged 99, was renowned for speaking his mind. Here, we celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh’s best jokes - and greatest gaffes - from over the years.
"British women can't cook" (in Britain in 1966). "What do you gargle with? Pebbles?" (speaking to singer Tom Jones after the 1969 Royal Variety Performance). "I declare this thing open, whatever it is." (on a visit to Canada in 1969). "Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed" (during the 1981 recession). "If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it." (at a 1986 World Wildlife Fund meeting). "It looks like a tart's bedroom." (on seeing plans for the Duke and Duchess of York's house at Sunninghill Park in 1988). "Yak, yak, yak; come on get a move on." (shouted from the deck of Britannia in Belize in 1994 to the Queen who was chatting to her hosts on the quayside). "We didn't have counsellors rushing around every time somebody let off a gun, asking 'Are you all right? Are you sure you don't have a ghastly problem?' You just got on with it." (about the Second World War commenting on modern stress counselling for servicemen in 1995). "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?" (to a driving instructor in Oban, Scotland, during a 1995 walkabout). "If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?" (in 1996, amid calls to ban firearms after the Dunblane shooting). "Bloody silly fool!" (in 1997, referring to a Cambridge University car park attendant who did not recognise him). "It looks as if it was put in by an Indian." (pointing at an old-fashioned fusebox in a factory near Edinburgh in 1999). 1/2
by Anonymous | reply 600 | April 9, 2021 5:56 PM |
"Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf." (to young deaf people in Cardiff, in 1999, referring to a school's steel band). "They must be out of their minds." (in the Solomon Islands, in 1982, when he was told that the annual population growth was 5 per cent). "You are a woman, aren't you?"(In Kenya, in 1984, after accepting a small gift from a local woman).
by Anonymous | reply 601 | April 9, 2021 5:56 PM |
"If you stay here much longer, you'll all be slitty-eyed." (perhaps his most notorious comment - to British students in China, during a 1986 state visit). "Your country is one of the most notorious centres of trading in endangered species in the world." (in Thailand, in 1991, after accepting a conservation award). "Oh no, I might catch some ghastly disease." (in Australia, in 1992, when asked to stroke a Koala bear). "You can't have been here that long - you haven't got a pot belly." (to a Briton in Budapest, Hungary, in 1993). "Aren't most of you descended from pirates?" (to a wealthy islander in the Cayman Islands in 1994). "You managed not to get eaten, then?" (suggesting to a student in 1998 who had been trekking in Papua New Guinea that tribes there were still cannibals). In Germany, in 1997, he welcomed German Chancellor Helmut Kohl at a trade fair as "Reichskanzler" - the last German leader who used the title was Adolf Hitler. "You're too fat to be an astronaut." (to 13-year-old Andrew Adams who told Philip he wanted to go into space. Salford, 2001). "I wish he'd turn the microphone off." (muttered at the Royal Variety Performance as he watched Sir Elton John perform, 2001). "Do you still throw spears at each other?" (In Australia in 2002 talking to a successful aborigine entrepreneur). "You look like a suicide bomber." (to a young female officer wearing a bullet-proof vest on Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, in 2002). "Do you know they're now producing eating dogs for anorexics?" (to a blind woman outside Exeter Cathedral, 2002). "Well, you didn't design your beard too well, did you?" (to designer Stephen Judge about his tiny goatee beard in July 2009). "There's a lot of your family in tonight." (after looking at the name badge of businessman Atul Patel at a Palace reception for British Indians in October 2009). "Do you work in a strip club?" (to 24-year-old Barnstaple Sea Cadet Elizabeth Rendle when she told him she also worked in a nightclub in March 2010). "Do you have a pair of knickers made out of this?" (pointing to some tartan to Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie a papal reception in Edinburgh in September 2010). "Bits are beginning to drop off." (on approaching his 90th birthday, 2011).
