Rege Jean Page new favourite to play the next James Bond

“ There's a new favourite tipped to be the next James Bond, and he's not who fans might expect.

Speculation is growing that Regé-Jean Page will next play 007. Page played the dashing Duke of Hastings in the hit Netflix show Bridgerton. It follows news the fan favourite will not return for the second season of Bridgerton.

And according to bookies company Coral, he's now the clear favourite to play the spy in the iconic franchise after Daniel Craig retires from the role.”

More in the link.

Franchise killer tbh.

He is too young.

by Anonymousreply 1April 7, 2021 7:46 PM

I don't think he's too young - isn't he in his late 20s or early 30s?

That said, he doesn't seem right to me. Not butch enough (sorry!)

by Anonymousreply 2April 7, 2021 7:48 PM

I think he needs to come down to earth because it seems he is believing his own hype.

I remember the backlash with Daniel Craig, but Rege basically has a female following.

I don't know, i think the people behind James Bond franchise want to be socially relevant but the fanchise never was progressive. Their main fans are males, and every minor change finds opposition.

by Anonymousreply 3April 7, 2021 7:49 PM

Happy for him to be a Bond boy. A bisexual James Bond would be a lot of fun.

by Anonymousreply 4April 7, 2021 7:49 PM

he could definitely fucking do it.

I don't watch that Bridgerton show but I saw him on SNL and boy is he charming. Very handsome, decent body though I'd like to see him gain another 15 lbs of muscle, he has comedic timing which is needed for Bond and he can sing which would be a nice surprise element.

The ladies would love to see a Bond guy serenading a woman before seducing her

by Anonymousreply 5April 7, 2021 7:52 PM

Get woke, go broke.

by Anonymousreply 6April 7, 2021 7:53 PM

R6 - Screw you! You old Klan Granny

Rege Jean Page has my vote to be the next bond.

by Anonymousreply 7April 7, 2021 7:55 PM

Is he on Kate winslet’s list of gay/bi actors...

by Anonymousreply 8April 7, 2021 7:58 PM

R7 It's not a question of being racist. The truth is these kind of changes never work.

If they want a black James Bond they should introduce him on a James Bond movie and see how it works.

There will be racist backlash if they go with a black James Bond, but most people will have a bad reaction just because they don't like major changes in the things they like.

Anyway a black James Bond doesn't make any sense, it's a british character if they want to give the role to a minority it should be a southasian guy

by Anonymousreply 9April 7, 2021 8:06 PM

He is handsome but his chin and jaw aren't strong enough for Bond.

I did not see him on SNL so cannot say if his charm overcomes these fatal flaws.

by Anonymousreply 10April 7, 2021 8:06 PM

He’s a good looking guy but he’s only hot at the Duke.

Ho-hum.

More hand-me-down white roles for black actors.

Instead of the usual sloppy seconds, how about creating a new spy franchise?

[quote]There will be racist backlash if they go with a black James Bond, but most people will have a bad reaction just because they don't like major changes in the things they like.

It’s the same story with Krypton.

[quote]Geoff Johns allegedly objected to Regé-Jean Page portraying Superman's grandfather on Krypton because Superman couldn't have a Black grandfather.

TV show aside, for the record, one black grandparent out of four does not = a black grandchild.

He's a bit older than most of his press says, he was born in May 1988.

That makes him a year older than Sean Connery when Dr No was filmed.

His full name at birth was Regererai Gamuchirai Jean Matongo, the 'Page' seems to have been added later.

It'll never happen, the main Bond fan base are mainstream white straight guys who won't be very interested in a black Bond. Not that they're racist, or not blatantly, it's just that they like heroes they can identify with and they're totally used to having white guys they can identify with as the heroes of action movies.

And of course, the massive Chinese market would rather watch a white guy and than a black one, so I don't think Page has a hope. But I still wonder if Henry Goulding has a chance, he's half white and really hot after all.

by Anonymousreply 15April 7, 2021 8:51 PM

[quote] The ladies would love to see a Bond guy serenading a woman before seducing her

Yeah no.

by Anonymousreply 16April 7, 2021 8:56 PM

The Broccolis have already said they are not interested in a Black Bond so it's just fancasting whenever these things comes up.

[quote]TV show aside, for the record, one black grandparent out of four does not = a black grandchild.

Also, just like in the comics, MAN OF STEEL made it clear that Kryptonians are genetically engineered so it's a moot point.

Brit actor Stephen Graham's grandfather is black. Graham would not be classed as Black.

A black or non-white Bond would spell the end of the entire franchise. Not just for the future movies but for the full back catalogue. I hope Barbara Broccoli realizes this.

by Anonymousreply 18April 7, 2021 8:58 PM

I read that he was up for Black Panther.

by Anonymousreply 19April 7, 2021 9:40 PM

Probably wrong photo to introduce as the next possible Bond...too much smile. Handsome guy though.

by Anonymousreply 20April 7, 2021 9:47 PM

🤔

by Anonymousreply 22April 7, 2021 9:58 PM

R22 It's obvious that part of the backlash if he gets the role it will be linked to racism but it will be far from being the main reason.

And by now Hollywood should know that people don't react well to this kind of cosmetical changes.

If they want black leads it'll work way better with original characters (or character that were originally black), and there's a lot of material to choose

by Anonymousreply 23April 8, 2021 3:01 PM

They’re still making these stupid films?

by Anonymousreply 24April 8, 2021 3:18 PM

R23 is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 25April 8, 2021 3:19 PM

[quote] A black or non-white Bond would spell the end of the entire franchise. Not just for the future movies but for the full back catalogue.

No, grandpa.

by Anonymousreply 26April 8, 2021 3:19 PM

If he's cast I would watch it for the mindless fun. Does anyone really care deeply enough about the universe created in Daniel Craig's James Bond movies? I mean in this version SPECTRE was apparently specifically created by a former acquaintance of Bond who was jealous that his dad liked Bond more than his own son, and for that he took revenge on Bond (starting with the elaborate way Vesper Lynd was killed in Casino Royale). Even the Pierce Brosnan ones were more fun.

by Anonymousreply 27April 8, 2021 3:33 PM

R25 I think you are the idiot

by Anonymousreply 28April 8, 2021 6:19 PM

He refused to be in the second season of the show that made him famous.

He has an explanation for that, but given he only had to do some guest star (well payed) appearances it makes him look ungrateful

by Anonymousreply 29April 8, 2021 6:36 PM

R23, you racists said the same thing about Bridgerton, which was a hit

The movies have already taken MANY licenses with the books, so why are some people pretending change is bad?

by Anonymousreply 30April 8, 2021 6:39 PM

R17, no, no one said they aren't interested in a black Bond. All they said is that James Bond wouldn't be a female

by Anonymousreply 31April 8, 2021 6:40 PM

Yeah no, not while Barbara Broccoli draws a breath, no no.

Rege seems to have terrible management so if this is some kind of self-planted item, that is def not how the Broccolis play and MGM still needs to get the latest one out and somehow paid for. If they have to sell it off or move it away from MGM, the whole equation changes.

Now is not at all the time for this Rege. It's a very mediocre attempt to provide a narrative behind why he's not coming back to Bridgerton. 3 stars.

by Anonymousreply 32April 8, 2021 6:42 PM

Racists like r6 who say shit like "Go Woke, Go Broke" (Ted Cruz says that all the time by the way) are the same morons who complain about cancel culture while boycotting Pepsi, Nike, NFL, MLB....

by Anonymousreply 33April 8, 2021 6:44 PM

Didn't they just try this with that movie... what's it called? Black UK spy guy.

by Anonymousreply 34April 8, 2021 6:45 PM

R30 Are you really that dense to compare Bridgerton to the James Bond franchise?

Only the women who read the novels knew a thing about Bridgerton, and Rene was like a wet dream to them.

At least you are too young or too dumb you should remember how Daniel Craig was treated. A blond James Bond? atrocious.

A black James Bond just don't make any sense, it's infusing american politics on a very british character.

by Anonymousreply 35April 8, 2021 6:47 PM

R33 For brands is a good idea, for films not that much. A wrinkle in time or Annie were examples of putting a black character instead of the white original and both flopped hard.

This is not about black (or other minorities) as lead characters, it's about changing well know characters for the sake of it. Generally people don't buy that trick (specially because scream lazy writting)

by Anonymousreply 36April 8, 2021 6:48 PM

Stop appropriating white culture, black people. Make your own.

by Anonymousreply 37April 8, 2021 7:13 PM

Yum.

by Anonymousreply 38April 8, 2021 7:14 PM

Stunt casting.

by Anonymousreply 39April 8, 2021 7:24 PM

Being the "new favourite" to play the next James Bond means nothing. Remember when Tom Hiddleston was the new favourite for like 5 seconds until Hiddleswift happend and the Bond producer bashed him for not being masculine enough to play Bond?

by Anonymousreply 40April 8, 2021 8:10 PM

R36, the same people who bitch about "woke" shit were rooting for Crazy Rich Asians to fail, because they think acknowledging that minorities exist is "woke" - ooops, it turned out to be a big hit

R36, people change well-known characters all the time. I guess it's only a problem for Republicans if they make a character into a minority

Annie and A Wrinkle in Time would have flopped no matter who was cast. Kids don't care about Annie

by Anonymousreply 41April 8, 2021 8:14 PM

He isn't very attractive or masculine.

by Anonymousreply 42April 8, 2021 8:16 PM

^^ You nailed it.

by Anonymousreply 43April 8, 2021 8:33 PM

How often have they remade the original Ian Fleming books? It would be interesting if they would do those again. How often do they make a new version of Pride and Prejudice, about every 6 months?

by Anonymousreply 44April 8, 2021 8:34 PM

I like him. I think he has charisma. Looked good in the period costumes on Bridgerton and would look good in the Bond suits. Besides, they had previously discussed Idris Elba, hadn't they? So this isn't a big stretch.

by Anonymousreply 45April 8, 2021 8:43 PM

But Idris Elba is sexy and masculine.

by Anonymousreply 46April 8, 2021 8:44 PM

[quote]people change well-known characters all the time. I guess it's only a problem for Republicans if they make a character into a minority

Another recent success, changing John Watson (of Sherlock Holmes) into a black gay man in The Irregulars ... which was already renewed for Season 2 shortly after it premiered.

Billy Dee Williams played Two Face/Harvey Dent in Batman.

Will Smith and Pam Grier both played characters who were originally white in I Am Legend and Jackie Brown. He also did that in Wild Wild West.

I guess you could add Jason Maoma as Aquaman.

[quote]Annie and A Wrinkle in Time would have flopped no matter who was cast. Kids don't care about Annie

Seriously, kids are much more interested in adult-ish humor and animation than they ever were. Those films were always going to bomb. (Add any Peter Pan remake into this too. Stories from another time.)

by Anonymousreply 47April 8, 2021 8:45 PM

R41 Probably, but that doesn't change the fact that they flopped.

Crazy, rich asians is not exactly an accurate comparission, that's a faithful adaptation of an asian novel written by an asian writter.

There's no cosmetic changings in crazy rich asians, it's a shallow and very funny bestseller with a shallow and very funny film, people liked the novel and liked the film.

James Bond is a very established character, and frankly there's absolutely no reason for him to be black (the same way there's no reason to make the character a woman). Blacks are not even the main minority in UK.

And James Bond fans are rabid fanatics like the the Damiel Craig nonsense proved

by Anonymousreply 48April 8, 2021 8:45 PM

Looks more like a hot young bartender in a mid-size city than an international British spy.

by Anonymousreply 49April 8, 2021 8:47 PM

R46 I don't disagree, but he's 48 now. I imagine they want to infuse some youth into the franchise and Bridgerton has been the most successful show in the history of Netflix (82 mil streams), and that has a lot to do with him. Executives look at numbers.

by Anonymousreply 50April 8, 2021 8:49 PM

[quote] A black James Bond just don't make any sense, it's infusing american politics on a very british character.

You live through tv and movies because you have no life.

by Anonymousreply 51April 8, 2021 8:51 PM

We already know that the next Bond is black. This was already stated for the past two years. It’s a done deal. This outrage is as stupid as the female Doctor Who.

by Anonymousreply 52April 8, 2021 8:52 PM

It’s ridiculous to try to make a character who has always been white be black suddenly just to jump onto the woke bandwagon. Stupid.

by Anonymousreply 53April 8, 2021 8:53 PM

Noooo. And its not because he's black. I'm black and I would have love to see Idris a decade ago.

But he's too soft. Bond, even at his most elegant and gentle a la Pierce, always had a certain masculinity. Not that this guys isn't masculine, and he's very good looking but he doesn't have the grit. This will be a disaster especially after the Bond persona cemented by Craig.

by Anonymousreply 54April 8, 2021 8:54 PM

[quote] This is not about black (or other minorities) as lead characters, it's about changing well know characters for the sake of it. Generally people don't buy that trick (specially because scream lazy writting)

How does skin color change anything? He’s a man with a dick. Having a tan doesn’t change shit.

by Anonymousreply 55April 8, 2021 8:54 PM

[quote] This is not about black (or other minorities) as lead characters, it's about changing well know characters for the sake of it. Generally people don't buy that trick (specially because scream lazy writting)

Oh, dear, the irony.

by Anonymousreply 56April 8, 2021 8:55 PM

They were outrage when Judi Dench was cast in the male part.

by Anonymousreply 57April 8, 2021 8:56 PM

R9, yousa a dumb ass bitch. There's black people born and raised in London as well as the countryside.

by Anonymousreply 58April 8, 2021 8:56 PM

He's a good actor and he is the right age and really hot, but I agree he is too soft. I'd need to see him in some action films first.

by Anonymousreply 59April 8, 2021 8:57 PM

R53, it's always fun to watch the outrage from freeper-land, people who think it's a crime against nature for a made-up character to be black.

by Anonymousreply 60April 8, 2021 8:59 PM

Richard Madden should be the next Bond.

by Anonymousreply 61April 8, 2021 9:04 PM

Rene is cute but won’t age well.

by Anonymousreply 62April 8, 2021 9:04 PM

R60 agreed, it's really funny to watch them have nervous breakdowns about some pop culture bullshit. Every time!

by Anonymousreply 63April 8, 2021 9:04 PM

He's so hot! I have such a crush on him. I really hope he's going to be the next Bond. :)

by Anonymousreply 64April 8, 2021 9:07 PM

Does he have a smegma problem?

by Anonymousreply 65April 8, 2021 9:08 PM

Well James Bond doesn’t even grow old for chrissske it’s not like there’s much logic to the series anyway. Who cares what color he is anymore, it’s fiction after all.

Let’s face it a James Bond born today would probably have more ethnic diversity than in the 60s even, let’s not forget he’s half Swiss and there’s french and Italian influences that could account for a swarthy complexion.

I’m all for seeing a different looking James Bond to breathe more life into the franchise. I like what Daniel Craig did he was an interesting choice because he was not good looking like pierce and the ones before him but he was a better actor.

I just can’t vouch for regie’s acting because I haven’t seen bridgerton...

He's nice to dogs.

by Anonymousreply 72April 8, 2021 9:23 PM

I find it hilarious that people's lives will be ruined (RUINED!) by a black James Bond. It's like people use any excuse to pick a fight. Like, that's what fandom is about, going to war over someone's skin color.

by Anonymousreply 73April 8, 2021 10:05 PM

This reminds me when Fox News literally said how could America survive having Superman renounce his American citizenship in the comic book. Some people just live through propaganda. Your life will continue despite what happens in tv and film.

by Anonymousreply 74April 8, 2021 10:14 PM

Next step: Holy Crusades towards Comic Con.

"Stan Lee will sort them out!"

by Anonymousreply 75April 8, 2021 10:29 PM

Good lord is Bond still a thing? I thought daniel Craig killed him off good. Let it go.

by Anonymousreply 76April 8, 2021 11:00 PM

Idris Elba is so much more masculine, and would make a better Bond. Rege is so thin and short. He is charismatic as hell, and I suppose that he could bulk up.

by Anonymousreply 77April 8, 2021 11:05 PM

We don't need a James Bond with a cutie-pie face.

by Anonymousreply 78April 8, 2021 11:08 PM

He’s clearly a very handsome man, but not butch enough for Bond. Obviously, I was never a Roger Moore fan.

by Anonymousreply 79April 8, 2021 11:11 PM

He's quite butch, just too high brow.

[quote]Good lord is Bond still a thing?

Shhhh, you're going to upset the boomers that try to insist Bond is all the rage with the kids these days in every Bond thread.

by Anonymousreply 80April 9, 2021 12:57 AM

Are the one who insists those movies are making billions of dollars due to old people alone?

by Anonymousreply 81April 9, 2021 1:07 AM

^ Are YOU the one...

by Anonymousreply 82April 9, 2021 1:07 AM

He’s sweetly baby-faced. Hard to see him as Bond. But that’s why they call it acting I guess.

by Anonymousreply 83April 9, 2021 1:27 AM

I like both Idris and Rege and I think both would make an ideal Bond. I just worry Idris is too old now.

by Anonymousreply 84April 9, 2021 1:30 AM

[quote] Obviously, I was never a Roger Moore fan.

Roger Moore is hardly the epitome of masculinity, but I much prefer his campness to the far-too-serious Daniel Craig.

by Anonymousreply 85April 9, 2021 6:21 AM

I don't mind either Idris or Rege.

Craig is so dull now.

by Anonymousreply 86April 9, 2021 6:23 AM

He has a tiny head.

by Anonymousreply 87April 9, 2021 8:01 AM

The Double-0 is the license to kill. In "Thunderball," we briefly met 006.

So why can't Page be 008 instead of an "evolved" ("woke") 007?

by Anonymousreply 88April 9, 2021 8:08 AM

His name is entirely French. René, Jean, and Page. But he's not French at all. How strange.

by Anonymousreply 89April 9, 2021 8:19 AM

R88 That will be a logic step, and you can even test fan reaction to the character before releasing a film with him as a lead.

Anyway, the next Bond will face harsh criticism no matter what. So they better pay him big money because frankly, being James Bond doesn't make you a star outside the fanchise and the movies are pure pop corn

by Anonymousreply 90April 9, 2021 11:19 AM

Harry Styles would make a much better Bond and he looks the part facially.

by Anonymousreply 91April 9, 2021 2:11 PM

Rege is 5ft 11, an inch taller than Daniel Craig.

by Anonymousreply 93April 9, 2021 2:15 PM

I was hoping for Theo James. Oh well. This whole franchise is burnt out anyway. Maybe they should just, you know, create new characters and stuff.

by Anonymousreply 94April 9, 2021 2:41 PM

The ship has sailed for Idris Elba. He's too old now.

by Anonymousreply 95April 9, 2021 4:54 PM

[quote] That said, he doesn't seem right to me. Not butch enough (sorry!)

Pierce Brosnan and (especially) Roger Moore were hardly butch. They were much less masculine than this guy.

by Anonymousreply 96April 9, 2021 5:21 PM

I actually think this would be a great choice. He can do posh, he's stunningly handsome, looks very fit and athletic, and has a great screen presence.

You actually can pull of a black James Bond: he still needs a background where he's wealthy and went to all the right fancy schools, but that's easily possible at this point. As handsome and as charismatic as Idris Elba is, he never seemed right; I've never seen him do posh (though I might have missed something where he did it, it's not for what his persona is known).

Page is not as butch as Connery and Craig have been; but he's also more butch than Moore (who was downright foppish). He seems to be at about the intermediate range, like Lazenby and Dalton and Brosnan.

by Anonymousreply 97April 9, 2021 5:27 PM

I'm all in for a black James Bond (or other person of color), but to be honest I don't get what all the fuss is about over this guy.

by Anonymousreply 98April 9, 2021 5:38 PM

Small head, long neck, r87. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

by Anonymousreply 99April 9, 2021 5:40 PM

R92, I once saw Craig from about 15' away (exiting the "Kelly and Whoever" show). He's 5'8" on a good day.
